kipo, do games w Fast-paced turn-based tactics game Warside for fans of Advance Wars launches April 14

This is great because Nintendo charging $60 for Advance Wars Re-boot Camp on the Switch was way too high for me to consider it.

Bonesince1997,

And it didn’t piggyback into a new title. I suppose there’s still time for that, but not really. It was just a half-assed re-release, with the Nintendo price tag. They’re not even the best AW games.

jacksilver,

Plus the move away from pixel graphics really hurt the asthetic, but I think they knew without doing something graphically that people wouldn’t fork over $60.

Hyphlosion,

It was hyped up until Russia invaded Ukraine, then they cancelled the launch date because of that. True story.

Then it was unceremoniously released at a way later date.

I’ll be honest, it doesn’t just “look like Advance Wars”. It looks like a rip-off. I love AW but I wish they went with a more original art style, like Wargroove did.

hyperhopper,

Some of the sprites look so identical that I cannot even point out a difference without going back to the original game to look.

It’s like TF2 but with tanks.

CastorSulMush,

Yep, didn’t even try to make it look different. It’s pathetic.

Hyphlosion,

Fine by me. I’ve been wanting more Advance Wars. And that’s what we’re getting.

This is the second article I’ve seen from this site recently where the author doesn’t mention what platforms the game is coming for. C’mon, guys. Have a little respect for your readers.

If anyone is curious, I did a few seconds of research so you don’t have to.

  • PC (Windows + Linux via Steam)
  • Steam Deck support is mentioned
  • PS4
  • PS5
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Xbox Series S/X

Oh man. When I was in the Navy, I had the game boy advance. Advance wars had this sick turn based mode, where you could get your moves in, and then stick it in your pocket and wait to hand it off. We’d have four players playing games that might take all day, sometimes days. Just make your moves, stick it in your pocket, and whenever you find your shipmate, pass it along.

EncryptKeeper,

Sounds like hotseat. A remnant of the good old days.

tkohldesac,
@tkohldesac@lemmy.world avatar

We did that at our lunch hour in high school. We had a super strategic friend that took the entire lunch hour. That pass-around mode was peak early 2000’s multiplayer.

The good ole days where you had to actually know real humans to pay multiplayer.

How did the battery last that much? AFAIK the GBA didn’t have any sleep mechanics… Or was one pack of batteries able to hold 12-24 hrs running the game non stop?

TropicalDingdong,
@TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world avatar

I’m trying to recall. I know we always had a solid supply of rechargeables underway. I also distinctly remember that there is a kind of blanked out hand off screen between players because of fog if war. I don’t recall it having any kind of sleep function. But I know it could run for several hours no issue. I don’t recall having to mind the batteries in particular.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

oddspinnaker,

Some Game Boy Advance games actually had a software-based sleep mode!

You pressed L+R and Select.

On top of that, I was always really impressed by the GBA’s battery life but maybe I’m just old.

Same, I just don’t remember ever bothering about the battery life (unless it turned red) but with that long gaming sessions it would be a concern for kid me probably.

oddspinnaker,

I even remember buying a nice glacier blue rechargeable battery pack and never using it!

I wish I could buy everything in glacier blue now.

I like wargroove 2 the most.

jacksilver,

How does it compare to the first? I don’t know why, but the first one didn’t really click with me. I think the CO being on the field made it feel too fire emblem rather than advance wars.

SolidShake,

It’s more or less the same just bigger.

I’m looking forward to having a new Advance Wars that benefits Nintendo in no way whatsoever and works on my platform of choice.

ErsatzCoalButter, do gaming w Acclaim Entertainment returns to 'support indie developers and reignite classic franchises'

We absolutely do not need another investor-brained corpo games publisher on the scene, especially not one trying to buy up old IP. Buying status symbol brand names is a huge red flag.

Vodulas,

Exactly. All they have is nostalgia to sell. That is all most of these big corpos have anymore.

This is Atari Infogrames all over again

simple, do games w Team Fortress 2 Classic is coming to Steam thanks to Valve adding TF2 to the Source SDK

Awesome! I’ve wanted to play it for a while but never had the chance. Hopefully this reinvigorates the TF2 community.

AnExerciseInFalling,

The TF2 community has been going strong! There’s even been a revitalization of classic custom game modes like TFWare, Balloon race, Dodgeball, Smash Bros, Randomizer, Class Wars, etc: teamwork.tf/community/quickplay

  • XenBad,

I haven’t seen a blatant cheater / bot ever since they did the update that banned a ton of them. They used to be in every single casual match and I would have to join a community server.

    Neat!

Now what we need next is Team Fortress Classic 2.

dan1101, do games w SteamDB now lets you filter out Steam games with AI Generation

That’s good because a large number of demos in the Next Fest had goofy AI logos.

That is such good news! Can’t wait to see if they incorporate more stuff from the SDK too!

MNByChoice, do games w Luanti (formerly Minetest) v5.11 out now with an in-game settings menu and better server browser

Because I want people to be interested, but that requires knowing what a thing is.

    From FAQ:

Is Luanti a clone of Minecraft? # No. Luanti has very different goals from Minecraft, and doesn’t aim to compete with or replace Minecraft. Luanti is an engine and a platform for many different voxel games, rather than one cohesive gaming experience.

When Luanti was initially created in 2010 it intended to replicate what Minecraft Alpha had been shown to do at the time, but it has later diverged into becoming more akin to a game engine.

So… Roblox, but with Minecraft’s graphical style and general mechanics, an open source project, and not a greedy corporation? Cool. I think I’m bookmarking this.

The day Luanti gets split screen local coop it will skyrocket.
