Finally decided to play Outer Wilds.

Wonderful game! Changed my view of the world and outlook on the purpose of life for the better

Fantastic game. So we’ll written, designed, and artistically styled. I was blown away.

It really does have the strength to do that to so many people that play it. It’s stuck with me for years and not a week goes by that I don’t think about it.

Seconding 8bitdo.

Very satisfied with mine. Not the ultimate, but the SN30 Pro+. Has no issues connecting to my PC or switch, no mechanical issues so far either, after about 4 years.

@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Aunty Ethel’s lair is a non-rest area in act 1. And I think there’s also one in the Githyanki crèche. And short rests are allowed. And by that time I usually have a few of those potions that are essentially a long rest. Or a short rest with benefits. And there’s a restoration pod in the mindflayer colony.

The minimap turns red when entering restricted rest areas, hard to miss.

flashgnash,

Hard to miss if you know what it actually means

BmeBenji, do gaming w With the year coming to an end, what was your favorite video game you played this year?

Deathloop. I put it off for so long because so many people said “if you’re coming here looking for another Dishonored or Prey, you’ll be disappointed because the story and immersive sim elements are far more shallow” BUT HOLY HELL Deathloop is the most unique AAA game on the market. The metagame is amazing in that while the moment-to-moment gameplay is FPS/action-style, the game as a whole is really a puzzle for the player to solve through exploration and discovery. Fuck me it works so damn well.

Who the hell am I? How did I wake up on this island? Who’s yelling in my ear all the time? Why do I wake up on this beach every morning even if I die? The game makes you ask questions and doesn’t let you leave them unanswered.

The icing on the cake is the amazing combat with cool guns and amazingly fun supernatural powers. I may be in the minority but I also love the way that the invasion PvP mode works. It adds a really nice difficulty jump when the game might start feeling too easy. The only two complaints I have are that the multiplayer networking experience is definitely subpar with a lot of lag, and that the game holds your hand too much at the end. It shouldn’t give you objective markers telling you how to actually go about solving the puzzle, it should force you to figure it out and implement it on your own.

birthday_attack,

Hard agree with all of this. I’ve never been good at shooters, especially PvP, but the invasions always felt like more of a chess match than a true gun duel. Outsmarting some human player who’s a better shot than me made for super memorable and satisfying moments.

I’ll also add that the voice acting and dialogue were great. Dishonored is infamous for having limited voice lines (“shall we meet for whiskey and cigars tonight?”), and in a game with a time loop mechanic and limited maps, I thought for sure it would be even worse. But I was pleasantly surprised. It’s still annoying for scripted events that repeat, but the Colt and Julianna banter kind of made up for it imo

BmeBenji,

Oh absolutely. The PvP was really about outsmarting (just like the rest of the game, nice cohesion) and sometimes boiled down to tense gun fights. Even then you could rely more on the slabs than the guns if you wanted.

The banter also really adds to the game. Reminds me of Evolve and how the varied character conversations and banter helped keep the matches from feeling extremely repetitive.

ducking_donuts, do gaming w Long rest prevented areas in BG3

I think the minimap gets colored in red in such areas but I agree a better indicator or a hint could be nice.

In case of moonrise towers, if you just cross the bridge back to town you can long rest there and come back.

flashgnash,

After moonrise towersWe’re in the illithid lair now, considering we jumped down a hole to get here I doubt we’ll be able to get out

Dangerhart,

I can’t remember if I reloaded a previous save or fast traveled out of there, but there is a way to heal down there I believe

flashgnash,

Ganbat, do games w What's up with Epic Games?

Well, I have four big ones:

  • System scanning: EGS is known to automatically scan your system and send your data back to them. While this seems to be the same type of analytics Steam does occasionally, in Steam’s case, it’s opt-in, and done with full, informed consent.
  • Paid exclusives: Epic has been known to pay publishers to make their games artificially exclusive to their own store. They regularly claim this money is to support the development of the games in question, but this is easily disproven, as they’ve been seen buying games known to be complete more than once. Additionally, this has resulted in bait-and-switch-like situations, where users would prepurchase Steam copies of games, only to be informed that they wouldn’t be getting them.
  • Publisher-centric behavior: Another user here claimed that EGS is pro-developer and anti-consumer, but this is only half true. This only rings true in the case of self-published games. There have been cases of developers getting unwarranted backlash after aforementioned bait-and-switches, when they were just as surprised to learn about all the “development support” they received as anyone.
  • Tim Sweeney: Tim Weeney, the CEO of Epic, is an asshole. A giant, narcissistic, hateful shitbag. Just look at his Twitter, the dudes a giant POS.
lud,

Additionally, this has resulted in bait-and-switch-like situations, where users would prepurchase Steam copies of games, only to be informed that they wouldn’t be getting them.

