AceFuzzLord, do games w What are your favorite "gotta go in blind" games?

I feel like the obvious answer would be something like Fallout New Vegas, DLCs as well (especially the DLCs) or any visual novel games like Song of Data or the Danganronpa series.

Though for non-obvious answers, gonna say Brok the Investigator. Story driven with changing how you play affecting the ending you get. Non-obvious because I don’t see a ton of hype around it, even though there’s a cool looking DLC being developed.

Edit:

Forgot to add just about any puzzle game to the list. I watched someone play a puzzle game (Baba Is You) roughly 4-5 years ago and picked it up last spring. Just long enough for me to remember almost none of the solutions. Definitely much more fun that way. Same reason I loved Portal 2 back when I got it on xbox. Didn’t have a clue what would happen or what the puzzle solutions were.

I believe Cyberpunk 2077 is a fantastic experience going in blind.

Especially Phantom Liberty. I went in blind, made decisions, lived to regret them, fucked up everything, and loved every minute of it.

RixMixed,

Playing through Phantom Liberty now. So far it’s a breath of fresh air in a save I’ve been playing on and off since launch.

KombatWombat,

There’s a couple of quests that have a time limit, and it’s easy to not be aware since all the others can be completed whenever. I only knew beforehand because I read about it, and I’m glad I did, because letting them unintentionally expire has really bad outcomes.

Also I got a mod for infinite respecs. Otherwise I would worry about wasting finite consumable points and never spend them.

Lemminary, (edited ) do games w Guys, what did you buy during the Steam autumn sale?

I got all the cheap classics I had been playing with an eyepatch and a peg leg years ago. I’m especially excited about Magicka 2 to play with friends. My nephew is gonna love them!

Renacles, do games w What are your favorite "gotta go in blind" games?

I’m gonna go with Skyrim, the more unoptimized and aimless your playthrough is, the more fun you’ll have.

superkret,

Just started playing Skyrim for the first time last week.
My character is optimized for ending fights before they begin – by liquifying the opponent’s noggin’ with one swing of her 2-handed warhammer.
Other than that, she travels the world collecting ingredients to cook, brew and smith stuff with.
I suspect that’s not an optimal build, but it’s fun.

Renacles,

Perfect, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Journey. You can get it on PlayStation, iOS, steam (on sale for $5 atm) and epic. It is 2-3 hours short and not very challenging, but it does look absolutely stunning and has a very beautiful gameplay mechanic that you better find out for yourself. IMO it is one of the best games of all time and one that really demonstrates what the medium is capable of.

Suck_on_my_Presence,

spoilerGosh this one makes me cry every time

SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE,

I wish someone had told me what Journey was about so I could have avoided it. I went in blind and didn’t enjoy it at all. It was a cool concept but it wasn’t for me.

gcheliotis,

That is odd that nobody could tell this wouldn’t be for you @SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE

Rai,

I fucking loved it and cried.

Tap for spoilerThe person I matched up with was a 10/10. I went in blind but I knew it would match me with someone. I found them right away and they stayed with me the whole game. My partner got a person who dropped out, then restarted. Got another person… speedrunner. Tried once more and got someone who dropped out after an hour. Got another person they finished with, super frustrated. They did not have my experience.

Juvyn00b,

Thank you for this. Just recently picked up and played through twice Gris and Neva. Even though they’re short as well I really find myself loving the visuals, gameplay and the atmosphere created by these games.

@mp3@lemmy.ca avatar

When I struggle to find a new game to play, I just go through my backlog. The difficult part is to get started, get used to the controls, get settled in the story. Once you’re in, it’s not too hard to pick it up when you have some spare time.

Omori and Disco Elysium

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I actually think an argument could be made for Disco Elysium not being one of these games actually. I’ve seen people bounce off it because they went in with the wrong expectations. The game doesn’t really market itself correctly: it claims to be an isometric RPG and a detective game, but it could be argued the game is actually neither. Also lots of people miss out on a lot because they weren’t aware of the fail-forward design principle.

