donio, (edited ) do gaming w What are some open source games you can recommend for Linux?

Some I don’t see mentioned yet:

Scarecrow59,

Zero k, RTS

root, do gaming w If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?

Depends on thw game and what sort of mod support it has. Obviously on Steam if it has Steam workshop support. DRM free on GOG is good but at the same time Steam has been doing quite of lot of good things related to gaming on Linux and I would like them to continue doing it.

Privatepower42_,

@root @vis4valentine is the game not DRM free on steam, too?

root, (edited )

The fact that when you purchase a game on Steam and it gets aasociated to your account is a form of Digital Rights Mamagement. Not as bad compared to Denuvo (depending on who you ask), but it’s still technically DRM, just not as intrusive.

Game purchases on GOG on the other hand, while the purchase is associated to your account, the game can be installed on all “your” computers and can be run simultaneously.

@kratoz29@lemm.ee avatar

The only multiplayer game I play is Borderlands 2 with my girlfriend, and that is very once and then… So yeah, MP games are not the same for me anymore.

Well except for Jump Ultimate Stars, I always make time to play that shit whenever possible.

theangriestbird,

Tf is Jump Ultimate Stars? 😂

kratoz29,
@kratoz29@lemm.ee avatar

A DS fighting game like Super Smash Bros.

theangriestbird,

Shit that looks cool af. How are you playing that? Emulator, or?

kratoz29,
@kratoz29@lemm.ee avatar

Original hardware, but you can even play from emulator.

Take a look at the custom server, this is the discord server where we play each other and with this guide you’ll be able to set everything up.

And yes, it is cool af, here you can see some gameplays from some users from the discord server, it is not a competitive fighting game by any means, but it can get competitive 😅

theangriestbird,

idk if you’re gonna catch me on your servers, but i appreciate you sharing! maybe another adventurous soul here will follow your instructions ;)

kratoz29,
@kratoz29@lemm.ee avatar

Not my server by any means, but yeah, I was even thinking of making a post about this, I mean, the user base is so tiny on Lemmy yet and it would be like promoting a niche game to a niche community lol.

theangriestbird,

you never know when your new best friend might be hiding out in some corner of kbin. lol

buckykat, do gaming w How does multiplayer gaming fit into your life?

The only game I’ll play with strangers is FFXIV.

PALONK0, do gaming w How does multiplayer gaming fit into your life?

Overwatch 2. The casual matches are fast enough (10~20min?), and I like the teamwork in game

millie, do gaming w what's some of the best dialogue systems you've seen and why?

I loved the dialogue system in Shadowrun for SNES. It was pretty simple, didn’t really have any branches or anything, but it feels autonomous in a way that’s hard to match.

Basically, wherever you talk to someone, certain words in their lines will be in bold. Once you’ve seen one of the bolded keywords, you can ask any other character about those words. Most of them will spit out a canned response specific to that NPC unless you ask about something relevant to them, but the list of keywords is long. It makes it more than possible to play the game several times through and miss certain things. There are runners you can only hire if you get the right keywords, even parts in the main story where it takes a little wandering around trying different things to get the keywords you need or figure out where to use them. Some keywords are basically dead ends, only mentioned one or two times, maybe only in the conversation they’re found in, but others will come up again and again.

Shadowrun in general felt very open as a game. Even though it had some barriers to progress before being able to go everywhere, there’s a huge amount of freedom in general.

For its time the amount of freedom and depth in the same package was not at all the norm.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Morrowind similarly used this dialogue system, and I truly do like it a lot more than most others, even with a lot of options because it feels more like naturally discovering information and acting up on it, rather than just having a threshold on your stats, or completing quest triggers.

Zapp, do gaming w As a recovering video game addict, what is the best way to avoid 'the jitters' when exposed something that reminds you of gaming?

I’ve found diving deep into retrogames is great for my similar situation.

Games from the 80s, 90s and even some from the 00s are often designed to be played in much shorter play sessions.

sylverstream, do gaming w As a recovering video game addict, what is the best way to avoid 'the jitters' when exposed something that reminds you of gaming?

Sorry to hear about this mate. As someone else mentioned, perhaps it’s the type of game you play? I enjoy gaming and can moderate fine. However, recently started playing Overwatch (hey another Blizzard game) and noticed I got addicted. Couldn’t stop playing, thought about it a lot, etc. Reminded me of being addicted to alcohol or other drugs.

