MrScottyTay, do games w The big Portal 2 mod Portal: Revolution is out now on Steam

Saw the trailer on YouTube but it was shit. Instead of telling me what it is it just shows a few corridors? Like it’s it just a walking simulator in portal? If not, then why that trailer.

Sixpix,

Well, you could watch the trailer instead of the announcement video of it being available.

MrScottyTay,

I mean I didn’t seek it out, it was the first thing that ever appeared to me about the mod. Just saying, not a great first impression.

yamanii,
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a shame that modders don’t have marketing teams, maybe read the steam page?

MrScottyTay,

I don’t think you need a team to figure out what makes a good first impression for a game. Especially if you are a gamer yourself and see a lot of trailers for other games. I know I could look elsewhere for more info I’m just saying that the video got such a buzz that it started to pop up in feeds without any context. It does nothing to make anyone want to look elsewhere for that info.

LaserTurboShark69, do games w The big Portal 2 mod Portal: Revolution is out now on Steam

My brain is still reforming after trying to play Portal Reloaded

TheHobbyist,

I just replayed the 1 and 2 recently, love’em. Is reloaded bad?

simple,

Not bad at all, it’s really great. It just gets very difficult in the 2nd half. A lot harder than the original games.

LaserTurboShark69,

You know how your brain kinda has to shift gears in order to “get” portal for the first time? Trying to “get” Reloaded was like rebuilding the whole damn gear system for me.

Sabin10,

If you managed to play through reloaded, revolution will be a wall in the park. I played through it yesterday and it’s great.

optissima,
@optissima@lemmy.world avatar

How tall is the wall? Climbable?

Sabin10,

It’s no more difficult that portal 2 was IMO.

ringwraithfish, do games w MSI teasing a handheld gaming PC like the Steam Deck

No doubt it will be another handheld running Windows though instead of Linux

I will game on a Windows based PC, but Linux is a must have on hand held - Windows is too resource intensive, developers are not going to be able to get the same OS optimization out of Windows that they can with Linux

NoneYa, do games w MSI teasing a handheld gaming PC like the Steam Deck

I hope they ditch Windows and use SteamOS or any Linux variant at this point.

The Steam Deck’s OS is one of its best features and Windows is not viable for handheld devices.

And what’s better is that it’s free! There is no reason to slap on an extra $100 to pass onto the consumer because you had to pay some corporation a license for using their OS, giving them more market share they don’t deserve.

One of the best and most needed features of a handheld has to be the standby feature too. The ability to “lock” the device mid-gameplay and come back to it is not only good but necessary. Windows doesn’t have anything like this but SteamOS on the Deck does!

And if they want to one-up the Deck, PLEASE give us more than one USB port. Even if it is USB Type C and a USB A port, that’s better than one port that has to be shared for charging and everything else.

totallynotfbi, do gaming w Combined Arms, the big free retro C&C and Red Alert combo 1.0 is out now

This is a stupid question, but is this a port of the actual missions from C&C/Red Alert, or just inspired by them?

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Not stupid. I want to know too.

Essence_of_Meh,

I think these are new - there's a comment on the project page asking about "playing the classic Red Alert maps" and one of the devs replied they would require some modifications to work.

Besides, original missions can be played with OpenRA so I don't think they would port them here without at least adding support for the new factions (which in turn would require changes in story?).

That's just my guess based on some research though, I'm not a specialist when it comes to these projects.

AnimalSalad, do gaming w Combined Arms, the big free retro C&C and Red Alert combo 1.0 is out now

I apologise for the probably dumb question but can this be played on a samsung tablet? Galaxy tab9 i think

Essence_of_Meh,

Just Windows, Mac and Linux. There's no Android build (that's what would be needed for such tablet).

Olap, do games w Combined Arms, the big free retro C&C and Red Alert combo 1.0 is out now

Missed dune 2k integration

Not even playable /s

Mongostein, do gaming w Combined Arms, the big free retro C&C and Red Alert combo 1.0 is out now

This sounds really cool but I’ve never heard of it. Can anyone vouch for the safety of the programs?

Mischala, (edited )

I have used OPENRA before, it’s safe.

It’s also open source, so you can go dredge the code yourself if you are really concerned.

Mongostein,

I wouldn’t even know where to start 😆

Mongostein,

Ok, after backing up my computer just in case I tried it out and it’s dope af

Mischala, (edited )

Now you’re gaming like it’s 1996.

It’s pretty sick at a lan, because being open source, can just copy paste it to friends machines to do massive brawls.

