Motortown: Behind the Wheel. The driving feels fantastic, it has just the right amount of RP-ability to be present, but not forced, and it can be high speed or high chill, your choice. I seriously recommend it.

FeelzGoodMan420, do games w Are mods usually confusing as hell or am I just an idiot?

To be fair, Mass Effect has one of the most convoluted modding processes and dogshit communities of all time. Other games are easier lol.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

I was doing it for the Legendary edition to be fair. I dunno if that makes a difference at all. I ended up just sticking with a couple of basic community patches, staying in casual outfits on the Citadel and such in ME1, and upscaled cutscenes. Anything more than that was just way too fuckin confusing.

Oh and adding back the same sex romance options in ME1 and 2. I had no idea that was an option but my gay ass is super happy to be able to romance Kaiden throughout all 3 games now. Time for a break from Cortez, my beloved.

FeelzGoodMan420,

Haha awesome! Actually i was referring t9 the original trilogy being terrible to mod. I’m not sure about the legendary edition.

Some games lend themselves better to modding. Some are much more complicated to mod. Some games need a mod manager to do conflict checks and some games can just have mods piled on top of each other endlessly without issues.

Mods within certain game engines can pretty much be moved between games ofln the same engine often with very little adjustment.

I would say in modern modding it is usually fairly straightforward, but some games and some older mods definitely require some deep computer fuckery.

Stick to things you’re comfortable with and skip the ones you aren’t.

SgtAStrawberry,

It also depends where you get the mod from as different sites offers different amount of help. On some sites you need to download, un zip, drag and drop files in different places and change files both in the mod and outside it, and other sites you just press a button and your good to go. Even when it is the same or similar mods.

Rogue, do games w Are mods usually confusing as hell or am I just an idiot?

I decided to not even bother with a significant number of mods because they just seemed mind numbingly confusing to set up.

I’m not complaining, I’m just wondering if I’m missing some trick or something.

I think you made the right choice here.

There’s no quality control in modding communities so I’d say the effort the developer puts into the install instructions is going to be a reasonable indicator of the quality of the mod itself.

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

Well the one that I was thinking of specifically in that moment came with a wiki and a youtube guide on how to set it. I just balked. Like some fuckery sure, but that is just obscene.

I played a bit of FFVII rebirth at the start of the week, but then had to pause I don’t have my main pc with me and I doubt it plays well on deck. I’m not sure if I wanna continue it tho, as my overall experience with the game up to now (middle of Costa del Sol) has been pretty bad.

I started Granblue Fantasy Relink, I think I’m near the end of the story mode. It’s pretty fun, although I wish the story too was coop.

I’m also playing Fire Emblem Engage (chapter 14), and it’s much better than Awakening: the maps are more interesting and the break system encourages you to be aggressive and makes using weaker units easier. The engage rings are pretty interesting; they feel a bit overpowered, but at the same time I feel like I’m not using them optimally.

I’m also playing the game, it’s kinda disappointing, since I loved Remake, but I like the characters enough to continue.

_Lory98_,

Remake is great, I replayed it recently too in anticipation for Rebirth.

I too like the characters, which is why I’ll try to continue, but I’m probably gonna play the original game instead. I’ve already played around 20 hours of it, up to just after the

spoiler for a dungeon I'm guessing is near the end of Rebirthtemple of the ancients

, and while the fast pacing is a bit jarring when compared to Remake, I enjoyed it much more than the parts of Rebirth I played.

Poopfeast420,
@Poopfeast420@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I’m definitely not as down on Rebirth as you, but I liked Remake more. The combat is still fun enough, even if some fights/enemies are terrible.

I’ve also been thinking of re-playing the original, when I’m done, just as I’ve done after Remake. Like you said, I remember the pace throwing me for a loop.

Guilty. I have half a bookcase of legacy PC games

dan1101, do gaming w What video game franchises do you not need to start from the very beginning to enjoy? What would you recommend as the entry point into your favorite series?

Forza Horizon lol

Also Far Cry. No story connection between the games although there is one minor recurring character.

XeroxCool,

I’ve played Far Cry 2 through most of 6. If you don’t recognize particular references, there’s nothing that makes them substantial otherwise in the sea of creative, humorous descriptions of everyone/everything else.

I would say it’s similar with assassin’s creed, keeping it in the family of “ubisoft series gamers love to shit on”. The references are in the same style as other database entries, so you’re not missing anything if you’re unfamiliar. I’ve played 4 through Odyssey.

I’m trying to think of other series and keep landing on the same reasoning, actually. Yeah, I love having more basis for the lore in other series, but I don’t feel I’m missing much without every reference. I mean, Ace Combat was my personality for a few months when 7 came out, prompting me to replay 4 and 5 and buy Zero and 6. As others have said, the main thing is if you do choose to go backwards, things get clunky for both general game and specific series development reasons. Assin 4 was my most recent AC (tried 3, beat Unity>Ody, then beat 4) and man, parkour is tough. I gave up on 3 because it was so awkward and I was too old to learn at the elder age of like 23.

