superkret, do gaming w Ubisoft is being sued over The Crew in a lawsuit that compares the server shutdown to a bumperless pinball machine

The analogy makes no sense.
Your pinball machine keeps working until it breaks, relying only on electricity you provide.
A server-based computer game relies on running it on a server you aren’t paying the upkeep on.

If you buy a game that relies on servers that don’t belong to you, you should expect this to be a temporary lease, not something you can expect to use forever.
Of course, the language in the store’s UI needs to match that. You can’t “buy” a server-reliant game.

Veritrax,

The analogy makes perfect sense if it manages to effectively communicate the issue to a judge or jury in a way they understand.

kryptonidas,

With games people used to setup their own servers. (And we liked it that way. Way more sense of a community.) So that could be an option. Allow people to run their own servers again.

FooBarrington,

What you say makes sense for a multiplayer-only game! But the game has a full single player campaign. There is no technical reason to remove access to that part. That part can be kept working without incurring recurring costs.

Whatever the result in, I wish there won’t be over-moderation that too Western-centric.

Not all swastika are Nazi (I live in a country where swastika is simply symbol of religion and peacefulness). Not all words that too similar with offending word in English are bad (some games literally banned Indonesian for having “nasi goreng” as their name, too similiar with Nazi they said.)

UKFilmNerd, do games w Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024's launch has been marred by long load times, server issues and now it has overwhelmingly negative reviews
@UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk avatar

I was surprised at the long load time initially and had a quick fly of an A10 warthog from a local small airfield.

This was on my Xbox Series S and it was a bit stuttery in places. It’s clearly not meant for this console. This is for the pcs with big GPUs.

Retro_unlimited, do games w Nightingale's Realms Rebuilt update arrives tomorrow and aims to revive the game with a handcrafted campaign

When the game came out it had a free weekend. I tried it. I started to make a base in the place I spawned in, then I had no idea what to do next lol

Chickenstalker, do games w Peter Molyneux thinks generative AI is the future of games, all but guaranteeing that it won't be

It might replace the dumb AI we see in strategy games. You know, the one that suddenly nukes your cities after signing a peace treaty.

Zagorath,

I doubt it. Other forms of AI could be useful, but generative AI? I doubt it.

And tbh even deep learning through neural networks doesn’t seem to be making the leaps we’d hoped for. AoE4 promised, prior to release, a machine learning–based AI would be delivered down the line. It’s now almost 3 years since release and we haven’t heard a thing about it.

Maybe eventually we’ll be able to easily train a machine learning algorithm to play any game at a wide variety of skill levels (or at a very high level, if not at customisable levels), but it doesn’t seem like it’s any time soon.

The funny thing is the article could have been improved with AI, fixing the spelling mistakes for example.

assassin_aragorn, do games w Elden Ring is "the limit" for From Software project scale, says Miyazaki - multiple, "smaller" games may be the "next stage"

Good! Elden Ring felt too large at times, especially some DLC areas. Where I had the most fun was contained dungeons and castles. I think that’s really where their level design shines best.

bob_lemon, do gaming w Beta Decay is a low-poly dystopian RPG whose grimy cover-shooting shows promise

a big open world planet with a dense series of dystopian cities, alongside underground resource-rich zones.

That is stupidly overambitious and will necessarily lead to a lack of detail and charm.
