What have you been playing?
I’ve recently finished Resident Evil 2 Remake for the first time. I’m a longtime fan of RE entries (the original trilogy being one of the earliest gaming memories that I have), and the remake of the first title is one of my favourite games ever, so I was kind of curious to see how the second one would be.
I’ve never been more torn on a game. The moment-to-moment gameplay is great! The environment is greatly improved from the original, the creatures design is awesome, the horror aspect has been done well, and it mostly doesn’t overstay its welcome. I can see why people enjoyed it so much when it was released.
As a remake, it fails spectacularly. The story makes no sense, the writing is abysmal and made me hate most of the characters. And of course there’s that thin-veiled misogyny that’s become (unfortunately) fairly common in most recent entries of the franchise. It’s a sad day when a game from the 90s can boast being more progressive than its counterpart from 2019…
Laser Squad, playing couch hot-seat is what sent me down this path.
I really liked Jagged Alliance 2, Afterlight and especially X-COM: Apocalypse. Apocalypse had such radical departures from the first two Ufo titles, which did not make it very well liked among enthusiasts, in particular the real-time battle mode. But the game had such fun mechanics and steep difficulty curve, I really enjoyed the challenge of it, as opposed to getting another Enemy Unknown clone that was TFTD.
It’s disappointing to see Valve not fully embracing the hard work and creativity of mod developers, especially when so much effort has gone into recreating Team Fortress 2. A partnership could not only honor that dedication but also revitalize the crazy chicken 3d game in a way that benefits both the community and Valve.
Good picks, but I don’t think Dark Souls qualifies as a metroidvania. Metroidvanias gate off parts of the map based on what abilities the player has/doesn’t have, whereas Dark Souls blocks off parts of the map simply because you’re missing a key. Also, Dark Souls doesn’t really have ability power-ups with the exception of acquiring the Lordvessel.
20 screens down this page, and barely over the halfway point with that - this made me chuckle. I think I have a thing or two to learn before I can aspire to “lengthy”. ;)
I’m playing Last Spell right now, isometric base defense game. Lots of viable ways to play, but later missions become a slog if you don’t plan out hero builds. A run takes 5-10 hours, but rounds take 20 minutes. Emphasis on crowd control and positioning.
Darkest Dungeon is nice if you want a break from isometric stuff, dungeon crawler, emphasis on team combat and resource management.
Creeper World III if you want to try RTS style, lots of community maps.
Tactical Breach Wizards, Come in through a window, throw everyone else out the window. Silly, but fun.
Another good one that’s more recent is Triangle Strategy. Positioning is important. Great story. Very similar to FFT but FFT is better overall. Still a great game and more modern.
