From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call a temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal. Even in death I serve the Omnissiah.

There are a lot of ways to measure that.

I guess one reasonable metric is how long I probably played it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_Combat:_A_Bridge_Too_Far and an old computer pinball game, http://www.littlewingpinball.com/doc/en/gameinfo/loonylabyrinth/index.html probably rank pretty highly.

Another might be how long after its development it’s still considered reasonably playable. I’d guess that maybe something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Man might rate well there.

Another might be how influential the game is. I think that “genre-defining” games like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfenstein_3D would probably win there.

Another might be how impressed I was with a game at the time of release. Games that made major technical or gameplay leaps would rank well there. Maybe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfenstein_3D or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myst.

Another might be what the games I play today are – at least once having played them sufficiently to become familiar with them – since presumably I could play pretty much any game out there, and so my choice, if made rationally, should identify the best options for me that I’m aware of. That won’t work for every sort of genre, as it requires replayability – an adventure game where experiencing the story one time through is kind of the point would fall down here – but I think that it’s a decent test of the library of games out there. Recently I’ve played https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Division_2 singleplayer, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_Command singleplayer, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataclysm:_Dark_Days_Ahead, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_Dungeon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RimWorld and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen_Not_Included tend to be in the recurring cycle.

The greatest single-playthrough game would be a fun category. I think my picks for that might be What Remains of Edith Finch, Gone Home, Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars, or Grim Fandango. Fire Watch would probably get an honourable mention.

A "pinacle of a (mostly) defunct genre" category might be a good one too. I would argue that Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 is the best isometric RTS games ever made.

Portal (1&2)

grandel,

Portal is amazing, also the community DLC but unfortunately not my greatest.

I’d go with something like Satisfactory or Dota 2 (gasp).

Minecraft, circa 2015. It was a religion.

MajorHavoc,

Ooh. Good pick.

I satisfy my nostalgia for previous versions of Minecraft with Luanti.

Love Tales of Berseria. Velvet’s English voice actress excellently communicated such complex emotions ranging from anger, compassion, grief, and peace. Probably time for another replay!

Only started playing it fairly recently. It’s been hanging out in my Steam library for some time after I received it from Humble Monthly quite some time ago. Decided to try it on my Deck. Runs flawlessly despite being marked as “unsupported” by Steam.

English voice acting is surprisingly good. In a JRPG I’d always find someone who’s jarring to listen to, and it’s pretty terrible if that’s the main character. But so far I haven’t found any character that annoyed me, and like you said, the actress of Velvet seems to have no weakness in voice acting skill; she can sound soft and tender, moody and dark, and scream with rage. I wish anime had more English VAs like that, instead of the default 3 voices everyone seems to use.

Not sure how I feel about combat, though. I know it’s a staple of the Tales series, but I’d much rather fight enemies on the map than being sucked into an encounter like a turn based JRPG.

I’m at the part where Velvet joins with a pirate Reaper to take over a fortress to clear the way forward. I’ve cleared out the control room and soon will be capturing an enemy battleship. So far the story has been… incredibly edgy. I’m not sure if it’ll change, but Velvet is basically female Sasuke from Naruto Shippuden in attitude. I really like the presentation, however. Cutscenes are animated in-engine and transition to animated anime slides. Very clever.

Played it on a friends new Switch and bought a Switch and that game three days later. I was so immersed in this weird and wonderful world…
