Treczoks, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 hands-on reveals a proper generational upgrade, though its biggest new idea remains unproven

The key problem for the Switch 2 will be to compete with the Steam Deck. While a good Steam Deck is still a bit pricier, there are a myriad of titles, and the vast majority of them are much cheaper than the 70-90 price point targeted by Nintendo.

I’m so excited to see benchmarks. Nintendo’s offering has a 1080p screen, but I’m curious to see if it actually has more horsepower than the deck and its 720p(ish) screen. My guess is it doesn’t in handheld mode.

Knowing Nintendo, we won’t know until June. Gonna hop over to digital foundry now to see what their impressions of the Wednesday direct was.

SkunkWorkz,

The general casual gamer crowd who plays Nintendo games doesn’t know what Steam Deck is.

Treczoks,

That might be true. For party games or Animal Crossing, the Switch is still the top choice. For the non-casual gamer, though, it is way to limited.

AllTheKarma,

Nintendo does not have to compete with the Steam Deck. Nintendo is in a league of their own when it comes to handheld gaming. They will surpass SD sales first month almost guaranteed.

Treczoks,

We will see. The big advantage of the SD is the ginormus library of games that already exist, the advantage of the S2 is that they have the Nintendo exclusive titles that have a good and solid fan base. With the S1, it was a no-brainer, the other consoles were limited in their game selection with a small hand of exclusives, and they were more expensive than the S1. The S2 is not far from the SD in terms of price. So this time, there actually is competition.

AllTheKarma,

SD has sold roughly a million units a year. Switch has sold 150m units in 8 years. Most people that buy one don’t care about a Steam Library. They care about Mario and Zelda. Pokemon. They care about ease of use. And yeah, the console is roughly the same price as the CHEAPEST SKU the SD has.

People will still buy the Steam Deck but it’s a completely different audience. One that is much smaller.

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Then tell me why Nintendo got steamDB to remove cover art for switch games that they know were being emulated on steam deck

AllTheKarma,

Maybe because pirating?! Maybe copyright? I’m not a lawyer lol.

So basically $450+ to play Nintendo IP games at a current-gen caliber level.

This pricing just sucks. Unless you’re a Mario Kart or DK fanboy, you’re probably better off with PS5 or XSX.

EarMaster,
@EarMaster@lemmy.world avatar

The Switch is a family console. Neither Xbox nor Playstation can compete in this sector (and maybe they don’t want to).

SolidShake, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 hands-on reveals a proper generational upgrade, though its biggest new idea remains unproven

Lol the overhype begins I guess.

Viri4thus,

Nintendo commands a (re)legion of fanatics. I was downvoted back to hell for saying the mouse was meh. We’ve had that in the legion go and it’s extremely uncomfortable and not suitable for longer sessions of play. The fact they don’t go bananza with touchscreen but rather take a shitty facsimile of a mouse tells you two things: Nintendo has idiots at the helm Nintendo is dead scared of the steam deck and is actively promoting an image of “we can do pc too”

Walican132,

Idk about your opinion on a touch screen. For both my switch and my steam deck, over 99% of their usage has been docked. A touch screen doesn’t do anything for gamers like me. I do use a keyboard and mouse very often with my deck too.

That said the joycon “mouse” looks way too small and uncomfortable.

I see that comment of yours at -1, really not all that bad imo. Still dumb to downvote people for honest opinions though.

CluckN,

Yeah downvote them for saying the Nintendo Switch 3 should be a cube.

Edit: Darn.

NOT_RICK,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

Why would I need that when I already have a cube that plays games?!?

CosmoNova,

It‘s especially evident shortly after these announcements. I was looking for a resource to summarize and comment on the Direct but most things I found were posts by what I can only describe as ecstatic fanboys. Honestly I was surprised how little the Switch 2 is actually talked about outside this bubble.

ms_lane,

I’m already imagining thousands of shitty attachments made of cheap plastic to make the joycon more comfortable in mouse mode.

I hope they haven’t killed their absolutely wonderful motion controls for this, Splatoon2/3 were perfect as is.

alehel,

Or just connect a regular mouse using Bluetooth. Current switch already supports it for some games.

ladicius,

Don’t care for marketing. Wait what the users say.

Nanny state strikes back.

This is the future the USA would have had if ESRB wasn’t cobbled together in haste

Edit: it wasn’t banned, but Mortal Kombat 10 was and STILL is banned because of violence. This is what happens when you inject “morality” into government policymaking.

abbotsbury,
@abbotsbury@lemmy.world avatar

Government regulations are better than companies deciding what’s allowed.