Send_me_nude_girls, do games w EA opens up more patents for increasing Accessibility in gaming
@Send_me_nude_girls@feddit.de avatar

Maybe they do it because of an increasing risk of getting challenged in court and causing a patent law re-evaluation, which would hurt them for other patents. I don’t think EA does something because of good will.

kubica, do games w EA opens up more patents for increasing Accessibility in gaming
@kubica@kbin.social avatar

A yes, patents is what will help accessibility.

echo64,

this is opening up patents, so yes, in a world like ours having something be patented, but royalty free and anyone can use is much better than the alternative. which is either one company owning it and licencing it. or a patent troll getting it and making it even worse.

the sarcasm in this case, is not warranted. this is a good thing.

SomethingBurger,

The better alternative would be to not patent it in the first place.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

Then a patent troll steals it and makes things worse for everyone.

Patenting something then immediately opening it up is by far the best option.

Poayjay,

That’s literally not a thing. Once something is publicly disclosed it can’t be patented (unless it is by the discloser during the one year grace period). You can’t take someone else’s invention and patent it. If someone does you can invalidate their patent without even a lawyer. If you want something you invent to be free for everyone the best thing you can do is get it out into the world and not patent it.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

You’re not supposed to. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

Nobody wants to spend the court costs to get a patent troll stripped of their bad patent. And for a patent troll you’re going to need a lawyer, they’re going to fight tooth and nail to keep it since that’s their source of income.

Poayjay,

Once again, this is not true. They do what is called a prior art search as part of issuing a patent. They look worldwide for anything that could be considered your invention before your filing date before issuing a patent. Even after a patent is issued, if prior art is presented to the patent office they can rescind the patent. It’s a form and like $100. You don’t need a lawyer to bring prior art to the patent office’s attention. The legal battle will be between the patent office and the patent troll if they are trying to contest the prior art.

Perroboc,

Oh boy are you wrong. Check out the patents to polio vaccines, or Volvos three point seatbelt.

Poayjay,

What? There was no polio vaccine patent. The inventor literally did exactly what I suggested. He made his work freely available so that it could not be patented. Volvo made a business decision to make their patent freely usable and we are still talking about it. Their brand has been permanently associated with safety because of it.

Perroboc, (edited )

Exactly! They tried to patent it, but it didn’t meet the requirements (ipeg.com/jonas-salk-inventor-of-the-polio-vaccine…).

Notice how they tried to patent it “to prevent companies from making unlicensed, low-quality versions of the vaccine. There is no sign that the foundation intended to profit from a patent on the polio vaccine.”

EDIT: and on the other hand, you get things like insulin, where the patent was sold for $1 (www.vox.com/2019/4/…/why-is-insulin-so-expensive)

GorgeousDumpsterFire,

…leaving the idea unclaimed for someone else to patent instead? Strange take.

The patent system is far from perfect, but patents themselves are necessary. EA had an idea, they had the right to patent it. They had the right to keep the patent closed, instead they opted to open it.

SomethingBurger,

You can’t patent something that already exists.

GorgeousDumpsterFire,

If the idea already existed EA wouldn’t have been issued the patent. That’s part of the process of obtaining the patent.

Point is moot because the patent was issued.

SomethingBurger,

My point is if they created something without patenting it, it is no longer possible for anyone to patent it.

echo64,

these things often do not exist yet, hence the patent

hydroel,

Doesn’t “opening up patents” means that anyone can use the ideas behind the patent without charge? Which means that it’s actually not locked anymore, so yes it does help?

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Simply add waiting lists and a max limit of one order per person. Sucks for large families but only until the initial hype is gone.

There’s a reliable way to combat scalping in general. Start selling the item at a high price or in larger quantity and then cut the price whenever sales drop off.

Scalpers can only make money by scalping something when it is being sold below what the market is willing to pay for it in the quantity in which it is available.

On a non-economic note, I’d add that I don’t think I’d want to buy an easily-modified Linux computer system from some random person unless I planned to wipe it. How do you know that the thing hasn’t been rootkitted?

ono,

There’s a reliable way to combat scalping in general. Start selling the item at a high price or in larger quantity and then cut the price whenever sales drop off.

That alone might be effective at reducing scalping, but would also put the item beyond the reach of entire income classes.

tal,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

At first, sure, but the price drops off as existing demand is met.

HidingCat,

The higher price isn't permanent.

I've worked in camera retail and the local shops do just that, actually, and it's effective. The FOMO people get their stuff first at a higher price, the shop gets a boost in margins, and everyone else gets to enjoy cheaper prices three months later (and have the early adopters sit through the bugs and first-run issues).

FrostyCaveman,

Can’t really do that with such a hot product. Would cause too much PR damage and outrage. Companies don’t do it because this way they basically outsource the PR problem to the scalpers while allowing them to play innocent.

The level of outrage over supply issues for a video game console is disproportionate a lot of the time. Outrage that would be better directed elsewhere, but I digress.

Right?

How bad is the scalping? I'm in Singapore and the price premium is about 10%.
