You can’t make it the “year of the Linux desktop” for anyone but yourself.

qwestjest78, do gaming w Knock yourself out

I have a PS5 sitting unplugged. I was so excited to get it in 2020, but now I have not touched in a year and a half.

Amazing how a steamdeck just crushes modern day consoles. You cant beat that game catalog.

The_Picard_Maneuver,
@The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world avatar

I was really motivated to get one to play the Demon’s Souls remake, beat it 3 times in a week, and since then I’ve probably spent more time updating the system and collecting the monthly ps+ games than actually playing.

Sixtyforce,
@Sixtyforce@sh.itjust.works avatar

I gave up after PS4 had no games and the few it did have were ported. Except Bloodborne, but emulation caught up and runs it better.

Now I’m just PC/Deck + Nintendo. Xbox I dumped after the 360.

Or just PC/Deck and a used Switch 2 later is my new plan. It’s going to cost too much new.

Maybe not interesting, but it was a big change from being the guy who owned every successful console and some oddballs imports from the 70’s onwards at one point.

shifty,

I’m pretty similar in the console to PC shift. Pretty much had all consoles and handhelds through Xbox 360/Switch/PS3.

I still miss the Wii controls (I hate moving my neck for anything VR) but I don’t think with Switch 2 motion controls/mouse will get me back on Nintendo. Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime Trilogy were awesome on Wii. Only reason I bought a Switch was for Zelda but I didn’t care for it and eventually gave my switch away, never finished BoTW. I don’t think Metroid Prime 4 is enough for me to justify buying a whole console. So I’m planning to get a steamdeck instead of the switch 2.

If we ever see a world where nintendo games are on steam and you don’t need a nintendo account to play them, I would totally buy up all my favorite games and play them on PC.

Otherwise I really don’t care for the business model of re-buying the games I already own, just re-released on the latest console. Don’t care for paying for online access. And the few games they have really aren’t compelling enough for me to justify buying a console when I have hundreds of unplayed games in my steam library. (my humble bundle subscription snowballed my library lol)

Sixtyforce,
@Sixtyforce@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah we’re on the same page haha.

The steam backlog included. I actually started chipping away at mine last year inspired by a tuber challenging themselves to get through all of theirs in a dramatically arbitrary amount time for the clicks.

Basically doing the same without the pressured deadline:

  • go alphabetically not picking and choosing or it’ll be all crap you keep skipping over to pick from at the end.
  • play for two hours minimum
  • if you don’t like the game by then, drop it forever.

I got it down from 304 games to…126 as of yesterday lol. Not humble bundle here, but the very first steam sales. The worst are the old indie games publshers bundled in that I didn’t seek out myself. Most simply do not hold up if they ever really did.

MrScottyTay,

I know the exact video you’re on about and it was great

AdamBomb,

Same. I was so hyped for the hardware, but the games never came. I guess it’s because Sony went all-in on live service games that ended up getting cancelled instead of backing lots of single player games like they traditionally had. Steam Deck took my PS5’s place and eventually even got me into PC gaming to play what my Deck couldn’t — and PC gaming on Linux at that. I doubt I will buy any future PlayStations now, not after how this generation went. There hasn’t been a single PS5 game that I wanted to play that hasn’t come to PC anyway. Like you said, can’t beat the catalog. Plus modding capability and backwards compatibility.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

You can’t beat that game catalog

It’s impossible to beat “every game ever made.” Which while it may not play some games now, the platform will eventually play those, too. One way or another.

The shelf would only have Bloodborne and Demon’s Souls on it

Empricorn,

Well, there’s also Persona 5 Royal. But, like Bloodborne and The Demon’s Souls remake, it’s just a different version of an earlier game…

Kusimulkku,

That reminds me, I need to buy Skyrim for the PS5

Empricorn,

And GTA V!

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

They keep pushing GTA V for free on PSN, except that it’s not GTA V. Period. Full stop. It’s GTA :O without the single player and absolutely nothing on the store page itself says this. You only find out when booting it up. 😬

Empricorn,

Wow, playing Grand Theft Auto, ditching the single-player, and only doing Online… It’s like ordering a pizza and only eating the crust.

DragonTypeWyvern,

I assumed it was commenting on PS5 pushing digital copies

Kolanaki,

Bloodborne is a PS4 game so it would just be Demon’s Souls.

