gaael, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of December 31st

I’ve been playing a bit of CS2 for the past weeks. It takes me way back (I played with high-school friends 20 years ago till 1.6) and I definitely suck, but I’m having fun. It still lacks fun community servers imo, but I hope to see more of them soon.

My favorite game of 2023 was Outer Wilds. I got completely immersed inside and spent a lot of quality time uncovering the storyline. I tried playing the DLC but I did not enjoy it very much, text made more sense than images for me.

The game I spent most hours on in 2023 was probably DOS2, doing both solo and coop playthroughs. Will probably be replaced by BG3 in 2024 :)

criss_cross, do games w What's your favorite game you played this year? (Doesn't have to be released this year )

Just started this one but Afterimage is becoming a big favorite of mine. A really great Metroidvania game.

Older, but also played Frostpunk. It’s a really great twist on a city building game. Highly recommended.

One odd ball I’ll throw out is Last Case of Benedict Fox. It’s a complete mess of a game, but the exploration and puzzles are a lot of fun. I never realized how much I want a metroidvania where you go around just solving puzzles. If LCBF just dropped all combat and focused on puzzle-solving it would have been a lot better.

UNWILLING_PARTICIPANT, do gaming w What's your favorite Biopunk video game?

Haven’t played much in this genre, but loved all of Axiom Verge

Remaining glued to Baldurs Gate 3. Enjoying a playthrough as a battle bard.

Did fire up Foxhole again to get into some trench combat. Had a ton of fun doing mortar support.

Favorite game of the year? BG3, hands down.

I can’t speak to the others, but I have a couple 8bitdo controllers and they’re fantastic. If the aliexpress listing is legit, I’d go with that one, no question.

I’ve never heard of the other two brands, but cursory googling doesn’t sound promising for them.

Glide, (edited )

I just bought a series of 8bitdo controllers, and they are fantastic. The off green/purple USB Xbox controllers are literally $20 USD a pop and imo feel better than the Series S controller. And that’s their cheapest option; if you are willing to spend money for more features, they keep getting better.

OP said he wants motion control though? I feel like his options for motion control controllers are EXTREMELY limited. Like Nintendo proprietary limited.

Apparently the 8Bitdo Ultimate DOES have motion control. I’d dare say it’s just hands down the correct option, unless you want to just flat buy a Switch Pro controller. That said, if off-colours don’t bother you, the Switch targeted Ultimate C Bluetooth is cheap af, has motion controls and actually has ABXY in the correct format.

@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Aunty Ethel’s lair is a non-rest area in act 1. And I think there’s also one in the Githyanki crèche. And short rests are allowed. And by that time I usually have a few of those potions that are essentially a long rest. Or a short rest with benefits. And there’s a restoration pod in the mindflayer colony.

Seconding 8bitdo.

Very satisfied with mine. Not the ultimate, but the SN30 Pro+. Has no issues connecting to my PC or switch, no mechanical issues so far either, after about 4 years.

I put about 300 hours into No Man’s Sky this year.

I have the 8BitDo Pro 2 controller, it’s great.

However the thumbstick’s rubber eventually crumbled off after a year or so, so I 3D printed these replacements (it’s for SF30, but fits Pro 2), then I got cheap Switch thumbsticks rubber pad to put on top of them. IIRC, you might be able to request thumbstick replacement from them. The 3D printed treplacement + cheap caps feels kinda better than the original.

8bitdo Ultimate - 50€

Check carefully which variant you’re buying, if you’d like Hall Effect sticks.

There are several 8BitDo “Ultimate” controllers that do not have Hall Effect sticks; I found the branding to be pretty confusing.

This has Hall Effect sticks:

As does this:

This does not:

Nor does this:

Sasori323,

I just have one problem with the 8bitdo.

If you go to the website, I can see it says “motion controls (switch only)” and I don’t know if I should be worried about that considering I want to play emulated switch games ON PC

EDIT: and about the variations, thanks for pointing that out, I was aware of the Ultimate C existed and I did supposed it was some sort of “lite” version. But thanks anyways

JohnEdwa,

Motion control support on PC is rather rare as almost every PC game uses xinput, and therefore almost every controller will simply identify itself as an Xbox controller for the best compatibility. You basically have to check on a controller by controller basis if and how motion controls can be enabled on PC.

I do know that some of the 8bitdo controllers can be configured to show up as Switch Pro Controllers on PC with working motion controls.

Sasori323,

I have been researching a bit and it seems you can use them if you connect to your pc but with the switch mode or something like that.

Is that what you mean?

DebatableRaccoon,

I can’t say for sure with 8bitdo but I can say the KK2’s motion controls work on PC so long as the emulator has them. I’d assume this is the case with 8bitdo but I can’t check as I found the problem I had with them to be the neutral wrist/hand position to be uncomfortable very quickly.

I was aware of the Ultimate C existed and I did supposed it was some sort of “lite” version

Yeah, but just to be clear, it’s not just the Ultimate C that doesn’t have them. The fourth link above is to a non-Bluetooth Ultimate variant with no “C” in its name; that particular variant also doesn’t have Hall Effect sticks.

For me, it was annoying because — at least when I bought mine, haven’t checked recently — 8bitdo doesn’t make a Ultimate controller with an XBox button layout and Hall Effect sticks. You gotta settle for a Nintendo-layout controller. You can remap the buttons in software on your computer, and they apparently sell replacement button caps if you want to make the controller , but it’s not internally using the XBox layout, annoyingly-enough.

You sound like you’re specifically wanting a Nintendo layout, so you probably don’t need an XBox layout, but you might still want to be careful that whatever you order does in fact have the Hall Effect sticks.

Doesn’t steam have native support for ds4?

Albbi,

Yeah, it does. This can sometimes require launching steam in Big Picture Mode first, then select the game you want. A bit annoying to take that extra step but Steam has upped their ps5 controller support lately.

You can still launch games through steam and use steam’s assets.

How do you not know you can add any game or program to steam?

    Moonrise2473,

But I play mostly from gog, and my Intel GPU doesn’t play nice with the steam overlay (transparency becomes black and everything becomes 5 fps)

Also it means I have to waste 15 precious minutes troubleshooting the game. Pad isn’t recognized, try via steam, add it manually, see if it works via xinput, and so on.

ds4drv was working last time I checked

    Moonrise2473,

    It’s for Linux, not windows

Bluetooth controller support on Linux is much better
