We had the coin op at the local movie theater. Didn’t play much as a quarter was real money and I lost so quickly.

Anyone remember the vector graphics Star Wars game? Man, if I could have any vintage game in my house…

Oh man, Battlezone: the Red Odyssey was one of my first true gaming moments and I loved it so much. It was my most favorite game for a very long time. It was believed for a while thar the source code got lost and it therefore wouldn’t become available as DLC for Battlezone 98 Redux, but I guess the developers either found it or remade it from scratch since DLC has been available for some time now.

I bought Battlezone 1 some time after experiencing Red Odyssey and I was sure it had background music though. It was one of the very few boxed games I bought and remembered it had an awesome looking manual. In 1999, Battlezone II: Combat Commander was released and I don’t think it had a story but only a skirmish RTS/FPS mode. I didn’t like it that much.

Battlezone Gold Edition (2017) has nothing to with the above series I think, and seems more like a spinoff of the 1980’s Battlezone. I’ve seen this game once before but totally forgot it existed until seeing it now. Battlezone Combat Commander (2018) is a remake of Battlezone II (1999).

On a slightly different note, around the same time, Machines made by Acclaim got released which was an RTS where you could control any unit as an FPS. The name is quite unfortunate since Googling information about it is difficult. If you like Battlezone then then you might like this one as well.https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/6f5029be-f8ec-4694-9c8f-d7bdc0a659aa.webp

ExtraMedicated, (edited ) do games w I make games and this literally happened to me this morning

Happens to me almost every month. Good thing I didn’t quit my day job.

ByteOnBikes,

Out of curiosity, have you had some big pay days? Or just enough to treat yourself?

ExtraMedicated,

I don’t think I ever got more than $200 in a month. But I keep the money in a separate account and only use it for game dev or business stuff.

NotMyOldRedditName, do games w I make games and this literally happened to me this morning

I’ve had Google charge me $0.01 before for firebase usage.

They really should have waited until I owed more since that cost them money.

rainman,

Once a month I’d have to pay a few pennies to Google for our cloud use at a school district I worked for. It always baffled me!

NotMyOldRedditName,

They should almost just make it so the blaze plan of firebase or other cloud services has a $1 non refundable pre-payment so they can just whittle away at the pennies instead of getting charged processing/transaction fees on a $0.01 transaction. Tops up to $1 if it goes to $0

I think people would pay $1 to enable the paid plans. If you’re going that far, you’re getting $1 of use out of it.

ByteOnBikes,

On my personal AWS account, Im paying them 0.17 cents a month.

I wonder if they pay a fee.

NotMyOldRedditName,

They’re bigger so it’s hard to know, but it’s usually something like 2.9% + 10c a transaction.

At their scale though who knows

szczuroarturo,

Only in us tho. I think eu has it set to percantage only.

SkaveRat,

Nope. Just depends on the processor

boonhet,

This might’ve changed but 10 years ago the small shop next to my school said they wouldn’t allow card payments of under 1 EUR because they’d be losing money. In Estonia

kamen,

0.17 cents

So is that less than a cent or is it 17 cents? If it’s the former, I don’t think it’s even possible to make a transaction that small.

Obligatory mention of Viva New Vegas modlist for someone that gets the itch to play for the first time. It makes the game run like a dream, and if you want to add some QoL there is a section for that too. Everything well explained and easy to install.

Combat commander is where its at!!! Afaik Battlezone 98 had a second game, Combat Commander, it has an amazing single player game and the version on steam is a remaster.

Many mods, many missions, if you enjoyed 98 I think you’ll love Combat Commander.

So many nights as a young kid switching between vehicles, having not a clue what I was doing

Talky Toaster really didn’t cope well with everyone being dead.

Though wasn’t it the antagonist in one of the book versions?

He really didn’t cope well when I broke the news to him about the nuclear fallout. I backpedaled and lied to him when I started to feel bad for him.

In the first mission of Battlezone, it’s possible to travel out of the map and find a 1960s lunar lander that you can enter and pilot. It’s equipped with a one of a kind super weapon that plays trance music as you fire it.

Unfortunately it’s only available in the first mission and you can’t take it with you to subsequent missions.

Thanks for sharing!

It’s always cool to hear other people’s journeys through games. It was makes the medium so special.

How was performance on the Steam Deck? New Vegas has a long history of bugs/crashes and your post makes me want to reinstall.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Performance wise I can get about 3.5 Hours out of it on Medium Settings, Refresh Rate 40hz, TDP set to 10, and clock speed at 1000.

Big wise I’ve had a few bugs, nothing too major and I suspect it was just New Vegas being New Vegas (except for one I had where VATS would crash the game. I had to repair the filesystem for that)

7112,

Thanks. Reinstalling now!

@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

If you’re worried about bugs I think you should be able to get Mod Organizer 2 running on Steam Deck, and with all the various stability mods installed New Vegas runs fairly well. The Viva New Vegas mod guide is a great place to start, it should have most of what you need to get going.

Lonesome Road is such a great, atmospheric journey. My only problem with it is Ulysses never stops talking!

MyNameIsAtticus,

I enjoyed his conversations, but I can get why people may find it annoying. He jumps in so much. And a couple of times it was right before combat too so afterwards you were flung straight into combat.

Just a correction: the sequel was released in 1999 as Battlezone 2: Combat Commander. It was a AAA release and picked up the original alternate history storyline 30 years after the events of the first game, with all Earth-based factions now forming an official alliance and fighting a new common threat. It was insanely cool for a teenager back then.

While the sequel was technically far superior, I did miss the cold war tone of US vs Soviet conflict that was present in the first game.

I also loved the interpretation of Greek mythology through the “ancient aliens” lens (Hercules Brigade and all the other stuff, quite along the lines of what Stargate SG1 was doing at the time) that was revealed to you through briefings and pre-mission voiceovers. I think this was also more pronounced in the first game.
