These screenshots slapped me back into 1998. I loved that river level. Jumping the boat felt so fucking cool.

I’ve not played a newer or older Mario Kart game with better fundamentals. I’d like more tracks for it but other than that it’s perfect. The newer ones are pretty but there’s too much going on in many of the tracks (and I’m really not fond of the flying/water thing they do either).

Spaghetti Kart (The Recompilation I play on) has a Track Maker i think and i believe you can share tracks between players, but i’m not sure how good any of the custom tracks are.

The newer ones are pretty but there’s too much going on in many of the tracks (and I’m really not fond of the flying/water thing they do either).

I do agree though about the newer ones, it has way too much going on in the courses. Furthermore, Me and My friends are in disagreement but i think the roster is too big and there’s too many tracks

Eventually I plan on playing Spaghetti Kart - partly for that reason!

I would agree that the sprawling roster and tracklist are a bit much.

Is this mostly line work or stippling?

BazaarMonk,
@BazaarMonk@lemmy.world avatar

Mostly just line work and regular shading. The texture of the paper gives it that stippling look.

@ooli3 With respect to the linked article, I'm not liking the term "Metroidbrania" either.

I played AC: Rogue most recently. Its the first time I refused to 100% the missions and, for the most part, skipped collectibles. I started off going for everything and was struggling to enjoy it and didn’t feel motivated to play it. Granted, Rogue is a weak game in the series (alternate dev), but I still wanted the story (even though the script and voice acting was laughable at points).

I 100%d the missions and got 90%+ collectibles (in this order) in Unity, Syndicate, Origins, Odyssey, and IV prior to that. It was kinda nice to be free and and pin myself in side-quest-purgatory at 90% mission completion to not “end the game too soon”.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Rogue is definitely a weak game, and i say that as someone who enjoyed Rogue. I tried to 100% it too and got stumped. It’s a shame, because the idea of making unique last gen games in series is something I think was a good idea for players who can’t get newer hardware, just the execution was kind of poor.

So what made 2007 even better for you? I feel like that‘s important to know since these games didn‘t come out in 2025. You could‘ve played anything in 2007 that came out before that year.

That was almost 18 years ago so I dont remember much but i do remember playing SNES and NES games and some adobe flash games during that time. Nothing major happened during all these 18 years. My gaming activity peaked last year. Earlier years, I only used to finish 1-3 games tops. This year its almost 40. Yes. 40 games in a single year

If you like 8-bit gaming, I recommend getting the free BBC micro emulator BeebEm

Then get the ROM Citadel

It’s a Metroidvania from before either Metroid or Castlevania. It still plays well, it’s still difficult, the puzzles are logical but require thought, and it’s several hours of gameplay to complete.

Arkham Asylum but not the rest? /s

I loved Spider-Man and Miles Morales, I need to play Spider-Man 2 but I’m waiting for a better sale on steam.

Also, Guardians of the Galaxy blew me away with how fun and awesome it was. Like I honestly feel bad for waiting so long to play it.

Arkham Asylum was the last Arkham game i played. Played it in reverse order.

It’s a little old and more Metroid- than -vania: A Robot Named Fight

EDIT: since no one else mentioned it, Timespinner is kinda good too, despite being a somewhat short game

I haven’t seen it mentioned and granted I’ve not played it but I’ve watched both be played and Blasphemy 1 and 2 seems really, really good.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I don’t know, I played Blasphemous this summer and had a very mixed time with it. I really wanted to love it but it mostly pissed me off. Too much gameplay design specifically intended to waste your time and make you miserable. Which - I guess - is the point because the game is all about the virtue of suffering. I just didn’t find it particularly fun to play.

Great world building, music and art though.

yoriaiko, do games w What is your favorite Metroidvania?

Castlevanias: Aria of Sorrow, Order of Eclessia, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin (no, no Symphony on my top-top list, it’s awesome, but not that awesome);

Ori and the Blind Forest mentioned already;

Axiom Verge 1 and 2;

Some call it heresy, but… Dark Souls! bit harder, bit turn-based (combat, aye, heresy x2, but stamina system makes it turn based for me, thats wild)… but running all around, having maze with many options, each boss unlocks new paths and parts of map… 200% metroidvania to me.

mic_check_one_two,

+1 for the Castlevania Aria/Dawn of Sorrow games. The Soma Cruz games were where the series truly hit its peak.

Portrait of Ruin was alright. I enjoyed that they found a way to incorporate more varied environments into the series.

Order of Ecclesia took me a while to start enjoying. The weird hybrid 3D graphics threw me off at first. Once I got past that, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