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Yeah mostly I would agree with that… unfortunately in this case you get exhibit A. Australia.

HorseFD,

Good thing it wasn’t actually banned.

DoucheBagMcSwag,

I see that. We’ll just have to see

RememberTheApollo_,
@RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world avatar

Barely. Probably equally bad in some cases.

An educated citizenry that actively participates in government is the best solution, but we know that’s almost impossible for multiple reasons.

abbotsbury,
@abbotsbury@lemmy.world avatar

I would not say equally bad, citizens are at least theoretically able to influence their government in a democratic system; you have no hope of influencing the ESRB or MPAA or CCA

RememberTheApollo_,
@RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world avatar

Equal “badness” in the sense of commercial/oligarchy takeover or the authoritarian nanny state. Extremes where citizen input is token at best. Russia is technically a democracy, but no regular person there has a hope of changing the government or policy with a vote.

Etterra, do games w Silent Hill f has been banned in Australia, and no one knows why

Probably because it’s Australia and their government are incredibly stupid shitheads when it comes to violence in games.

echodot, do games w Silent Hill f has been banned in Australia, and no one knows why

If PEGI tried this kind of thing I’m pretty sure the general public would linch them. Fortunately with Steam there can be completely ignored these days anyway.

Good luck banning torrents you crotchety old fuckers.

disgrunty,

Don’t forget to use a VPN so you don’t get traced by copyright lawyers! They often seed torrents in the name of gathering IPs to take action against.

Kelly, (edited )

That doesn’t really work in Australia.

AFAIK Dallas Buyers Club was the last major case and the conditions the courts placed on any contact caused the rights holders to decide it wasn’t worth the bother. www.bbc.com/news/business-35547045

The court told them they could buy the infringer’s contact details as a bulk lot that averaged $127 per person. But only if they invoiced for $127 + whatever they were charging for the film. In addition the court would need to review and approve any draft correspondence and call scripts.

All up it feels like the court was taking the most hostile interpretation of the law to protect individuals from being harassed by the business. Good stuff.

Solemarc, do games w Silent Hill f has been banned in Australia, and no one knows why

Didn’t even know this existed lol, crazy how decentralised the game industry has become now that e3 is gone. There’s no official “time to announce your games” part of the year anymore.

GunValkyrie,

It was bundled in the announcement of all the silent hill games coming. Which was mostly overshadowed by the SH2 remake.

hisao, do games w Silent Hill f has been banned in Australia, and no one knows why

Japanese schoolgirls is a big NO-NO in Australia 😅 Jokes aside, this is the first time I hear about this game, watching trailer I immediately thought about “When They Cry”, and then I read this from article: “Silent Hill f is being developed by Neobards Entertainment (which has previously served as a support studio for Capcom’s Resident Evil games), with creature and character design by Kera, and a script by When They Cry writer Ryukishi07.” So now I’m hyped!

eronth,

Oh wow I rarely find people who know about When They Cry. Now I’m interested in seeing more about the game.

daggermoon, do games w Silent Hill f has been banned in Australia, and no one knows why

Australia is pretty censorship heavy is it not? They banned Cannibal Corpse until 2006. I mean no disrespect to any Aussie’s reading this.

chrislowles,
@chrislowles@lemm.ee avatar

None taken, I still get embarrassed when I remember they banned GTA V cuz it had weed in it, got brought back quickly with an R18+ rating games couldn’t get up until then coincidentally.

Agrivar,

How’s the fight for legalization coming down under?

Drusas, do games w Silent Hill f has been banned in Australia, and no one knows why

I really like Silent Hill, but that is just the stupidest name for a game.

neon_nova,

I don’t think so, it’s the name of the town where it takes place. I’d argue that it’s no better or worse than resident evil, stardew valley, or world of Warcraft.

Drusas,

It's the "f" that makes it stupid.

tanisnikana,

It’s the name of a fictitious town in Maine, where things are deeply wrong. People who are subjected to the town end up accounting for their worst impulses via physical manifestations of terrible things. Interestingly enough, most of the time it’s incredibly bright in Silent Hill, easy to see the individually-exclusive monsters coming… were it not for the overwhelming fog with a character of its own.

Virkkunen,
@Virkkunen@fedia.io avatar

They're probably referring to "f", not "Silent Hill"

embed_me,
@embed_me@programming.dev avatar

Wait is that not a typo

Elevator7009sAlt,

At least according to Wikipedia, the “f” at the end is indeed part of the intended game name.
