I’m with you, Mario 64 is one of my all time favorites.

i still play it every few years and sometimes I’ll get the urge to watch the latest world-record speedrun, it’s so much fun to even just watch.

pretty much the only game i do that with.

great screenshots too. there are so many mods for SM64 but I almost always play vanilla, so it’s fun to see you guys as different characters.

SM64 Toad is a psychopath for sure.

congrats on getting to share the game with your friend, and almost hitting a year with your screenshots!

misterdoctor, do games w Rematch

I’ve been loving Rematch. It’s so far outside the norm of what I would typically play but I’m having a blast. For me, the controls have taken time to get used to but I think it’s just because I don’t play games like this ever. The more I’ve played (and I’m playing a ton), the better I get. The controls are becoming more natural and I’m starting to develop muscle memory. It’s very satisfying consistently getting better.

For me, switching to 3v3 made a big difference. It forced me to get better because I was handling the ball way more often.

My biggest issues now are teammates never passing and terrible goalkeepers. I’m constantly seeing people leave the box empty and just take the ball downfield. I just hop into the goal every time it happens but it’s annoying seeing this sort of selfish playing. Teams that treat it as a full on cooperative team sport are always more successful. And even if we lose those games, it’s just so much more fun working together.

Quicky,

It's wild how little passing there is. Almost every time 2 or 3 passes are strung together, there's a goal. But very few people seem to understand that yet.

It's always very clear who's actually played 5-a-side in real life before. Anyone who played like 90% of Rematch players in a proper game would get an absolute bollocking from their teammates.

Auntievenim,

Its definitely hard to pick up and get good at controlling the ball and having spacial awareness. My issue is that regardless of having just picked up the game they try to learn the mechanics while 2v1 at midfield.

When I started I played back and let the game unfold until I had a plan of attack. Passing the ball around, jumping in to goalkeep, covering the open man, basic stuff. Im level 30 now and every time I’ve got level 1 teammates they basically throw the game trying to do rainbow flicks and juke out the entire defense while I’m standing in goal wide open. YOU ARE NOT HIM!

Having even the most basic understanding of actual soccer makes you a god in this game just about. I have been loving it so far. I just hope people trying it out get good teammates to show them how great the game can be.

It actually looks so much fun but broke me doesn’t have a job to buy it. Glad you are having fun. Genuinely hope the fifa playerbase gives this game a chance.

It's on Gamepass if that makes any difference.

I learned to speedrun this but stopped from intense wrist/lower arm pain. I wasn’t great but I could do a sub 20 16 star and pull off breezeless occasionally. Never topless.

It’s still fun to play casually. I have an N64 so I’ll go get all 120 stars every couple years.

I never understood this one. Why is the Red Cross so annoyed about videogames depicting the red cross to mean health?

renegadespork,
@renegadespork@lemmy.jelliefrontier.net avatar

I think they were worried about their branding being associated with violence. In the 90s, there was a ton of anti-video game propaganda branding it as violent garbage that was corrupting our children.

Ironically, video games are very good at conditioning human responses to iconography. So despite the Red Cross’ hostility, video games still succeeded in conditioning a lot of people to instantly associate plus signs (any color) with health.

Kimmie,

i think it has to do with trademarking law
if enough people use is to mean other stuff they can lose their trademark

edit: i looked it up and its called genericize

unexposedhazard,

Its pretty obvious to me.

The red cross, red crescent and red crystal emblems provide protection for military medical services and relief workers in armed conflicts.

Under no circumstance is it acceptable to create a situation where something could be mistakenly identified as being associated with the Red Cross. If it appears in the game it might appear on a publicly visible computer screen, poster, TV, etc and thats not acceptable.

Skua,

It is, genuinely, in the Geneva Conventions that nobody should use the red cross except for to designate medical staff and establishments that are protected under the conventions. The idea is to make sure that there is absolutely never any doubt that that symbol means anything else in order to minimise the risk to those people

ThePyroPython,

Yeah they have a legitimate case for defending the use of the symbol so aggressively and the best way to avoid is to use the green and white variant that is used on pretty much every first-aid kit sold.

Still has the desired effect for both parties.

JackbyDev,

To add, the first time I heard about it was through the video game stuff. So if anything, I think we should view them going after game devs as a form of spreading awareness. When it hits headlines it makes it clear just how important it is to not use it in other contexts.

Owlboi,

i look at this and nod. then i look at sponsored fortnite skins with the red cross and realize they dont give a fuck about that actually, theyre just greedy.

Skua,

I haven't played Fortnite so I might be missing something, but glancing at screenshots and promotional stuff it looks like they're consistently using white on red instead of red on white

Owlboi,

damn you right. fuck them anyway

…And Johnson & Johnson.

ViatorOmnium,

The red cross sign has a very specific meaning and protection under international law. They don't want the symbol to be used outside of the agreed uses because they don't want that meaning, and consequently the protection it affords, to get muddled.

They also don't like when a red cross is used on a random first aid kit in the real world.

spankmonkey,
@spankmonkey@lemmy.world avatar

What about on a country’s flag?

ViatorOmnium,

Everyone is betting Tonga will not get itself into a war.

But if it hypothetically happened, I assume they would be pressured to use an alternative war flag by the international community.

On a more serious note, applying international laws against sovereign states is always more complicated than to enforce them against individuals and organizations operating inside of signatory states.

My first question: Did they change the gun play?

Because that feeling I got from OW gun play was “spammy, unsatisfying, boring” either in kill time, movement or timing.

The weapons are simple, but you don’t get the arena gameplay of map control, ammunition control and weapon cycling of arena shooters.

A single weapon is not complex to use as a weapon in CS or DirtyBomb.

To be honest Dirty bomb does health and ammo management better.

Everything I hear sounds good, but I never heared them fixing guna.

Poopfeast420, (edited )
@Poopfeast420@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Nope, the game is and will probably always be spammy. Everyone has unlimited ammo. I definitely prefer this btw.

There’s map control of course, just not like arena shooters. Most maps have changing objectives, around which the fights happen.

Instead of more difficult weapons you’re managing your abilities and cooldowns.

That’s just the kind of game OW is.

Eyck_of_denesle,

Ig thats just how the game is. I loved Valorants gun sounds better. Also the feeling when you 1 tap someone on a tac shooter is too peak. Sadly it’s playerbase is too toxic and the game isn’t on linux.