Hugin,

Yeah I decided to run away when asked to pay the bill. Failed the roll and while jumping and giving a double bird to the manager crashed into and old lady in a wheelchair. Manager was so upset he gave me a huge discount on the bill.

10/10 would play again.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

And that’s very deliberate! There are a couple of key rolls very very early that have positive outcomes if you fail them. They’re supposed to teach the player that failure is okay. But it turns out many many people are too afraid of the dangerously red button and the low percentage number so they never even try in the first place, thus also missing the lesson.

Also that sequence you’re talking about is one of my favourites in the game, it’s so damn funny. Another classic failure is the ice-cop-hat-fuck-show.

It really is the best book I’ve ever played.

TheV2,

Although the trailer captures the essence of OMORI very well.

Because going blind Is the game

Soleos, do games w Anyone else bounce around from game to game with no clue what to play?

Sometimes you’re just craving something specific or need something a bit smaller scale instead of a massive AAA. After finishing Cyberpunk 2077, I bounced around from God of War to Assassin’s Creed Origins to Spiderman, and on and on, all great titles but just stopped after a few hours… the game that finally grabbed me was an indie from a few years ago called Crying Suns.

If you want a small game with killer mechanics and that you won’t feel like you’re abandoning after a few hours, try Into The Breach

Crying Suns is really cool. Neat to see someone else who got hooked in the wild.

Toneswirly, do games w Anyone else bounce around from game to game with no clue what to play?

I go through phases like this, and its best to try other hobbies for awhile. When you feel that drive to play again, you will know.

paddirn, do games w Anyone else bounce around from game to game with no clue what to play?

I’ve been doing that here lately, just bouncing from game to game to game. Despite having hundreds of games in my Steam library, just feeling burnt out I think. Trying to move back to my unloved boardgames more to switch it up some. Sometimes you don’t need to force it, take a break and find something else to do for awhile until the interest comes back.

wirelesswire,

This was me, too. Over the past few years, I noticed I was having less and less fun with games, and was getting bored with them more quickly, even good ones that are right up my alley. I ended up starting a new hobby (gunpla) and couldn’t be happier. I still game some, but only a small fraction of what I used to.

teft, do games w Anyone else bounce around from game to game with no clue what to play?
@teft@lemmy.world avatar

Play Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s enormous. It’s difficult and the turn based combat is something you’ll have to get used to but it’s incredibly fun and deep.

I’ve put 1300 hours into the game because if you get bored you can just start a different character and try the story from their perspective. There are dozens of ways to complete every encounter.

MentalEdge, (edited ) do games w Anyone else bounce around from game to game with no clue what to play?
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

The bouncing around isn’t a bad thing.

In fact, if anything, I try to be sensitive to when I start to burn out on a game, and when that happens I avoid playing until the desire is really strong again.

Sometimes looking for something to play means having a LARGE number of false starts before I find the thing, but I make a note of not trying a bunch of similar games whenever something isn’t scratching the itch. I make each attempt with something very different.

And coming back to a game can take years.

That’s kind why you need a TON of games if you don’t want to take breaks from gaming entirely, because otherwise the medium just doesn’t have enough variety to keep the human brain engaged.

You should try shorter games, and completely ignore whether something is “big” enough to be worth your time. The big stuff is what’s boring you right now, so don’t waste time on trying to force the enjoyment.

Plus, if you’re restricting yourself to stuff that achieves critical acclaim, you’re limiting yourself to games everyone likes. That means you’re probably missing some stuff only you and people like you would like.

Not all good things are enjoyed by everyone universally, some things are just for a subset of people.

Gerudo, do games w Anyone else bounce around from game to game with no clue what to play?

This was me. I eventually bounced around games and tried Satisfactory, a game type I never thought I’d like. Now it’s my new meth and daddy needs his fix.

DoucheBagMcSwag, do games w Anyone else bounce around from game to game with no clue what to play?

I used to do that until I started Persona 5 Royal. I’ve been playing it nonstop with 150 hours in. I’m almost at the end and it will be the first RPG that I will finish (I didn’t even finish Chrono Trigger)