I didn’t know about this.

It happened to Metro Exodus (great game btw) but iirc all pre orders were honoured and the game was just delisted.

Has it happened after that?

vsh,

It’s mostly owned by tencent (CCP company). I don’t remember how much but I think it was about 40%

@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Ever since Super Mario Bros. 3 it’s confirmed that it’s all a stage play and repeated over and over again, so it’s not been a one-off. They play the same or similar roles in otherwise disconnected plays / movies.

Super Mario Bros 3: Curtain raises and the levels are just stage sets. www.youtube.com/watch?v=seZM0HHPIdo

Super Mario All-Stars: The gang hangs around at a party www.youtube.com/watch?v=tySdQ1l_hGM

Paper Mario: Same curtain thing going on as in SMB3 and at battles you can even see the audience www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmUtCTtFA4U

all-knight-party,
@all-knight-party@kbin.run avatar

Doesn't that only confirm that it's a play in the games where the visuals explicitly show that it's a play? Beyond that Mario games don't seem to clearly be in any sort of fictional medium context at all, just because SMB3 was a play doesn't automatically mean Super Mario Sunshine is also a play or a movie, at that point that's just the characters' lives.

I actually find it funny trying to make any sense of Mario mythos at all. The characters are endearing placeholders for protagonists and enemies and create an easy design language to use for a game, but there's not really a consistent lore, the closest we've come to this whole sort of idea being legitimatized is how Nintendo has handled Zelda.

They could eventually try to create a Mario canon, but I think it's a bit too silly of a franchise to try to seriously do that with, the characters and world just bend to fit whatever works best on a per-game basis, for tone and mechanical reasons more than anything else, whether that's a play or ostensibly real characters in their regular lives.

Stillhart, do gaming w PC CD-ROM games at the hotel I stayed at

Did you check if the games were actually in there or if they were just boxes?

hulemy,

No, I didn’t touch the boxes, was to scared to disturb them 😅 Some were sealed in plastic too, just thought it looked really cool as decoration in a quite old timey looking hotel.

aeronmelon, do games w Has Bowser finally turned good and gave up on hunting Peach?

From an in-universe perspective, it is believed by some that Bowser’s actions are not out of hatred, but that he just wants attention. So Bowser never actually hurts Peach and Mario never actually kills Bowser.

Which is why they’re willing to play sporting events together and why Bowser will begrudgingly work with Mario when his luck is down (Rabbids, Mario RPG).

Marsupial,
@Marsupial@quokk.au avatar

Mario, Bowser, and Peach are playing pretend wars over nothing, whilst hanging out every other weekend.

Meanwhile thousands of Goomba, Koopas, Shyguys, et al. die in these senseless acts of violence to sate the twisted desires of the rulers.

I sense it’s time for revolution.

aeronmelon,

Troopa Uprising would be a cool idea for a Mario game. Instead of fighting Bowser, Mario has to keep him safe from his lieutenants who represent and command each of the species in Bowser’s army.

The plot twist would be that Mario then has to protect Peach from a Toadstool uprising for the same reason.

Stovetop,

Funny idea, but I feel like a game about the political elite crushing a revolution of the people isn’t something that would ring well with a lot of folks, haha.

NuXCOM_90Percent,

It gets better

In Sunshine, Peach was genuinely confused as to whether she was actually baby bowser’s mom. The only way that happens is if you fuck on the regular and do a LOT of drugs

So not only are they sacrificing more troops than a PS3-era musou on the reg, they are doing it to play act some REALLY kinky sex fantasies.

TORFdot0,

Mario straight up kills bowser toward the end of New Super Mario Bros before being revived by a spell from Bowser Jr.

That’s where “Dry Bowser” comes from

darthelmet, do games w What's up with Epic Games?

They do the same thing that the horde of shitty streaming services do: Hold content hostage through exclusivity deals so they can gain market share without actually providing a comparable technology or service as their competitor.

hh93,

The problem is that without those exclusive deals noone would change

Most people didn’t buy EA games at origin or Ubisoft games at UPlay even though you needed those launchers anyway. They even didn’t buy CDProjekt games at gog despite the games being dem free there.

Excluding deals on sought after games is literally the only way to get a majority of the players moving away from there comfortable “I have ally games and friends there already” position

People are lazy and hate change - without force it’s not going to happen

darthelmet,

They don’t even try to be competitive on technology or service though. If they were making a comparable or even superior product and people were sticking with Steam anyway for the network effect I’d agree they’d be justified in doing more to attract customers. But they just want to use their pile of money to buy their way into a market without putting in the work to design and develop a superior product.
