Shadowrun - it had a tremendous effect on my actual worldview (as did other cyberpunk works). The near-future cyberpunk setting offers plenty of opportunity for satire, being rooted in this world makes some geography and history relatable and mixing it with fantasy elements does not only make it more colorful and varied, but also prevents unrealistic stuff from breaking my immersion, because it does not pretend to be realistic.
As a young nerd obsessed with RPGs and William Gibson’s work I was outraged at the idea of putting fantasy into cyberpunk. But then I picked up a damaged copy of the Shadowrun rules from a bargain bin and was blown away by the worldbuilding, they really found a way to make it all fit thematically and logically and I ended up running the game for years.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - probably the most cliche answer possible, but Troika really did build a game that took you to the world of vampires in LA in the early 2000s.
Arcanum - a fantasy world undergoing industrialization with technology being in direct conflict with magic.
UnderRail - A society stuck underground connected by tunnels between towns/cities and nodes. The writing (quests/characters) is not that great, but the world-building is top notch.
I’d add Redemption as well. It’s super rough now, but I played it 20 years ago, and I was amazed by all the lore. I didn’t know until after I finished it, that the game was based on a TTRPG.
I think the loudest and longest laugh I ever got was at the very end of Untitled Goose Game. Not gonna spoil it for anyone, but once I figured out the joke that had been stewing for three straight hours, it had me laughing for the rest of the night.
You need to get cod because everybody has cod. Its cod. You ever told a colleague/schoolfriend/acquaintance/anyone that you like video games? Their next question is “what prestige cod are you”. Cod is love. Cod is life. Cod is the game. You’re not a loser are you?
Which one? Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Modern Warfare 3 (2011), Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II (2022), or Modern Warfare III (2023)?
When the update is ironed out and released, I’m going for another play through.
If you find 2 generator, you can keep one in base for electricity and one at petrol station that you temporarily turn on to fill petrol cans. That stove could be good for a long time.
Legitimately the only thing keeping me from switching to Build 42 in the long term is the lack of multiplayer. I’m excited. The bits I’ve played are awesome
As far as i know Build 42 currently doesn’t have online multiplayer. I think it supports local splitscreen but they’re saving the Online Multiplayer for when the Singleplayer content of B42 is ironed out as far as i’m aware. Which is fair
3DS emulation still has a long way to go (the emulators themselves) since Citra got taken down. But some are making great progress, Azahar is a nice project to keep an eye on. Like I mentioned in the article…it can only get better!
As to original games being made after the systems shut down, I’d love to see that too! Now we’re seeing these retro handheld manufacturers pivot to dual screen systems like the AYANEO Pocket DS, AYN Thor and the Anbernic DS, there’s definitely a community and plenty of consoles to play them on!
