I’m interested in them mostly because my NES, SNES, Genesis and OG GameBoy all still work, and it would be nice to be able to still use my cartridges once they finally bite the dust. I got real lucky with the NES getting refurbished by Nintendo of America in the early 2000’s before they released the Wii and were still servicing all their old consoles.
So yeah, I’m curious about how functional they are, for sure.
You can also dump the carts to a micro SD card (as well as add your own ROMS if you want). I will say though, the games you dump are locked to the console. So it’s more for convenience of not having to load them again.
Anyway, I really like it and dumped all of my physical games to it.
Micro transactions, seasons passes, small dlc that are often poor money for value, in some cases in the past as well we’ve seen endings sealed behind dlc or things that clearly should have been part of the game but cut out just to make people buy them as dlc.
My most recent purchase of an expansion that really sticks out is probably Xenoblade 3 where you get a whole new story arc and it’s pretty big in terms of expansions.
Why does it stick out? Because it’s very well done and extremely good value for money.
I got a Serta Lautner executive chair as a gift, normally runs about $300 off sale. It has adjustable air-bladder lumbar support and is so soft I’ve taken naps in it.
I recently accidentally sheared a bolt holding one of the arms on because I failed to check it every 6 months, I called the support group and the lady on the other end was kind enough to waive the cost of the replacement kit and shipping. Cannot recommend enough.
Look into an office supply / overstock / reseller store around you. When businesses close up shop, they usually sell their desks, chairs, etc. to some kind of overstock store. You can usually go there and get very nice chairs for less then 1/4 of the normal cost
Do they sell a good product at a fair price? Do I know what's in it and get what I'm paying for? Is it future-proofed such that what I bought won't disappear if the seller turns off their servers? Does it refrain from using shady tactics to manipulate me into buying something I don't want?
If the answers to all of those questions are "yes", then it doesn't bother me. For instance, Paradox games. Lots of people seem to feel like they need all of the content for a given game, but I don't understand it. They released what they had for a full game at launch, and then while a large portion of that team can move on to prototyping their next game, a smaller team remains behind to come up with some goodies that you can modify that base game with to keep it fresh, if you're interested. It's low cost for them to improve the game at a systemic level, and if what they put out isn't good enough, you can just not buy it and still play the game you already enjoyed. It isn't any less complete just because they decided to attach more game to it, and this is far better for both parties than selling a sequel every year that's the same as last year's but with a tiny bit extra.
When it comes to cosmetics like Mortal Kombat's, it doesn't bother me that they exist. They're horrendously overpriced, so I never even consider buying them, because they're terrible value. There's also the shop timers that would fall under "shady tactics to [attempt to] manipulate me", so that's not cool. Far worse though is how much of that game is arbitrarily tied to server checks, including a couple of unlocks in the base game. Also not cool is that they replaced Krypt with Invasions. The Krypt was a metroidvania-esque dungeon crawl, and while it too was designed to get you to grind a bunch or spend a bunch of extra money, it was actually fun to solve. Invasions is just bot matches but worse, and it's tied behind server checks, because people like me used Cheat Engine to bypass the Krypt grind in MKX rather than spend $20 on Kombat Koins. I really enjoy MK, but they're stepping right up to, and sometimes dancing over, the line.
I can’t figure out why office chairs run so much more than easy chairs and are so much less-durable.
I got an easy chair quite some years back. I don’t think it even ran $300. At some point, I finally managed to muck up the recliner mechanism, but I’ve probably gone through five office chairs since I got that, some of which cost considerably more than that. The back wouldn’t stay up, or the the pneumatic cylinder would fail, or the mesh would weaken and the front of the chair would press up into legs. The office chairs generally didn’t have a headrest.
Honestly, given that I don’t actually work with paper at my desk, I’d kind of rather have an easy chair with some sort of mounting pole for the monitor and a keyboard/mouse tray.
I got a HON Ignition 2.0 a few years back for about $300. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s not a gaming chair. It’s one of the best cheap ergonomic chairs I’ve ever used. You can get them lightly used from Amazon for about $360 nowadays, or $425 new. Between working from home and sitting in front of my computer gaming, I spend probably 8+ hours a day sitting in that chair, and have for the last 3 years. It’s still in great shape and shows almost no wear and tear.
I am right now sitting on a Steelcase Series 1, and while it doesn't have great lumbar support, it is far better than any shitty $150 "gaming" chair, and is right in your price range brand new.
Want to drop some info here, not related to your question since it’s still out of your price range, but just for others who might be browsing, since I see HM chairs come up a lot in this thread and the other one.
A lot of these fancy ergo chairs work similar to other furniture and use a network of dealers. This is important, because dealers often sell for way less than MSRP, especially when they’re buying for clients making big offers for office buildings buildouts. Some dealers can get you a great price by basically adding your chair to a big order for another client. I wanted a HM Embody and talked to 3 dealers in my area. One of them was able to get me the chair for about $1000, and this was also customized with the fabric that I wanted. Really shows the huge markup that MSRP is on this kind of item. Dealers are sometimes also willing to give you a loaner so you can try the chair at home before you buy.
Seems like you have a lot of good suggestions already, but more couldn’t hurt.
