Silvia, do gaming w What are some of your LEAST favorite game mechanics?
@Silvia@lemmy.world avatar

Quick-time events but SPECIFICALLY the ones that give you way too little time to react. Like, I never mind them too much, especially the ones in the Yakuza series, but I remember there was this game on the Wii called Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings that would throw these inputs WAYY too fast at you.

Lowbird,

I like them sometimes, but there should ALWAYS be a way to turn them off, for people who don’t have fast reflexes or have problems with their hands, etc.

Euro Truck Simulator/American Truck Simulator

It quickly just becomes a virtual road trip simulator, and as someone who generally enjoys driving and road trips its very chill

lemillionsocks, do gaming w How many steam deck folks are here and what are you playing?

Not a steamdeck user but a linux pc gamer so solidarity. Currently playing RE2 and Like a dragon Ishin.

I'm not a big fan of fishing mechanics, they're usually shallow "press button at random signal, get a random prize" mechanics.

Also escort missions where the NPC being escorted does not understand that it should protect its own life. I don't mind repeating a mission due to my own mistakes, but I don't want to do it because some AI went potato.

nah man fishing mini games are THE SHIT

it’s not about gameplay it’s about vibes It’s just so calming

AngularAloe, do gaming w What are some of your LEAST favorite game mechanics?

Combo attacks - I’m not coordinated to hit the buttons in order fast enough. I tried Black Desert when it was free and this was the dealbreaker for me, though it wasn’t the only thing that bugged me about the game.

bionicjoey, do gaming w Is this a fine place to talk about table top RPGs?

There’s “rpg” on both lemmy.ml and lemmy.ca.

Elite Dangerous in VR. I can really disconnect from the real world and just enjoy being a space-pirate bounty hunter.

  • Excessive grinding or padding in a game just for the sake of it or for microtransaction reasons.
  • Microtransaction and pay-to-win models in full price $70 games...
  • Overuse of Quick time events Press E to dodge etc etc
  • Escort missions when developers want to pad their game out
  • Terrible stealth mechanics when an enemey spots me when im standing still in a bush from the other side of the map
sverit,

Yeah, the older I get, the more “I don’t have time for 10h grinding a day” I get. Just let me play a complete game in peace please.

smikwily,

I decided a few years ago that I play games to have fun and if a game isn’t fun, I don’t play it. I don’t have much time these days to dedicate gaming, so I want to enjoy the time I do.

I’ve had a few I’ve really enjoyed until I hit some really terrible game mechanic or even a boss encounter I can’t get past. I’ll usually give it a few days/tries, but I’ll flat out just bail and uninstall a game if it is causing me too much stress.

sverit,

Same here, life is too short to struggle ingame :)

No Man’s Sky is a good mix of nice scenery, low stress, and engaging without requiring a lot of mental capacity that can be comforting.

StrahdVonZarovich, do gaming w Modern Pokemon games hold your hand too much.
@StrahdVonZarovich@beehaw.org avatar

When I was a kid I was super into pokemon. I loved playing the games and they stood out to me for one reason: they were challenging. My first game was Black, and I got stuck on the first gym leader for a few days, but when I figured it out it was immensely satisfying. I would hit roadblock, I would struggle, and eventually I overcame it. Then my friend introduced me to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and it got even harder. I honestly think that the final dungeon of Explorers of Time made me smarter or something. It forced my dumbass child brain to think outside the box and find solutions on my own.

Then Pokemon X and Y released, and it was the most stupidly easy game ive ever played. And it kept getting easier after that. Add onto that the worsening quality and I stopped caring about Pokemon. My friend who is really into Pokemon hasnt bought a new game in years, he only plays Romhacks or replays the old games.

Anyone of my simulation/management games. Whether it’s running a hospital, creating an auto manufacturing assembly line or helping some brave adventurers find oxygen I’m always more at peace with a single player goal driven experience.

Deestan, do gaming w What are some of your favorite game mechanics?

Creative allowance. Even if it makes the game “unbalanced”.

Just Cause 2 with the grappling hook you could attach one end to a statue and one to a truck.

Grand Theft Auto 3 was the first game where I realized I could complete an assassination by stealing a police car, use the swarm of police cars following me as a “net” to trap my target’s car so he couldn’t drive away, and then blowing up the pile of cars with a grenade.

Rimworld where I can create a settlement of nudist vampires trading beautiful wooden sculptures for slaves to feed on.

The Sims 3 of course.

From the Depths, Minecraft, Space Engineers, Valheim also to a large degree.

pcouy,

The last two Zelda games (especially totk) lets the player get really creative as well

Double jumping. Something about double jumping just always feels really liberating. It’s such a strange concept as well, with no analogue in the real world.
