There are surprisingly many great 3D platformers coming out atm. Last year we had Pseudoregalia, Cavern of Dreams and Corn Kidz 64. This year we’ve had Penny’s Big Breakaway and The Big Catch: Tacklebox, which itself is a free demo/prologue chapter for The Big Catch, coming out next year (and is also my most hotly anticipated upcoming game, even more so than Hollow Knight Silksong. I mean just look at that trailer and tell me the vibes aren’t peak!).

It’s a good time to be a fan of 3D platformers.

strongarm, (edited ) do gaming w Let's discuss: Platformers

Love playformers platformers especially 2D, although Astro’s Playhouse was a favourite too, but mostly for the creativity with the controller.

For 2D I particularly liked the Ori games, so much love in the design of those games and the gameplay yo match

knokelmaat,

If you are in any way able to get your hands on Astro Bot, I recommend it sooooo much. Even at it’s steep price, it’s already worth it for me (30 percent completed).

And you can always use my strategy, buy second hand with the ability to sell again when you’re finished. I know this does not support the developer, but when money is tight (as is kind of the case for me) I think this doesn’t matter.

Kissaki,

playformers

You mean platformers, right? Or is playformers a term?

strongarm,

Hah yes, thanks

Kissaki, do gaming w Let's discuss: Platformers

For me, great platformers have fluid and responsive controls, and either implement a forgiving persisting experience (climbing the environment) or quick and not too far-off resets (level screens).

Platforming can be great in pure platformers, action platformers, 2d or 3d. They may shift but do not limit how stories can be told and how worlds or progression can be designed.

I imagine it can be difficult to balance forgiving platforming with challenges between novice and experienced players. Often, we see alternative or stretch-goal paths for collectibles or challenges, which is a good approach to serve both kinds of players - even if maybe not total novices.

Introducing game mechanics step by step can give good introductions and learning controls, preferably in-game without dialogue, popups, or text-only introductions. They can guide into a natural level and mechanics design progression, giving a natural progression across longer gameplay.

WTF is Mascot Platformers? Is it just platformers? If so megaman zero is still hands down the best series

knokelmaat,

I edited the post to just platformers, as it was indeed a bit vague! Though I think I was going more for the run-around, collect and jump on enemies kind of deal (Mario, Donkey Kong, Crash Bandicoot, Astro Bot, Banjo-Kazooie, etc).

So less action-platform I guess?

But what do you like about megaman? I’ve never played any game in that series!

termus,
@termus@beehaw.org avatar

I’m sad Little Big Planet doesn’t get this love anymore. The first two games were fantastic platformers.

knokelmaat,

Thanks for reminding me! Those games were amazing and actually quite similar to Astro Bot in vibe: just wholesome, cute and positive all around!

I didn’t enjoy 3 that much, and the new Sackboy game is fun but seems like a different genre almost.

I did really like the PSP and PSVita entries of LBP, if you have access to those devices you should give them a go! Even though they weren’t made by the same team, they really captured the essence and both had a great campaign!

Sidenote, do you remember the millions of Shark Attack community levels? That was such a weird trend :).

lowleveldata,

I don’t hate Megaman but Megaman Zero is the best. You get to be the legendary robot hero and cut bad guys in half with a light saber. Also the characters are interesting and the music are too good for a GBA game.

    Speaking of megaman please do me a favour and try battle network.

    knokelmaat,

    I’m currently downloading Mega Man Legacy Collection on my 2DS. Any tips for a complete newcomer to the series? I know that you have different stages, each with a different boss, and that you are allowed to do them in any order. You receive powerups from the bosses you’ve defeated right?

    Maybe a recommended order for the first game?

    Thanks for the suggestion!

    technomad,

    Sounds like you’re (mostly) talking about ‘collectathons.’

    in about 201X I was having a terrible time trying to get through the thesis period of a master’s program

    picked up some bundle of the OG 2DS (black & blue variant) and Pokemon X and loved it

    a world where I could pick my friends, people were pleasant, my next career moves were obvious, and my work was rewarded? To this day, this is my escapist fantasy.

    LassCalibur, (edited ) do gaming w Let's discuss: Uplifting Games

    Actually playing games during dire emotional states throws fuel unto my dissociation/depersonalization/derealization problems; but just mindfully sitting in my favorite place in the Temple of the Moon on a private vanilla WoW server works great for me. The sounds, music, colors, lighting effects, and water create a very zen space that helps me observe my thoughts and feelings without getting so tangled up in them. That kind of presence helps me better understand what is really going on and how it all happened.

    If things are merely bad then maybe I’ll play some original Sims 1 or Rimworld on the coziest of settings. So long as there’s no nest of trash around then it’s probably okay. Eufloria in relaxed mode is a lovely RTS game that hasn’t ever caused me any problems.

    Hopefully you find your way through this soon!

