mohab, do gaming w A game, or series of, you believe belongs in a museum?

I can only speak about my favorite genres:

Action games: this one is easy—Devil May Cry 1.

Shmups: Hmm… Battle Garegga? I'd actually rather go for a CAVE shmup seeing how influential they were, but I could be biased: DoDonPachi.

Fighting games: hmm… a bunch could go in here, but if I have to choose one, it should be Street Fighter II. Biased pick is Guilty Gear Plus R.

Apparently there is some petition? Taking a look now.

Makes me wonder if Echo Project will have to worry about any of their games. Echo itself doesn’t have explicit sexual content, but it does have violence involving minors, kidnapping, torture, and suggestions of rape.

Many years ago, my nephew - having then just received his first console - asked me “Uncle, have you ever heard of an ex-box-three-six-tee?”

Mind you, I don’t remember exactly when he asked me that, but I’m 37 now; I was definitely around for the 360.

I began playing Runescape in 2007. I watched it go through so many changes over the years. The original game is now almost completely unrecognisable from the way it used to be!

I dipped in and out of OSRS for a few years as well. I no longer play it, but I logged into my account a few days ago. Here’s the stats I had before I quit

I also recently started playing osrs again. I highly recommend using the Runelite client! It has a lot of extra plugins that will both make the game look better, run better and help you with quests. You can choose how much help you want too. That plugin is called QuestHelper. Runelite is also acknowledged and accepted by Jagex so no worries on that front, the majority of osrs players use Runelite.

Have you ever tried the shadowrun games at all? They’ve had a decent track record overall, and several versions exist on steam and play at least okay on the deck (can’t remember exactly which, but protonDB exists for a reason lol).

Might be too similar to d&d for you, but I’ve never seen them be that similar in execution.

The big recent release that’s missing from your list is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. For me, it really evokes that FF8/FF10 era of Final Fantasy.

I hear the developers are still working on the Steam Deck build so it might be a bit rough at the moment, but since streaming from your Linux desktop is an option, I’d highly recommend it. Yes, it’s as good as people say.

Definitely getting it sooner or later!

SkyezOpen,

I didn’t care to play it because I don’t love FF style rpgs anymore, but I watched my girlfriend play and it was worth just for the story and music. The soundtrack is INSANE. Avoid listening to it until you play, if you can. It makes everything so much better.

Ni no Kuni

Star Ocean series

Caves of Qud

Chrono Tigger is a crowd favorite

Pokemon, if you somehow never played it

Not a ttrpg, but Cavestory is one of my favorite classics of all time

Also not a ttrpg, but Dust: An Elysian Tail has a great story.

nesc, do games w Thoughts on SciADV?

I liked steins;gate, chaos;head was meh at best, and worked like shit both on windows and in wine. Can’t remember anything about robotics;notes I think anime was alright?

tgirlschierke,

I’ve never played S;G but I did love what I played of C;H due to the unrivalled level of paranoia that game instilled in me through its storytelling. I’ve heard it goes a bit off the rails, but I am not exactly rushing through it, and I’m avoiding spoilers like the plague.

Games that I really enjoyed:

  • Final Fantasy 7 through 10
  • Final Fantasy 5

So… did you skip FF VI or did you specifically not like it?

pathief,
@pathief@lemmy.world avatar

I played it recently-ish but didn’t enjoy it. There are a lot of characters and the story is constantly moving between them. I didn’t enjoy that.

Interesting, it’s my absolute favourite personally. I don’t hear many people dislike it.

On the subject of pixel art retro styled RPGs though I want to make a case for https://store.steampowered.com/app/1069160/SKALD_Against_the_Black_Priory/. It doesn’t have voice acting, but otherwise should satisfy your demands given you say you tolerate pixel art. It’s very short for an RPG (16-20h) but that also means it’s very concise, has no filler and no grinding. Should play well on a Steam Deck too. I played it back in January I think and had an absolute blast with it. Cool story and world building, fun somewhat simple combat. Very enjoyable.

EDIT: though there is some dice rolling in dialogue, so maybe that’s a no go.

I don’t hear many people dislike it.

I know it’s a totally unpopular opinion, I know FF6 is often rated as the best one of the series. Just didn’t click for me.

I’ll check out ot Skald, thanks!

selkiesidhe, do games w What are the best free mmorpgs for a beginner?

Wow isn’t very newbie friendly due to the mere SIZE of this behemoth but if you work at it, it can be enjoyable. You’ll never run outta stuff to do.

It’s free till level 20. Then you can decide whether you wanna continue. You can pay for the sub with in-game gold.

NuXCOM_90Percent, do games w What are the best free mmorpgs for a beginner?

Unless you are playing purely for nostalgia, I would very much avoid runescape. It isn’t a game for kids to play during typing class. It is very much an obnoxiously sweaty (set of) game(s).

I think you can play the entire original campaign for FF14 for free? And FF14 is probably THE best theme park MMO out there. That said, my experience is “it is the best community on the internet” is very much marketing and you WILL have bad experiences during dungeons… which are mandatory for story progression. You can negate that if you join a clan but then you aren’t really playing with The Community and are already into hardcore-ish play.

I don’t know where the free/paid demarcations are, but I would actually recommend Guild Wars 2 or Elder Scrolls Online for a newbie. The latter does suck if you want to do any crafting as a free player (and inventory management in general will be hell) but you are there for the overworld gameplay. And both GW2 and ESO are very much geared toward playing solo in a crowd. As in you’ll walk around the overworld which is basically a single area with 10-20 other players. You’ll do event quests together, see each other while you go to the store or walk toward an instanced area, and so forth. But you won’t have to worry about someone telling you they are going to <REDACTED> your family because you didn’t skip a cutscene or aren’t holding aggro properly in newbie dungeon.

If you get into those? You can maybe find a guild and play some of the higher level content. Or you can go pick up FF-MMO or WoW or even SWTOR (apparently it is still going).

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

As far as dungeons in FF14, at this point, I believe that basically every dungeon can now be done “solo” (that is taking 3 other NPCs with you to complete the dungeon). And the trials, I believe, mostly have that as well, though I’m 100% positive on all of them.

But the point is: as far as dungeons go a player can get through them by themselves now. In fact, I think much of the main storyline content is now solo-able.