I gotta say though, Forza Horizon 1 remains my favorite. There’s certainly some nostalgia tied to it because it set me up for impossible expectations in the car community (especially now in the post-covid takeover bullshit). It had a more concise campaign and had some story attached to it. I’m up to 4 and it just drops me in like “this is just what you do now” and every race unlocks 4 more races with no end in sight.

Isn’t New Dawn a sequel to Far Cry 5?

dan1101,

Yes, you got me there. Forgot about New Dawn even though I finally played it for the first time a couple months ago.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I feel like I recall a lot of people saying it was kind of forgettable though I might be thinking about Far Cry 6.

What did you think of it?

dan1101,

I put it off for a long time but I enjoyed it co-op. It was relatively short, the antagonists weren’t that compelling or even very present in the story, but I felt like it was greater than the sum of it’s parts and I enjoyed re-visiting Far Cry 5 locations with post-apocalypse appearances. Like “Hey, here is the island where you started FC5” and “Hey, here is the gas station at the rural intersection where you had to steal the truck.”

Nearing the end of the non-DLC portion of Pokemon Scarlet. I’m trying to finish my Pokedex before I jump to the DLC here and just have a little bit more focused breeding/leveling up the babies before I’m all set. I forgot how much fun a mainline Pokemon game is as it’s taken up a lot of free time as I get towards the end. I do think this has been one of the better entries and the technical issues, while present, are nowhere near game breaking from what I’ve experienced.

The open world was a little daunting at first. They give you three “quest lines” you can follow right out of the gate and I was initially stuck trying to figure out where to go and what to do, especially since two of the quest lines are literally in two different directions. The region is basically a big circle/clock face. You start at 6:00 and the first things you can do when the game opens up are at 4:00 and 8:00. Once I got the hang of the travel down it was a lot easier to do, but they throw a lot at you to start.

Brumefey, do games w Got Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (retail, PS5) early, AMA

I kind of don’t (yet) get the stealth / thievery mechanics. I broke into a place, stole something for a quest, and although not getting any indication of someone noticing me, I got a ridiculously high bounty.

That’s the kind of things I disliked in the first game. You kill a thieve in the middle of a forest and still get bad reputation…

You’re not missing anything. Heavy modding of older games PC can be a pain in the ass.

You can usually find a somewhat coherent and structured guide that will give you a step by step process, but will still be time-consuming (and there will likely be exceptions or outdated information).

The best option is to keep mods to minimum unless you know what you are doing and it’s a game that you play on a permanent basis.

Die4Ever,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

Heavy modding of older games PC can be a pain in the ass.

Sometimes the older games are the easy ones to mod, and the new games make it intentionally difficult. Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Deus Ex are all mod-friendly.

It can also depend on how much work the mod developer puts into making it easy.

(I notice you have an MiB as your profile pic and Deus Ex’s Liberty Island skybox as your profile banner lol)

Stamets,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

I was so confused for so long here. I forgot that Men in Black were in Deus Ex. I was just like “How the hell does Tommy Lee Jones connect with this?!”

hisao,

Doom … mod-friendly

If it’s non-standard engine (“sourceport” in Doom terminology) with its own scripting infrastructure (like GZDoom) then sure. Vanilla and Boom compatible engines are kinda tricky, DeHackEd isn’t exactly the easiest modding approach. Mapping-friendly - for sure, but modding - less so.

snugglesthefalse,

Yeah, the main reason doom can be considered more friendly is because the whole engine’s been taken apart and rebuilt by half the game industry by now

TootSweet, do games w Are mods usually confusing as hell or am I just an idiot?

Most games were never made to be modded. The communities are hacking mods into these games, many of which were even designed to make modding harder. (Because mods compete against sequels or something? I dunno. Intellectual property is a mental illness.) It’s not terribly surprising that games that weren’t meant to be modded have confusingly inconsistent methods for loading mods. Because those mods work fundamentally differently from game to game. If a mod happens to be easy-ish to install, chances are it’s either quite a simple mod (a model/texture replacement or some such, or just something that’s not terribly hard to mod) or a lot of work has been put into making it easier.

Die4Ever,
@Die4Ever@programming.dev avatar

(Because mods compete against sequels or something?

yea sequels, expansion packs, and DLC

snugglesthefalse,

It’s more that most games aren’t made with consideration for modding, this means you can have core gameplay elements hidden in encrypted packages and modding is limited by what you can actually get access to. Sometimes the devs/publishers will actively make mods harder though. Really depends on the game, the company, how determined people are to mod it, how long the game’s been out for, the engine and probably a bunch else that I haven’t thought of right now.

kipo,

Also the timeline usually matters. Mod methods can change as game patches are released. Mods can have mod patches. Mods can be deprecated for new mods or mod methods. Mods can have other dependencies. Install order sometimes matters.

I think OP is right; mods can be messy, complicated, and a lot of work.
