It’s working on Linux? Was it straightforward to setup? I’ve given up buying games on steam because of their terrible Linux support, and I’d seen a lot of comments about the steam deck version sucking, so I’d assumed the Linux version wasn’t great. But maybe the deck hardware is the issue?
I’m not criticising Linux gaming - I know basically nothing about it. Just my own experience over the last year, where I’ve tried buying and playing a couple of games and had difficulty getting them working, tried different Proton versions etc. But maybe I should be trying the window versions? My question was just innocent curiosity, but looking at my downvoters I’ve obviously touched a nerve!
I’m not very experienced with Linux gaming, and the last game I tried (xcom) crashed consistently, and reading forums people were suggesting using certain Proton versions and other stuff. I eventually gave up. I also got uncharted:LOT refunded because I couldn’t get it working in Linux. So if it’s “click install and click play” the great! It is straightfoward.
Beyond selecting a proton version it was no more difficult to set up than any windows game. Deck hardware I’ve heard issues with, but I’m not surprised. The deck is essentially a mid level right from about 8 years ago. The remaster struggles on my 3090. I was finally able to get 60fps after tweaking graphical settings for a while, but none of that was because of Linux.
Out of curiosity, what’s your install path for the game? Some games don’t cooperate with Program Files or Program Files (x86), so if it’s in there, try installing it to a different location and see if the problem persists.
Pretty much only games that were made pre-permission restrictions on Program Files because they try to write to the install folder. I think that was added around XP/Vista. Anything remotely recent shouldn’t have this problem (especially if it’s the default install directory).
(The error code 0xc0000096 (Privileged instruction) also doesn’t indicate this at all but hey, there’s been weirder cases of errors caused by completely unrelated seeming conditions.)
I completely uninstalled steam after moving all of my games to a different drive through steams settings. Then installed steam itself into a c:/games folder and then moved back over the games I wanted on my SSD.
The Bioshock games are really fun in a very dark way. They are incredibly unique—I haven’t played anything else quite like them. Personally, I liked the first two better than the third one. The first two take place underwater, which sort of creeped me out from the get-go. The third is in a city in the sky.
If you like factory designing games, I can recommend anything by Zachtronics.
They’re all esoteric programming/automation type puzzle games, and they all have their own unique solitaire games built-in for whenever you get tired of the main game.
My personal favourites are SpaceChem - scifi molecule factories - and Opus Magnum - steampunk alchemical molecule factories. Something about the molecules just works for me, don’t know why. Plus the Opus Magnum solitaire game is really unique and fun, and it has a user-made level feature, so you can keep playing.
Last Call BBS is a collection of minigames they made as their final release before shutting up shop, so it’s a lot more casual than the others, but a lot of fun.
I love BGS games. For me, other than Starfield, the only issue with them is the dated graphics and gameplay, but the Oblivion remaster certainly fixes that! If anyone already loves classic oblivion, the ramaster is definitely for you, and if you loved Skyrim, but oblivion was too dated to get into it, the remaster is also for you. Not everyone likes bgs rpgs though
I can appreciate the personal part you added regarding losing faith. I left catholicism in my teens. Too many inconsistencies, too much abuse of power. It started by questioning how multiple christianities could have such different rules, followed by learning how most religion is abrahamic and even more diverse in interpretation, to finally saying fuck all this.
I got FC5 in 2020 and it became hard to stomach. It felt like a real potential reality of the US that year. Cults, vehement religious figures, gun fetish, and a classic Americana setting. The prior titles were all far away, imaginary lands offering even a small degree of dissociation. FC5 was just home. I’d relate it to Harry Potter villains in the sense that yeah, of course we know Voldemort is evil, but Umbridge is the most hated character. Not because she’s worse, but because we know a real-life Umbridge personally.
FC6 hit me kinda hard in a similar way. I got into it about a year ago, not long after the israel/Palestine conflict flared up. There’s a ton of genocidal themes there.
