Every November I play Dishonored. Just finished the main game, and now I’m playing the Knife of Dunwall DLC. Next will be Brigmore Witches, and then it’s on to Dishonored 2. I love these games yo.

CharlesReed, (edited )

Dishonored is amazing! I love that even though the story is pretty linear (and a great story it is), there's so many ways to go about to achieve the objectives. It's a fun time.
I played Dishonored 2 once, but I couldn't really get into it because, one, I didn't like the changes they made to the Outsider, and two, for whatever reason it felt kinda depressing to play. It was pretty cool you could choose who to play as though. I've thought about revisiting it at least once more to play as Corvo, since I picked Emily the first time.

I really liked the differences between Corvo’s and Emily’s powers. I also like the variety of ways they allow you to complete tasks and combine powers.

I’ve been playing Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria with a group of friends. It’s pretty janky at times, but the vibe is pretty fun and we’re all LotR nerds to some degree, so it’s been fun arguing about where the devs were lore friendly and where they colored outside the lines. It’s also nice to play a survival crafting game like this that has no PvP so the balancing can be entirely based on PvE play, which means the grind isn’t anywhere near the level of Ark or Conan. I’d say it’s a more janky little brother of Grounded with a LotR coat of paint and some pretty cool level design.

flatlined, do games w What are your go-to sources for game reviews and finding new games?

Most have already been mentioned. Rock paper shotgun is a good source too, albeit pc gamers only.

Aqarius,

Man, they used to be great when Gillen and Smith were still on board.

flatlined,

I assume you know People make Games on Youtube? Smith’s in there, and it’s pretty dang good journalism.

Aqarius,

Very true.

partiallycyber, do games w What did you think of Sea of Stars?

I had a similar reaction!

Spending a couple extra hours wrapping up quests and collecting conches (on the recommendation of a friend) wound up being well worth it for me, the true ending felt much more satisfying.

For what it’s worth, all the quests take somewhere around 20-40 minutes each, if I remember correctly. Even the collection quest wasn’t too bad, thanks to the treasure finding parrot.

sosodev,

Yeah… I’ll probably end up doing it eventually. It’s just really lame to get hyped for the final fight and be told “go do side quests for a few more hours and then come back.”

Zerfallen, do games w What are some alternative to soulless videogame franchises?

Pretty random list off the top of my head:

Hyperlight Drifter, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Ruiner, Grim Dawn, Rime

smeg, do gaming w Backpack Battles: business model i haven't seen since Minecraft, and it seems to be working?

Sadly I’ve seen a few games available for free recently which are slightly deceptive in mentioning that they’re actually only demos. The example that sticks out is Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, not to be confused with Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition (Base Game), a paid DLC which is actually the game. Obviously you see what’s going on pretty quickly, but the headline “game is free” is not the same as “demo available”!

Am I allowed to say Diablo IV? I really like Diablo IV

No, sorry.

Please leave.

I kid! Love what ever game makes you happy!

astrionic,

What do you like about it? I’m genuinely curious. I’m happy you’re enjoying it, I wish I could too, but somehow it just bores me.

CarlsIII,

The combat is really satisfying! People keep telling me I should prefer doing Baal runs over and over in Diablo 2 but I just can’t relate to that. Yeah, the game gets boring around level 70, but it’s fun up until that point, plus I am only on my third character because I’ve done once each season. I know there’s a mentality out there that a Diablo game is a failure unless it’s the only game you ever want to play for the rest of your life, (which, btw, I don’t even feel that about Diablo 2), but it’s ok to take breaks and play different games and come back to a game when it’s updated. I guess whatever people think Diablo 4 “should” be isn’t the game for me.

astrionic,

I think I’ve just been irreversibly damaged by Path of Exile’s fast gameplay, D4’s combat felt pretty tedious to me in comparison. Or maybe I’ve just had the wrong builds so far. I’ve been meaning to give it another shot but there have been so many other good games recently so I guess it’ll have to wait.

Yeah I don’t get that either. I have to skip leagues (seasons) in Path of Exile both because I wouldn’t have enough time to play other games if I didn’t and also because I tend to play it so much that I get tired of it and need a break afterwards.

Lies of P! I just killed the second-to-last boss, and oh boy was it tough. That game is absolutely amazing, and has surpassed pretty much every expectation I had of it.

I’ve also been playing a fair bit of Deep Rock Galactic, which is always a delight!

Heavybell, do games w Would you prefer if games had a separate difficulty setting for boss fights?
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, I’m generally in favour of more options when feasible. Hell, if someone wants to skip 90% of a single player game, more power to them. Hell, any non-competitive online game too, though I doubt many publishers would consider not charging extra for it…

Fizz, do gaming w AITAH for pirating games before buying them?
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

Yes you are an “asshole” for stealing but also fuck these companies are so shit you shouldn’t care.

In a pure ethical debate its wrong but on a practical level I think its fine. Steam has a 2hr no questions asked refund policy which I feel is reasonable and so I don’t pirate unless I want to play a game and not compensate the people who made it.

If you refund too often they will consider it “abuse” and stop letting you do it.

Knusper, do games w Looking for a survival sandbox game where you progress through technological ages

This is going to be an oddball suggestion, but quite a unique gaming experience, in my opinion: NodeCore

It’s basically Minecraft meets puzzling to progress through technologies.

The game is rather difficult. And it being so niche, there’s no wiki to tell you the solutions, except for actual Wikipedia, because somehow it’s relatively realistically modelled.
As such, it has this feeling of being the first human to figure these things out and I found it massively rewarding when I pushed through some of the more complex puzzles.

The whole game is completely free. Just download the Minetest engine/launcher and search for “NodeCore” in the Content-tab.

Thanks man. But what about “minicivilization”? I don’t find this one on steam

Twigs218,

It looks to be actually called “Microcivilization”

store.steampowered.com/app/…/Microcivilization/

Phoonzang,

I think it’s “Tiny civilization”, which is really cute indeed. Got it on sale for less then 2 bucks, well worth it!

Edit: nah, probably not, but tiny civilization is a nice little game anyway :)

Dyskolos,

Indeed. Thanks for the hint. Looks interesting. The other commenter named the right one: “micro civilization”

I really liked Earthless, which is similar to Cobalt Core but adds grid movement.

Galactic Glitch was pretty fun, too.

ColorSpace is annoyingly challenging, in an addicting sort of way.

I also played a lot of ‘Survivors’ games. Most of them sucked, and surprisingly few worked well on Steam Deck, but Sea of Survivors was fun.

DestinyGrey,

I’ll have to check out Earthless. I’ve been in the mood for single player games recently.

BmeBenji, do gaming w When was a game's price worth it to you?

I can’t say I have any sort of standard way to gauge that. Once the money is spent, I don’t really think about it anymore and yeah that’s probably a result of my monetary privilege, but it’s my honest answer to your question. It’s almost impossible to determine about the monetary value of an experience of a piece of art.
