hogart, do games w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

Little Big Adventure 2. Just before the last boss I managed to save myself on the last island without a way to leave it. But I needed to leave and get another Ball or w/e it was to unluck a door. It was my first real pc game experience ever. Dunno why I stuck with this hobby after that tbh :)

GrammatonCleric, do games w Do you find the description Live Service Game off-putting?
@GrammatonCleric@lemmy.world avatar

I’m fine with it, if it’s fun enough. I’m no gaming activist/snob.

Boiglenoight,

I’m grateful for activists, particularly those with a focus on archiving gaming. That’s another area where I think supporting Live Service Games might be shortsighted on the part of the consumer. By accepting it as a practice, ownership is ceded toward the publisher or creator. We’re less owners and more renters when it comes to gaming property.

I remember when I bought Street Fighter 2 for the SNES and realized, I no longer have to go to the arcade to play this game. I no longer have to submit an endless amount of quarters to play what I can play endlessly at home for a one-time fee. It was an amazing feeling. And with LSG it’s like we’re coming back around.

@pamymaf@kbin.run avatar

Pathologic 2, it's a Russian horror game. There are real, permanent repercussions for dying and loading a save won't help you get rid of them. Sadly saying too much is a huge spoiler, but there's actually a storyline that's revealed with each death. Your deaths also affect the physical world.

Xanvial, do gaming w 23 years after I first played it, I finally beat Final Fantasy Tactics [Heavy Spoilers]

If you’re interested in playing FF14 (an MMORPG), some of the optional raids are set in the far future of FF Tactics story. The raid series is called “Return to Ivalice” if you want to google it.

Btw, I think there’s a rumor that there’ll be a remake of FFT

Adramis, (edited )

I played some FF14, but got lost in the sauce of the seemingly never-ending story quest. The minute-to-minute gameplay wasn’t exciting for me, so I was trying to hold out for the super duper awesome raids I heard about, but those raids seemed to get further and further away every time I played.

I’m not sure whether to be excited about a remaster or scared. I played the PSX version instead of WotL already, and skipped the out-of-world tie in characters (Cloud / better Mustadio guy). I’d be interested to see what they do with it, but I might not end up playing it even though I’d love to see new Ivalice Alliance content.

NakariLexfortaine, do gaming w What are some games that "spin" failure states?

This is an odd one, but Rimworld.

If your colony is close to collapsing, you have a chance for a “Man in Black” event where a stranger in black comes in and, hopefully, turns it all around.

But what if the MiB doesn’t trigger? Hell, what if they’re a pacifist pyromaniac with a meth addiction who wandered into a mass of cannibal sex slavers having a rave over the ashes and dies?

Someone will eventually come. It might take in-game years, but eventually, a pawn will come and want to make those ruins home. You can try to rebuild.

Admittedly, it can be quicker to just call it done and roll up a fresh colony over watching the seasons pass, but I like how even a complete loss doesn’t mean the story is done.

Kovukono,

Wait, does that actually happen? I thought that was just a message and no one came, no matter how long you wait.

NakariLexfortaine,

It can take a stupid long time, but eventually an event should cycle through saying someone wants to join the colony. There used to be mods to force the event after meeting certain conditions, but I have no idea if they’re still maintained.

Profilename1, do gaming w Are there still any solid, updated minecraft modpacks around?

Yeah, modded Minecraft is still a big deal. You can join us over at !moddedminecraft if you want. The mod Create is a big deal right now, and rightfully so. It may well be the greatest of all time, as far as Minecraft mods go.

figjam, do games w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

I played Earthbound as a kid and got stuck in a golem without the item needed to get out. Since I got it used I didn’t have the game guide. No idea how much stuff I missed but I never picked it up again.

abraxas,

I remember that, and I remember finding a way out too. I just don’t remember what it was.

I’m pretty sure that’s not a full-on softlock. Just so bad it feels like one if you miss something.

ShaunaTheDead, do gaming w What are some games that "spin" failure states?
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

I'm not sure if it qualifies exactly as what you're describing, but Metal Gear Solid 2 had a moment where they subvert the game over screen. At some point in the fight a game over screen comes up but it's full of typos like "fission mailed" instead of "mission failed" and there's a small window in the top-left where the fight is still on-going.

Also, notably, all the soulsbourne games kind of subvert the player's death by making it basically required to continue most of the time.

fernandofig,
@fernandofig@reddthat.com avatar

I don’t think this qualifies. That moment you’re referring to is more a “breaking the 4th wall” situation for a sort of comic effect, which is a staple on most of the entries on the series, not an actual reversal of a failure state. Something similar happens on MGS1 on the fight with Psycho Mantis, for example.

Coelacanth, do games w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Disco Elysium has a number of potential soft locks, though you kind of have to go out of your way to actually get into one. The easiest one is probably paying for your hostel room the second night. Usually a combination of decisions and unlucky dice rolls are necessary to actually get locked, and/or poor use of skill points (meaning you can’t spend one to re-try the crucial roll).

There is also a seemingly minor decision in a side quest that can make a certain check during the ending unwinnable and thus lock you out of one of the most impactful moments in the game.

espiritu_p, do gaming w What are some games that "spin" failure states?

I made some heavy mistakes in Act 1 of Baldurs Gate 3 and the game is still continuing, now with fewer options for characters that I can include in my party, because one died permanently, one left and one even refused to join.

If that's want you meant?

Pfnic,

Did you raid the grove?

Also I think what they meant is, that on a total-party-kill instead of having to reload a save, the game continues with a path to resurrection sub-plot or something like that.

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

Odd, I got TPK'd in a regular combat encounter and it just prompted me to reload a save.

Pfnic,

Sorry, I might have confused you there. I was giving an example for a sub-plot that, afaik doesn’t exist in BG3. Having to reload is probably not what OP was looking for

espiritu_p,

No. Just killed too many Tiefling.
First they held my friend Laezael hostage.
Then they got aggro when I tried to read their mind. Then they wanted to imprison me for looting the corses - as if the corpses had any use for their possessions any longer. And in the end they interfered when I wanted to bring Zazza home through the remains of the Tiefling camp. As if they had not learned to that point...
But even though i helped defend the grove (and the few surviving Tieflings) and they showed great gratitude to me for helping them, Karlach was no longer willing to join my team.

tetris11, do gaming w What are some games that "spin" failure states?

Kenshi. Though usually that means that your corpse was found by slavers, nursed back to health, and its up to you to find replacement limbs and then crawl/hobble/run away from the camp when no one is looking

Pichu0102,
@Pichu0102@kbin.social avatar

Huh, is there an option for being immortal in Kenshi but in the "you are immortal but not invincible" way, so characters never die but they still need someone to come along to save them and fix them up before they can move again? I used to simulate this in Rimworld with the bleeding out mod that kept pawns from dying upon losing most vital organs for a very short time combined with a mod that made them regenerate lost parts at 10% efficiency until it fully regenerated, leaving them unable to do anything but still alive until recovery.

Caligvla,
@Caligvla@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

No. But it’s actually kind of hard to straight up die in Kenshi, most of the time you’re just knocked unconscious for a while, sometimes you enter a coma while you heal back up and that can be dangerous as wild animals or slavers might find you and if you’re bleeding out that could be a death sentence. The only real way to just straight up die is to get beat up so hard you get fatally wounded on either your torso or head, but that’s incredibly rare.

How about Spookie’s House of Jumpscares?

At least I think that’s what it’s called?

CharlesReed,

I second this one. It's pretty straight forward, and just as the name suggests, is filled with jumpscares.
