LostWanderer, do games w What's a cancelled game you really miss?

Honestly, I kind of miss the idea of what “Life By You” could’ve been, as it had the game designer for The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 behind it. That game could’ve been a return to form and an actual threat to EA’s watered down and extremely pricey Sims Slop. If only the team Rod Humble had assembled were able to gel their concept into a reality, with Paradox’s backing, could’ve created something magical. Alas, it was not to be…I still imagine the potential for player driven storytelling that Life By You was offering!

Nibodhika,

This one gets me as well, Paradox had a great history of maintaining and upgrading the base game with money made from DLCs, some of which are content/feature related and others are way cheaper and are cosmetics, all of that while providing mod support. And that model would have been awesome in a sims like game.

LostWanderer,

It would’ve been interesting, given that Rod Humble wanted to create a fully fleshed out base game…The DLC for Life By You likely would’ve been merely outfits, additional hairs made post launch, and possibly furniture/architecture style sets that could be priced at a reasonable rate. Meaning more players would’ve bought it and those funds would be reinvested in the game for more work to be done! The mod support would’ve been nice for those that want it; I often don’t care for mods (Prepare Carefully, for Rimworld is one of the few that I adore). This situation is truly vexing because the Life Sim scene needs a well funded direct competitor to The Sims that isn’t afraid to make a coherent and interesting Simulation game; one that is built with an engine that actual works and in-depth gameplay! The loss of Life By You will irk me for years to come.

Stamau123,

at least there’s Inzoi, from what little i’ve seen it seems like a good sims game

LostWanderer,

I lost hope for that game because they use GenAI to power to create a character, clothing, furniture color/pattern customization. I won’t play a game that utilizes GenAI, as base requirements are increased, GenAI is a security hazard, and it has a damaging effect on the environment. The fact that InZOI requires a constant internet connection as well due to the game’s reliance on GenAI.

Stamau123,

it’s not like it’s some chatGPT plagerism factory, it has an AI to generate new assets based on the art already made by the devlopers, to cut down on time. But always online is lame.

LostWanderer,

GenAI is the line in the sand for me, as that is merely a step towards pushing creatives out of creative fields. While Krafton C-Suite executives may say they get their data directly from preexisting data from devs; I’m not particularly trusting of those who implement GenAI in their games.

I’m going to focus on Paralives and Vivaland as those seem more interesting in my opinion.

Unreal Tournament series

UE4 movement was buttery smooth

3dmvr,

I really am dissapointed in current gaming, thought wed have a game in each genre that supported custom content, like ue would let ppl make their own maps/weapons, etc. everquest landmark for mmo worlds, etc.

3dmvr,

maybe with desktop tools being so fleshed out well see better in game tools for creation, tho now I use blender and want more games to support mods and custom content.

abigscaryhobo,

Garry’s mod/source games is about the closest we have to that. Or i guess Roblox too…?

3dmvr,

s@ndbox but it really depends how it goes, they are leaning more towards being a game engine than something like gmod where you can bring stuff over from one world to another, like scifi element hoverboards, etc. to a fantasy world and vice versa.

Don’t know if it was ever announced to be in development and existed in any form outside of being told there was going be 3 games, but would absolutely love to have seen what the 3rd Sonic book game would have been like. I still need to play the Black Knight game, but would absolutely hop on board the 3rd if it existed.

That, and would absolutely LOVE if Sega uncanceled the Riders series. Best racing game series to ever exists in my opinion. Too bad the 3rd game sucked so hard it caused the beautiful rose that is the Riders series to wither away.

Acidbath, do games w Suggestions for a top down game that is genuinely different to all the others?

I apologize if my recommendations are not what you are looking for but have you tried:

Disco Elysium? Cuz that game blew my fucking mind. I voice acting and characters are superb.

Signalis. Its such a lovely artsy game thats like resident evil but more story driven imo (less survival).

I love poe2 with wasd movement. I beg you to try it out. It was something i was hesitant at first but now I wish all arpg’s had this feature.

Kenshi is also a great option but I don’t think its for everyone. Still recommend it though cuz the world is very mysterious in first playthrough.

Starwars Galaxies, pretty CU

MrScottyTay,

That’s not cancelled, that’s just a game that was taken down.

There’s a bunch of private servers for it too. My first experience is the game was through one of them and it was pretty great.

Wilco,

Man I miss SWG.

MrScottyTay, do games w What's a cancelled game you really miss?

Star wars 1313 was THE game I was waiting for. Got very sad when it got cancelled.

Also all is the in-progress and for some completed content that just got shelved for Disney infinity because the new management at Disney forgot why games mattered. (Same time when they absolutely gutted lucasarts). Just for them to start from scratch again a few years later when they realised they still need a videogame presence. Which makes the losses of what could have been hurt more.

titan fall 2. never actually got to appreciate it because by the time i found it the server matching was completely broken. all they need to do is allow private servers or fix the matching system and the game would be playable. seems like plenty of people want to play it. I don’t know why they decided let the game die instead. makes no damn sense.

