The franchise is very much split in gameplay style between the 2D and 3D entries. Generally the 2D games are much more highly rated, but there are good 3D games (and not-so-good 2D games) too. Here’s a list of what’s worth checking out of each:

2D The original trilogy from the Genesis (found in various Genesis collections and Sonic Origins) Sonic Advance trilogy (GBA) Sonic Rush (DS) Sonic Mania (any modern console and PC)

3D Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 (Steam, modern consoles MAY have digital copies) Sonic Colors (most easily accessible through recent remaster on PC and modern consoles) Sonic (X Shadow) Generations (just remade everywhere) Sonic Frontiers (haven’t tried it myself but heard it’s alright)

Sonic fan for more than two decades here! It’s always great to see more people interested in the franchise!

I would say that maybe it would be good to start with Sonic Generations (or Sonic x Shadow Generations if you can afford it, which is the same but with the Shadow The Hedgehog story as an extra), so you get familiar with the gameplay of both classic and modern games, have a sense of where it’s going and decide whether to go ahead or not.

I see that your interest is more focused on the characters and their dynamics, fantastic! the best part of the franchise in my opinion!. In that sense I would say that your best option to go deeper after Sonic Generations would be the mythical Adventure saga (Adventure 1 and Adventure 2). They are the games in which much more emphasis was put on the characters and the story.

Already after this and if you are hooked is that I recommend that you play the classics. You can play Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins (although you can also emulate the Mega Drive games), and then there is Sonic Mania. Why not start with the classics? Because they are very much of their time: pure gameplay, simple and not so deep story, but very fun to play!

You talk about games, but let me recommend you to read the IDW Comics in a complementary way. They are REALLY good! If I remember correctly, one of the artists on the comics, Evan Stanley, worked on The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, and the story of the game plays out very similar to how the Comics read. It’s also where you’ll find the most depth in the characters (and you’ll encounter the best story arc EVER written for the franchise, EVER).

To sum up:

  1. Sonic Generations (Or Sonic x Shadow Generations)
  2. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2
  3. Sonic Origins (Which are Sonic 1, CD, 2, 3 & Knuckles)
  4. Sonic Mania
  • Extra: IDW’s Sonic comics.

Good luck and have fun!

KotActually,

As another long-time Sonic fan, this is the perfect path of recommendation! Sonic/Shadow Gens is a perfect way to open the door to the world.

Using Adventure 1+2 as a journey into the narratives of Sonic is perfect!

My Picks…

Deus Ex (So many games try to be this and fail)

Cyberpunk (This one eventually measured up)

Alpha Centauri (Innovation mixed with familiarity and setting)

Fallout 2 (they’re all good. Fallout 2 is special)

Kotor (Star Wars story telling in a beautiful way)

Baldur’s Gate 2 and 3 (I’m stunned that 3 was a worthy successor)

Homeworld (One of the World’s truly beautiful games)

cletuspolybius,

I remember trying the demo to Homeworld when I was a kid, it came with one of those old school PC GAMER demo CDs. I think I was too young to understand how to play it effectively, but still loved it because I found the ambience of the experience so memorizing while hyper-cozy. Would you say it she’s well as something worth going back and playing now, and what of the sequel(s)?

essell,

I still repplay now and then, there’s no game like it.

Sadly the sequals failed to capture the grace of the original, though I’ve not tried 3 yet.

Blackmist,

Phantom Liberty is where Cyberpunk becomes a masterpiece.

Oh forgot. Best multiplayer game ever has to be Counter Strike 1.6, CS:GO and potentially CS2 in a few years.

Sounds like the solo experience isn’t great. Unless you’re okay with getting matched with randos, I guess you’d better bring exactly three players?

Rai,

Ugh I just wish it was designed for two players, so I can just play with my partner.

I played the demo a few weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

theangriestbird,

yeah? which parts stuck out to you?

MyDarkestTimeline01,

I enjoyed that the game seemed to try and make it so that every play style felt equal. Stealth archer didn’t seem like “easy mode”. The visuals while not the peak of fidelity, were very interesting to look at. The world building drew me in quickly, and kept my attention. In the end it succeeded where a demo should, it made me want to get the game.

Long time from fan, it’s super frustrating to see 2 completely multiplayer centric games in a row. 0 interest, don’t even use summons and play souls offline to keep out invaders.

homicidalrobot, do games w What games are just objective masterpieces?

I see Outer Wilds here but not Nioh 2, so I’m posting about Nioh 2.

Soulsian adventure with ninja gaiden blood, extremely high amount of endgame content, wild depth of character building, lots of avenues to increase your character’s power with many “correct answers” to the question of “how should I make my dude stronger”. Dropped a while before the most recent push for graphical fidelity with AI upscaling/antialiasing so it actually runs well on a large majority of steam hardware surveys machines.

It’s hard early on, but provides the player with tons of options when it comes to progressing through stages and bosses, flexible movesets for each class of weapon and access to potent tools like Gun and turning into an enemy that killed you a dozen times the first time you saw it briefly. The endgame goes beyond replaying through the game into dungeons made of fragments of the stages and some more unique maps (The Abyss). There’s a hefty amount of individual bosses to learn, and incentive to do some of the more fun fights in the game multiple times - a lot of which do not require a run back through a stage to get to them. The game does itself a service by breaking up gameplay into chunks with a world map you launch missions from, some of which are just a singular straight up boss fight.

BlameTheAntifa,

Nioh 2 is one of my favorite soulslikes, but falls short of masterpiece in my opinion due to the repeatedly recycled levels.

homicidalrobot,

Have you played the mainline souls titles? The NG+ system in Nioh 2 leads out into new unique maps (The abyss) rather than being the same game with revamped enemy placement and health nine times lol.

Prey, System Shock 2, Outer Wilds, and Undertale are fully-realized microcosms where the primary game is unfolding the complex origami of the setting. All of them absolutely beautiful to experience.

Do you think Return of the Obra Dinn would belong alongside these or is that game too flawed by comparison? I ask because I myself am not sure.

Oh, actually Disco Elysium would fit right in here as well as a “fully-realized microcosms where the primary game is unfolding the complex origami of the setting”.

@Zoomboingding@lemmy.world avatar

Haven’t actually played these two but from what I gather, they definitely fit the list!

ZephyrXero, (edited ) do games w Looking to get into Sonic games

Sonic 2 for the Genesis is my favorite game of all time. So I’d suggest starting with that one, personally. First Sonic was good too, but the second game refined the controls and made some small quality of life improvements. Then Sonic 3 + Knuckles and Sonic Mania are also excellent.

The 3D Sonics have been pretty hit or miss though. The controls are dumbed down and not nearly as tight as the classic 2D ones, although Frontiers was a step in the right direction.