    SuperSaiyanSwag, do gaming w Let's discuss: Uplifting Games

    Wandersong: that game has so much character, it’s insane. The game can feel very emotional without heavy themes, idk how it did it.

    I see a bunch of mentions of Journey. Recently, I’ve been playing Sky: Children of the Light for the first time, which is made by the same devs. It is beautiful, and feels like a spiritual successor to Journey, to me. It is also free to play, so it is easy to recommend trying it out.

    DdCno1,

    What’s the monetization like?

    blindsight,

    I just read the top review on Steam and it answered this question well: TL;DR it’s a shame this is a F2P game since the seasonal cosmetic FOMO is diametrically opposed to the message/spirit of the game, but if you can ignore the cosmetics, then it’s a fantastic experience that’s completely free.

    HER0,
    @HER0@beehaw.org avatar

    Seems like it is just some cosmetics? Seems like many items you get by interacting with NPCs and others are somehow paid, but I haven’t looked at how that works.

    ooblets is one of my favorite in this genre. it’s got a great soundtrack, the humor is spot-on, and it’s got an anti-capitalist message.

    GammaGames, (edited )

    Love Ooblets! The dance battles are a fun little replacement for regular creature collecting fights, and they also scratch that deckbuilder itch.

    It would be rad af if you could not only run Doom off of one of these (because they already run on Windows so it’s probably easy as hell to run Doom on it), but also somehow get the scanner part to use its laser to make one of those holographic keyboards to actually play Doom on it without any external devices.

    amju_wolf,
    @amju_wolf@pawb.social avatar

    Considering those scanners usually register as keyboards and just do a dumb input “typing” it shouldn’t even be hard, lol.

    The worst part would probably be picking a barcode scheme where the inputs make sense…

    Coelacanth, do gaming w Let's discuss: Final Fantasy
    @Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

    What I love about the series is that there are so many varied entries that everyone can find their own favourite, consensus be dammed.

    I’ll always consider VI the absolute peak Final Fantasy - beautiful pixel art, Active Time Battles, SNES Mode 7, brilliant score, a fantastic story with a memorable villain and a large and varied ensemble cast of great characters… It has it all for me.

    I also have to somewhat ashamedly admit that for whatever reason I actually have some fondness for XV. I’ve posted about it before but I have such a hard time succinctly putting my feelings about it into words, because it is by no means a good game. It’s probably the biggest discrepancy I’ve experienced between the objective quality of a game and how much I enjoyed playing it. Whether it’s the stellar fishing mini game or the random wholesome interactions between the gang and the overall bro trip vibe I don’t know but there is something there. And the score is no Uematsu perhaps but I really enjoyed it and thought they did some wonderful leitmotif work.

    SteposVenzny,

    Yoko Shimomura is actually my favorite JRPG composer. She did Kingdom Hearts, Mario RPG/& Luigi, and Radiant Historia before this game.

    Her combat music always stands out to me in particular for being emotionally unconventional. Everybody else makes a battle theme and all that’s on their minds to convey is “cool and/or scary that violence is happening, throw in some grandiosity if it’s a big one” but she’ll do stuff like “the enemy is the panicked one here; they’re trying to front like they’re badass but actually I weep for them” or “you are losing a nonverbal rap battle.”

    XV actually let me down a bit in that specific regard but the soundtrack as a whole is very solid.

    Coelacanth,
    @Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

    Yeah it’s funny now that you mention it but I don’t really remember the battle music if XV all that well. But I have stuff like Valse di Fantastica/Sunset Walz/Dewdrops at Dawn and Ardyn’s themes seared into my brain.

    Ashen44, do gaming w Let's discuss: Final Fantasy

    I’m a real youngster here, so my first final fantasy game was 16, but I really loved it so I picked up 14 and 7 remake. I never really got into 14 because MMOs, but 7 was an absolute blast! I’ve got rebirth and 16 lined up, but lately I’ve been getting more and more into retro RPGs so I’ve been considering going back and playing some of the older titles. I’ve heard tons of good things about 6, but I wonder if anyone else has any recommendations?

    aStonedSanta,

    I really loved the original FVII. And FFIX and FFX. The older you go back the more boring the battle mechanics imo.

    stardust, do gaming w Let's discuss: Visual Novels

    I’ve played the Steins;Gate ones and DDLC. I like that it’s relaxing when I don’t feel like doing something super interactive and the branching paths when it comes to story is cool. I picked up Chaos;Head Noah which I haven’t started yet but look forward to getting into the other visual novels in to SciADV series.

    Steam Deck has been how I’ve read them, and it’s been great with the suspend feature making it book like in getting into it and out of it convenient.

    JakenVeina, do gaming w Let's discuss: Hollow Knight

    First game I ever played where I was like “yo, I actively WANT to do the speedrun achievement, and the deathless achievement.” So, first game where I ever did those things. Maybe I’m just crazy, but I found them way easier than I expected.

    Also, a prime example of storytelling through music.