Blue Prince- I’m taking a break after getting to a certain point. It’s been great fun and the underlying message seems very timely. Gran Turismo 7- it’s my “in-between” game and I like to play the weekly challenges. Vampire Survivors- my favorite game on my phone. I was on a break but I’m back to seeing gem explosions when I close my eyes.

@hollerpixie@lemm.ee avatar

I just went through this tree about a week ago. Downloaded the app for iOS to try it and would say it wasn’t ready for mainstream. It looks very similar to discord but it just consistently would crash or send me back to the website in order to get anything done. Even the main channel for Revolt would hang and not load properly. That and iOS is on TestFlight… not gonna work well for non tech enthusiasts who know how about it. That

I have a small server on Discord and would love to move it. But the people on it aren’t super tech savvy and the replacement will need to work. Plus, I have less desire to go from one centralized service to another, especially when the backup doesn’t work well. Wish Element would get it together with the phone app and make spaces appear as they do on the computer. That and stable call/video channels.

It would be nice to see a capable app built on matrix platform. Or just another capable platform that has a well working app. Just my two cents.

derin,
@derin@lemmy.beru.co avatar

SchildiChat Next is a mini-fork of Element X with proper spaces support (and some other nice UI additions).

I say mini-fork as it’s basically just EleX with some UI patches - so it follows EleX actively.

LordKitsuna,

Aaaaand this touches on the problem with matrix in general, no standard is properly followed, way too many forks with feature support all over the place

derin,
@derin@lemmy.beru.co avatar

There’s only one standard, it has no forks. The discussion is about a filtering feature.

A lot of people don’t seem to respect spaces and communities - from my perspective it looks like the devs are currently pivoting to make the official client look and act more like Telegram/Signal/WhatsApp than Discord/IRC.

Your issue is that the dev team of EleX not prioritizing a feature you want.

If anything, this is a strength of an open source ecosystem: someone who agrees with you was able to, months ago, setup a fork that appeals to your work flow.

Try that with Discord, next time!

LordKitsuna,

There is a single standard with no forks, I said not a single one followed. I run my own Matrix Home Server and use it frequently, there are a lot of different clients and there are a good number of them that do run their own features that are not exactly in Spec because one does not yet exist in the official spec. Stickers used to be a good example of that I remember when there were like three different clients Each of which implemented them in a different weird way until the spec finally landed on an implementation.

And even within this back there are some basic features not supported on certain clients and other such problems. I’m just saying it’s not an alternative to Discord and it will never be mainstream because it’s too confusing and frustrating from the perspective of a standard user.

Same concept that made bluesky get popular over mastodon, trying to find anything on Mastodon of interest is a chore because there’s no real Central spot to do everything the very nature of it is that it’s scattered to the winds, there’s also multiple apps available for Mobile on Mastodon Each of which have different layouts, different features, and normal people that just want to be able to find their topic of Interest can’t be bothered to deal with that

derin,
@derin@lemmy.beru.co avatar

Yeah, all good points - especially the stuff relating to stickers (also, custom emojis).

Still, I’m hoping element gets their shit together and improves the default element apps (also brings Web/Desktop up to par with Mobile).

I will continue using element, signal, and simple x instead. They have all the security and privacy features this product doesn’t.

In addition to the mentions that this isn’t encrypted, doesn’t have video chat, etc, it’s also difficult to set up with little documentation and an enormous tech stack. They also had some recent controversy about open source licensing that gives me a bit of worry. I decided to go with a self-hosted synapse server.

Letstakealook, do notjustbikes w NotJustBikes uses Linux!

As someone who used Linux for years, then left due to issues with compatibility, and have recently returned; Linux distros have come a long way in ease of use for average/casual users like myself. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well everything just works. I’ve had to research a few things I wanted to do with my system, but those actions were going beyond the most common use cases. I don’t know if it is the “year of the Linux desktop,” but Linux is definitely in a place now that greatly increases its approchability. I know the community is very big on customization and tinkering, but that isn’t what the average pc user values, so having distros that are functional with zero or minimal tinkering will certainly be a boon to wider adoption. With apple being a “boutique” company and Microsofts continuous anticonsumer practices (my reason for switching), I definitely forsee a growth in Linux market share.