It’s playable now on vanilla servers, but the North Star client also exists, pilot.

This is before my time but I remember reading about a canceled movie tie-in game for Star Trek: First Contact.

Careful with SD; they quickly wear out with lots of small writes. I once fried one as homedir while trying to compile Firefox.

PraiseTheSoup,

Are SD cards not still the standard storage for digital cameras? I can think of few things designed to produce more small writes than a digital camera.

CMonster,

This person is confusing me. I use SD cards for my cameras and drones and routinely move files and reformat them with no issue. I have several cards that are over 6 years old and used daily. SD is the standard for all current cameras and drones.

neon_nova,

I’ve only heard about SD cards data getting corrupted when doing lots of small writes. This was something people talked about when the raspberry pi first came out I think. But, I’ve been using micro-sd cards for years for all sorts of things and never had a problem.

Kraven_the_Hunter,

I’ve had an SD card in my dashcam for 6+ years now. Constantly writing and over writing from -20F (sometimes lower but it’s protected so I’ll stop at -20) to well over 110F when baking in the summer sun.

It’s got a battery so it continues to run for hours after I shut it off. Used to go 17 hours on the battery but that’s probably way less now.

My point being that the SD card has been rock solid in very extreme conditions for 6 years now. Sure I made sure to get the extreme use version, I but don’t buy this kind of thing on eBay or Craigslist and you’ll be fine. Maybe stay away from Amazon too.

itslilith,
@itslilith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

A digital camera has several megabyte writes, every once in a while, filling up the SD card evenly. Even bad SD cards usually have many thousand write cycles before they degrade, so that’s not likely to be an issue. What is worse is if you have a log file, for example, that is stored in a fixed position on the card and gets updated several times a second

PyroNeurosis,

I’d like to know more about this- as far as I know they are solid state, meaning no moving parts (ergo more reliable)

MonkderVierte, (edited )

Hmm, for now only about the general fragility, due to simple controllers. But i think i have an article about this saved somewhere.

Btw, if you reformat an SD, I/O and lifetime will fall sharply, because of some block size parameters differing, above mentioned article goes in detail about this stuff.

Edit: it wasn’t this but has some nice info too:

greybeard,

Each write to a memory location wears out that location slightly degrading it’s oxide layer. Flash memories compensate for this by “wear-leveling” which spreads the writes around to different locations to make sure the device wears out evenly.

It will mark bad locations and stop using them. If you run with the device almost full then it cannot effectively wear level and the few open locations will be overused and wear out.

It’s not specifically small writes, it’s the number of writes to any one location. But of course it’s faster to do small writes so you end up with more if they are all small.

Also, there are flash memories optimized for performance that will wear out faster and others that are optimized for longevity that write slower.

Keeping the device cool will extend it’s life also.

For longest life, keep the device cool and mostly empty and minimize writes. In critical applications find a device that optimizes lifetime over performance.

MonkderVierte,

Hold on, i think i now remember: this one was about SD usually having smaller block size, so each small write causing a multiple in blocks written, i think?

Zess,

Sounds like you got a shitty SD card. High endurance cards are recommended for frequent writing.

MonkderVierte,

Can’t say for sure, because all are mixing high quality flash with recycled from the scrapyard quality. The big names only a bit less of the scrapyard.

LucidNightmare,

Yes, this. I got a 1tb micro SD card a few years ago for my hacked Switch (Fuck Nintendo, especially now that they’ve went after emulation) and finding a LEGITIMATE SD card was very hard, especially since I wanted the high-capacity and they don’t just sell those at Wal-Mart. Be VERY careful about buying SD cards folks, lots of scammers out there in the markets now.

EDIT: forgot to add that I received TWO duds, fake SD cards that were NOT 1tb, when trying to get my SD card

brbposting,

How annoying is that! Where did you get the fakes?

Another question. Is that a separate issue? Like let’s say if you buy from Best Buy:

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/57ba3f37-fff3-4747-95dd-77c63ca0d6a8.jpeg

Sounds like @MonkderVierte was saying it’s still a crapshoot even if it’s totally genuine. Like if you buy 10 for 10 different handhelds, maybe only half of them are still working after a couple years but the rest of them last two or three times longer… <speculating>

MonkderVierte,

Yes, that.

LucidNightmare,

Mine were off of Amazon since I live about 2 hours away from anything other than Walmart. :’)

IndustryStandard,

Endurance SD cards made for cctv cameras are the way to go. The Endurance versions are slower and slightly more expensive but they last a lot of writes.
