Sv443, do games w What is your favorite Metroidvania?
@Sv443@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ori series, specifically Ori and the Will of the Wisps. It’s my absolute favorite game of all time. It’s got the amazing visuals and insanely good OST, crisp and satisfying platforming and combat, engaging and unique bossfights, incredibly gripping story, good difficulty settings and going for 100% is rewarding and not nearly as annoying as in many other games. While it may stray a tiny bit from the classic Metroidvania formula I think it still does it incredibly well.

Ashtear, do gaming w Are there any good communities, Lemmy or otherwise, for gamers 30+?

It’s not explicitly 30+, but I think !retrogaming is one of the best active gaming communities on the Fediverse with a good mix of links and discussion, and the nature of the content certainly attracts older gamers.

@AbeilleVegane@beehaw.org avatar

The community is dead, most recent post more than a year ago, or is this a bug on my end? Or we defederated and I’m no aware?

Ashtear,

Could be? I know Beehaw is defederated from a lot but I haven’t kept up. The community is definitely active.

Lfrith,

There’s posts this month, so might be the case if on beehaw.

Sas,

Yee i think we’re defederated from world and from what i hear of that place it’s probably for the better

apprehensively_human, do games w What is your favorite Metroidvania?

I was shocked to see no mention of Ori in any of the comments here before I realized you had already recommended it in the OP. I have no issues with seconding that, the Ori series is really good.

GottaHaveFaith, do games w Gaming Laptop with Linux Preinstalled and 32GB+ RAM?

Lenovo Legion. If you pick a configurable one and remove windows they'll lower the price accordingly (sometimes 100€ for windows pro). Some models offer Linux pre-installed.

I will look into that!

MonkderVierte, do games w Valve's new hardware will NOT be loss leaders

…the fuck is a “loss leader”?

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

A product sold at a loss/very attractive price to attract customers. The idea is that they customers will come due to the cheap price of a desirable product and buy additional other stuff at the store, which should hopefully make up for the loss.

E.g. a restaurant advertise cheap burgers to attract customers, and then make the profit on alcoholic beverages that customers buy alongside the cheap burger.

MonkderVierte, (edited )

So the Razor and blades model (printers) but in games?

UndercoverUlrikHD,
@UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev avatar

From the second sentence on the page:

It is different from loss leader marketing and product sample marketing, which do not depend on complementary products or services.

So the Razor and blades model would probably be the more accurate term for what people thought the new steam hardwate would be, yeah.

Though steam won’t lock you to their services.

HeyJoe, do games w Valve's new hardware will NOT be loss leaders

On the one hand, i get it. It will be for enthusiasts only if that’s the case. On the other hand, I feel like for the amount of profit this company brings in, I am a little shocked that they don’t even try to cut the price back a bit to sell more. I guess whats the point when you don’t even have to do this at all and it sounds like the entire project is just a fun way to spend some time seeing what you can come up with and sharing that with the people that can afford to buy cool things.

mnemonicmonkeys,

On the one hand, i get it. It will be for enthusiasts only if that’s the case.

Note that I haven’t said anything about what the price will be, just that Valve has stated that it won’t be a loss leader.

I’ve seen rumors that the Bill Of Materials plus Valve’s usual overhead would still result in a system valued at $500, though I haven’t seen the source and am very skeptical of it.

On the other side, XBox is allegedly targeting $1200 on their standardized custom gaming PC, which I doubt would be worth the price, especially with it running Windows.

HeyJoe,

Oh, I agree. My price is just speculation. Also, Xbox is done. They had a handful of exclusives this year that, as far as I saw, were nothing to sell systems over, and from the looks of it, only Fable is set for next year. As soon as I saw them jump ship with a console and finally share their best games like gears of war, I knew it would only be a matter of time.

That handheld is also windows only and to late to the party, and your right they just went full pc only at a price nobody will pay when you can probably get your own pc that will have little difference. They will be with Sega soon enough and probably use the companies they purchased to continue creating games for everyone else and maybe just focus on the windows store for semi exclusivity after the pc thing fizzles out.

I think we should see what it’s priced at before we start making proclamations about the Steam Machine being the “standard gaming PC”.

Its so easy to develop for the steam deck and steam devices. Just FYI it really is just another machine. Theres no “unlocking” or “side loading” or anything. Its just a computer. Thats it!

Finally, an arch distro where there’s a chance for some actual support and without a community that consists entirely of basement dwelling, self-righteous wankers, who have never learned social human interaction!

Seriously, Manjaro is kind of bad, but every time I’m tempted to install Arch, it takes minutes on the forums to convince me what a horrible idea that would be.

droans,

without a community that consists entirely of basement dwelling, self-righteous wankers, who have never learned social human interaction!

Well, it’s made for gamers soooo…

sugar_in_your_tea,

Idk, I wouldn’t really call Steam OS an Arch distro. It’s not quite as extreme as the relationship between PlayStation and FreeBSD, but it’s in that realm.

The user has very little control over the base system, which is distributed by Valve. Most of the user’s interaction is on the surface, such as through Flatpaks and whatnot, not w/ the package manager. It’s like other distros like Aeon (openSUSE) and Silverblue (Fedora) where the user doesn’t really interact w/ the distro itself.

it takes minutes on the forums to convince me what a horrible idea that would be.

The reason the forum is like that is because Arch is designed to be a system where you have the tools to solve problems yourself and not need to ask for help. That’s why the install process is so manual, the intention is that if you can make it through that, you probably won’t need much help from anyone else. The install process has gotten easier, but it’s still to a point where it generally discourages “casuals”, for lack of a better term.

I used Arch for about 5 years and I think I interacted w/ the forums like twice. If interacting w/ the forums is something that’s important to you, then Arch probably isn’t for you. Something like Debian or Fedora will probably be a better fit.

I really don’t get people’s fascination w/ Arch. It’s basically a LEGO-style Linux distro, and that’s not really what most seem to want. I switch from Arch to openSUSE because openSUSE had everything I liked from Arch (rolling release, mostly-vanilla packages, etc) and most of the reliability of a release-based distro. I still don’t recommend it for new users because the community is pretty small so getting help is a bit harder, but people are generally nicer than Arch users.

THE PROPHECY!

namingthingsiseasy, do gaming w Don't make me choose!

It’s a very interesting question. In terms of which game I’d rather play, it’s SMW. But in terms of technical achievement, SMB3 is unquestionably better (in my opinion of course).

SMB1 was a watershed moment for gaming - perhaps the biggest that there ever was. SMB3 was a revolutionary improvement on top of that. In light of that, SMW almost feels like a bland port. This isn’t to say it’s bad by any means, but in terms of the impact that it had on gaming as a whole, it’s not very significant and just feels like an iterative improvement.

SMW is still a great game! And if I could only play one for the rest of my life, I would choose it over SMB3. But in terms of historical impact on gaming, I would say that SMB1, Mario64 and SMB3 were more revolutionary.

Yoshi’s Island is my favorite however.

Just as an FYI, you’re getting down voted because you’re asking for assistance on a “game” that seems to be App Store shovelware. The only resolution you will find is through the App Store itself. Best of luck getting the devs to respond!
