Katana314, do games w The Game Awards 2023 fell short of honoring its own industry

The article seems to highlight that the money behind such a big event mainly goes to the hype for games yet unreleased, rather than focusing on praise and even advertising for really high-quality games that are already out.

Sometime I’d like it if video game marketing changed this way - it’s much easier to market a game that already has tons of great reviews, and they’ve kind of generated many gamers that are unsure about any marketing they hear. The streamer I watched the awards with ended up finding out about a previously-released game by a developer he’d really enjoyed, thanks to the show.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

These shows are mostly ads. I remember when Candy Crush was popular, and how they were mostly sweeping the awards while also promoting their next thing.

Also pretty sure they bought a LOT of ads too.

You’d think the tentpole genres would at least get a little more airtime.

They ran through the awards for Action Adventure, RPG, etc.

EternalWarBear, do games w The Game Awards 2023 fell short of honoring its own industry

I’m honestly glad I didn’t bother watching this year. Kinda just forgot about it as it started and went and saw Godzilla Minus One. After reading about its reception I think I’d made the better choice.

Mickey, do games w The Game Awards 2023 fell short of honoring its own industry

Yeah I definitely felt that all the stuff I actually wanted to see were rushed and replaced instead with a ton of ads and generic looking game trailers. There were only a few trailers that were actually notable and for a 2h show that was super disappointing. The speeches getting rushed and a lot of them not even having time to go up was also very disrespectful to the devs. Just overall not great.

kelvie,

Curiously, what did you want to see?

A lot of us just treat this like the Superbowl and watch it just for the ads.

Why9,

A lot of us just treat this like the Superbowl and watch it just for the ads.

That is crazy to admit. Here we have people trying to do their best to remove ads from their lives; using PiHoles, AdBlockers and VPNs to get rid of as many ads as possible, but they would sit down and willingly watch ads instead of watching world-class athletes battle for supremacy on their grandest stage.

The closest thing we have in Europe is the Football World Cup. I reckon due to the nature of the sport, they play for 45mins each half and fitting in ads during play would be met with fierce backlash and boycotting. It’s insane to me that you’d look forward to ads instead!

kelvie,

Isn’t that the difference here? Here we are choosing to watch ads – more specifically I want to learn about new games coming out, versus ads that I don’t, such as on most websites, YouTube, my TV, billboards, apps, etc.

Why9,

It’s an important distinction but a valid one

Yes, the key difference is that you’re choosing to watch ads of the genre that the show is based on, but it felt like this year we were rolling RNG for 4 hours and the best we got was monster Hunter Wilds, Light no Fire, Hellblade 2 and checks notes FOUR Fortnite ads?

Many people felt bad that there was no Elden Ring DLC, no Titanfall, no Nintendo surprise even? Rockstar could have saved their trailer for TGA, but chose to have it on their own day. Absent were the plethora of AAA titles releasing 2024-2025. It felt like we rolled RNG for ads at actually want to see, and came away slightly disappointed?

Mickey,

The actual awards where they celebrate the games they are supposedly meant to celebrate. Some respect for the devs who poured all their time into making them instead of being rushed off the stage. And finally it would be nice for them to actually acknowledge the industries struggles this year and put a light on the fact that the gaming culture is kinda rotten and this is meant to counteract it, instead it seems to fall into the same hole.

felykiosa,

Was only here for monster Hunter

Anticorp,

Gotta hoover up that money

OscarRobin,

*3 hour show + 30 min pre-show which still actually included a bunch of awards.

Hopefully this wont be full of microtransactions even of the cosmetic kind. Monster hunter world was amazing but Capcom has become more and more greedy for the past few years.

It’s probably really tempting for them to convert Monster Hunter franchise in to a modern live service with bunch of premium cosmetics, battle passes and Fomo traps. Exoprimal and Street Fighter VI are already suffering from these.

Annoyed_Crabby, do games w Capcom announces Monster Hunter Wilds, coming 2025

Haven’t played Iceborne and Rise, maybe it’s time to upgrade my PC to get at both. 🤔

Goronmon, do games w Capcom announces Monster Hunter Wilds, coming 2025

I’m definitely pumped for this. I never had time to get into a Rise despite playing a ton of Monster Hunter World. Will be interesting to see what, if any, changes are made to the formula.

stardreamer,
@stardreamer@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

MH series always does one big (console) one small (mobile) in that order. Last gen World was the big and Rise was the small.

This is probably gonna be the big one :)

H_Interlinked,

Rise/Sunbreak is no small game. The World game was the first built from the spin-off team, but you’re right that Rise/Sunbreak is from the “Portable” team. I love World dearly for so many reasons, but honestly Rise keeps the old school spirit going that World was a little lacking in. The flare shot or friends only multiplayer system (lack of lobbies list) sort of stiffles the community. This might sound lame to some people, but if you’ve ever made long term friends with strangers you met playing a game, you’re about 10x more likely to do that in Rise than in World imo. It’s just funner and more often has a sillier vibe when grouping up with others, and easier to regroup with them on play sessions days later.

stardreamer,
@stardreamer@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

When I said small I was referring to portable (kinda forgot the word), as hunts can be completed in 15min or less. I think I would still prefer World though, probably because I did 300 Narwa hunts in one week before they fixed the “loot drop tables” bug.

Triple_B, do games w Capcom announces Monster Hunter Wilds, coming 2025

I am beyond excited for this. I’ve been playing MH games since MH2 and they just get better every time. If this caught your eye and you’ve never tried the series, World and Rise are both great and totally worth checking out during the wait until 2025.

