Edit: Started to read through everyone else’s opinions and it dawns on me that this is just going to be a giant list of things I may have never even heard of that I might want to play, and can’t. You are a sadomasochist. :)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Gamma. Completely free if you don’t count the disk space and one of the funnest, and most difficult games I have played.
Running around like most other FPS games will just get you killed. The AI is written in such a way that it correctly understands actual flanking, and when it peeks a corner, it does it exactly the same way a real player would - it’s actually scary.
I snuck into some occupied buidlings and killed every enemy except one. I was in a barn which had a front entrance and a hole blown in the back wall. I knew that the last enemy was out the front, across the road, inside the window of a building there, so I went out the hole in the back of the building and around the side, intending to go behind a fence and then behind their building to get them. When I got to a place I should have been able to see them, they weren’t there. I turned around and they were behind me along the fence - I nearly shit my pants. When I had the idea to go around back, the AI apparently had the idea to run out the front of their building into the front entrance of mine, and take me from behind by complete surprise - essentially the same exact tactic I had thought of.
It was then I realized how great the AI actually was and now every time I play I live in complete fear.
The first video game was the precursor to Pong, called Tennis for Two. It was created on an oscilloscope in Brookhaven National Laboratory. Had they thought to patent it, the US government would’ve held ownership of all video games.
Thirded. You can also stream your PS4/PS5 to it if you want to play one of those games but don’t want to have to turn off your stories to play on the TV.
Edit: inscryption is WASD +spacebar only, if you can do that with a slight seating adjustment. It’s great for planes. The post game content might be even better than the game content, haha.
I didn’t know that, that is awesome. Inscryption is one of the coolest gaming experiences of the last few years. It’s right up there with titles like Subnautica and the Outer Wilds for me. Daniel Mullins is a creative lad.
I hope its active enough in the Lemmy-verse to support it, I always considered that kind of comm to almost require a large amount of people to make it useful

I already do, but I’m also not as avid a gamer as I once was. Every FPS became borderline unplayable when loot crates became a thing. Call me old fashioned, but I liked when games had the same weapons for everyone, and there weren’t random cards or whatever that made people’s guns more powerful / reload /shoot faster, etc. It really brings an imbalance to the game, and enables these stupid gambling sites. The companies making the games are making money hand over fist, so they aren’t going to stop any time soon barring regulation, and looking at this administration, good fucking luck with that. Boycott away.
Yeah I remember thr same thing. Everything else was suppose to be a package update.
But back-end technology and usage expectations change, and there’s a limit to what front-end changes an existing user tolerates. That was never a promise they could keep.
It has lasted a really long time, though. I don’t decry 11 existing. I’m upset they’re sunsetting 10 without giving us a chance to wait for 11 to get better, let alone for ‘oops we fixed the fuckups’ W12.
I’m a lifelong Windows user and tried Linux many many times but could never wrap my head around it. Recently I installed Nobara and it’s exactly the noob-friendly experience I need. All of my games run flawlessly, even the VR game I play. And everything is just FASTER. I never realized how bloated Windows was until now. I can’t imagine going back to Windows at this point.