I quit playing OW2, and the urges to play started to get easier, and I enjoy gaming again.

IoSapsai,

This is exactly what I’m doing right now. I play a game that I can play for 2 hours daily max and it’s fine, I can do without it easily. I also fell into the OW2 trap and I became unbearable to the people around me.

I feel like I didn’t word myself properly because I haven’t played WoW or any of the “problematic” games for 6 months now. I managed to keep myself occupied with cross stitching and books. It’s when I see footage/hear music that I get these feelings of wanting to play again.

sylverstream,

I also fell into the OW2 trap and I became unbearable to the people around me.

Exactly this. I became grumpy and angry, couldn’t stop “because I just have to win once” and felt like an addict. It’s a very similar feeling to alcohol which I quit 5 years ago.

Take care. Good on you for managing it with other hobbies!

worfamerryman, do gaming w The Steam Deck is changing how normies think of gaming PCs.

I’m a long time pc gamer and linux gamer. I do not care to play games unless it is in a handheld mode. I have been playing my switch a lot more recently, but am really looking forward to the steamdeck.

Steady hand with a soldering iron and that could be salvaged, good luck!

Hey Alexa, how 2 soldier

First step, you need to enlist. A soldiering iron will be issued to you, there will be many like it, but that one will be yours…

Kuvwert,

I’m doing my part!

Star_FOX_dew_HOUND, do gaming w What is up with Baldur's Gate 3?

Yeesh, I’m a “Baldurs Gate Oldhead” XD man I’m getting old.

I could just cry at the fact that BG3 is download only. If they never release it hardcopy I will never be able to play it. Being out in the boonies. Even if they could just put what they can on a disc ya know?

Been looking for a good split screen to play with my gal, and yet what I’m sure is a masterpiece is out of reach.

There’s also the Dark Alliance Oldheads, they don’t need to be quite as old as me to have played those. Just replayed Dark Alliance II with my gal and it was well worth the heavy price tag for such an old title. Unlike the new Dark Alliance garbage. Which I bought to play split screen and it is not.

WagesOf,

Buy it on gog, head into town and download the installer to a usb stick.

Ashtear,

Gonna need a fast connection in town or plenty of time. The GOG install is 108GB.

entropicdrift,
!deleted5697 avatar

Not to mention it’s in 28 parts if you’re downloading the standalone installer and not using Galaxy.

WagesOf,

Yep, probably a good two hours on a coffee shop wifi. Be sure to drink lots of coffee and leave a nice tip!

Star_FOX_dew_HOUND,

What’s gog? I was hoping for it on PS5, don’t have a powerful enough computer I imagine. Just a 10 year old laptop.

WagesOf,

PCMR knows what GoG is, console users don't need to know.

Have fun on ps5 when it releases!

theangriestbird,

Sorry pal 😂 for what it’s worth, I’m old enough that I played part of BG2 on PC as a kid. But I was too young to understand THAC0 back then. Lol

I could just cry at the fact that BG3 is download only. If they never release it hardcopy I will never be able to play it. Being out in the boonies. Even if they could just put what they can on a disc ya know?

This is my first hearing this. Damn this seems like a big deal for a game of this scale?

Star_FOX_dew_HOUND,

Yeah I was teenager playing Baldurs Gate and 2 on PC. I only knew THAC0 because I was a D&D enthusiast and read my uncle’s old books.

I’m still new to Beehaw not sure how y’all are clipping pieces of the conversation, and replying.

It seems like a big deal to me, but everyone has been saying the industry is moving to online only anyways. Like the new Diablo.

<span style="color:#323232;">I read that BG3 is upwards of 150gigs and plenty of reasons and excuses for digital only. They can't fit it on one disc is the main one but still.

It seems like BG3 is getting more attention than all of Larian’s previous games combined (and maybe all of Obsidian’s recent crpgs as well).

Legendary brand name which the game actually lives up to.

My buddies and I have been on Battlebit a whole lot. It is the first fps I have played since Halo Reach and BFBC2 that has really grabbed my interest. It is just so good. The proximity and squad speak has been so good it has actually led to me making friends via an online game, which I haven't done simce I was in middle school playing Halo 3