My friends brought me kicking and screaming into Unite, then world… it wasn’t until Rise that it finally clicked for me and became fun. Then I went back to world and was blown away.

If it will be on Google Play, it’s kind of useless. And if people need to side-load it, I don’t see a lot of people using it.

I could see them.partnering with phone manufacturers to have it pre-installed like they do with Facebook, TikTok, and all those other apps I have to delete every time I buy a new phone

It's a fun game. Part of its strength is the freedom it gives the players, I was playing with friends last night and we were having a blast. It's that mix of Phasmophobia fear and fun exploring.

I personally am not as big of fan of open random lobbies which is why I don't continue to play Phasma or likely this game, but they are great with friends. Excited for a VR version if they can make it work :)

Anticorp, do games w Your evil deeds may be causing Baldur's Gate 3 bugs

What’s silly is when they immediately know you’ve stolen something, even though nobody was around when you took it. You shouldn’t have to sneak if there’s nobody there.

mhague, do games w Your evil deeds may be causing Baldur's Gate 3 bugs

You can tell this game is beloved. I don’t think I’ve seen this many bugs talked about as funny / cute quirks when they’re just… bugs. It isn’t cats getting drunk in DF, it’s a memory issue that affects your save the longer you play.

It reinforces the idea that the devs are treating players right and making a game that people want to succeed.

Goronmon,

I’m not thrilled with the idea that we lower the bar for game developers based on how biased we are towards them or not.

I feel like the games should speak for themselves and we shouldn’t aim for special treatment.

FooBarrington,

I think it’s less bias towards Larian, and more that they did so many things right with BG3, we can accept some bugs, as long as they are working on fixing them. It’s such a massive game with so many moving parts that some bugs are inevitable, but they don’t stop the rest of the game from being amazing.

Goronmon,

But whether this stance is going to be accepted (via upvotes/downvotes) in this type of community comes down to a simple popularity contest.

If I thought that Starfield was fun and tried this type of sentiment, I would be downvoted. Would that be because there is some objective measure of quality that separates the two games, or just because more people are fans of Larian than Bethesda?

FooBarrington,

As I previously said, there is an objective measure of quality that separates the two games.

Goronmon,

You didn’t say that, so I’m curious what you feel that measure would be.

Buddahriffic,

Personally, I don’t get frustrated so much by the presence of bugs themselves (though it can depend on their impact) as the longevity of some of them. A lot of the bugs were cute in Skyrim, but if you see the same or similar bug in the new game, it gets less cute.

But there could be a part of it that comes from “familiarity breeds contempt”. BG3, while being a sequel to BG2, is new and fresh. Starfield feels like Skyrim in space. Bethesda has been a powerhouse for a long time, while Larian wasn’t as popular going in, so expectations are higher for Bethesda, too.

Though I’ve gotta admit I haven’t played any BG3 and not much Starfield, so this is a bit speculative.

FooBarrington, (edited )

I did say “they did so many things right”, with which I was referring to this objective measure of quality. There is a good reason this game is so universally beloved, and there are good reasons why Starfield isn’t.

If you want a random assortment of these “right things”:

  • Many, many choices that strongly impact your gameplay (Starfield has few interesting quests, most “choices” lead to the same outcomes)
  • Very interesting companions that have their own well-defined personalities and perspectives (Starfield/Bethesda companions just don’t have as many interesting things to say/as much cross-interaction)
  • Dialogues with interesting animations (Starfield/Bethesda dialogues are pretty static, looking at you, since… Oblivion I think?)
  • Interesting and detailed world design without constant repition and emptiness (Starfield is mostly empty, and mostly not unique)
  • An interesting story with a few twists (Starfield feels very generic Sci-Fi to me, but your mileage may vary)
  • Relatively few loading screens for a pretty big world (Starfield has constant loading screens)
  • Strong replayability due to many different options (Starfield has a few interesting NG+ ideas, but generally isn’t too interesting to repeat)
Cybersteel,

Should supposed “good” games get a pass? Nay I say both bad and others game be put on the same weighing scale. The subjective “goodness” of a game shalt have no bearing on the sanctity of the product.

FooBarrington, (edited )

Did somebody say “let’s ignore all problems good games have”?

If a game is good, and bugs are getting fixed, why shouldn’t the bugs be viewed more leniently than a non-good game with bugs that are not getting fixed? Why must we view these things as equivalent, when they are different in multiple dimensions?

Edit: case in point: lemm.ee/post/16532405

bearwithastick,

Have you played the game though? It’s filled to the brim with content. I already have a lot of hours in and I think I’m only about half through the game. You talk to friends and everyone is telling a different story of how they approached a problem in the game. Almost every conversation in the game has voice lines.

It’s absolutely not flawless. Controls are clunky, path findinf of your compagnions is weird most of the time etc. But you absolutely see that this game is a labour of love and not a quick cash grab. Plus again, it’s massive and it’s one of the few games where I actually understand them not being able to fix every bug in the game.

So I wouldn’t say that we lower the bar with them in relation to bugs. They have raised the bar in content and overall quality so high that you are more willing to forgive / overlook a lot of the issues, as long as they are not game breaking.

kogasa,
@kogasa@programming.dev avatar

Obviously it helps that it’s a great game. But I had fun with the bugs. I had one guy who, when pickpocketed, would instantly bolt out the door and down the street at the speed of sound.

Aqarius,

IDK, if I found myself being pickpocketed by four grim individuals, armed to the teeth and covered in blood, I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same.

Hoping they can get the multiplayer mod fixed after this update. Been playing bit by bit with a friend which has been fun, but it’s a travesty we have to rely on a mod because multiplayer wasn’t supported by default like basically every Tales game to come before.
