JelloBrains, do piracy w Trying to download/export, and convert 1000ish kindle books to get out of amzns ecosystem
@JelloBrains@kbin.social avatar

You don't mention how they read these books, is it a Kindle e-ink device, a Fire Tablet, or some other way? I ask because the shitification has started, they have a new file format they deliver to devices that are capable of KFX. That's anything made after the 1st Paperwhite e-ink Kindle. The new KFX file is not crackable with current NoDRM/DeDRM tools that can be found on GitHub.

As for FOSS, Koreader can be found on github and is installable on most Kobo devices as well as Remarkable devices if going with e-ink, and can be installed on android devices through F-Droid or manual install. Always read the install instructions to make sure you understand the install procedure on e-ink devices.

DaCrazyJamez,

Currently android tablet with kindle app. Uses windows desktop to organize library (which the latest update forces you to do via cloud)

I'll send you to an older post, here.

It's a hassle, but it works mostly, unless it's textbooks or books made for the Indian market. Mobile read has info about the changes, here and here.

It basically involves installing an android emulator to windows and using old Kindle for Android apps as the workaround, but Amazon can stop that whenever they feel like it.

exu,

KFX up to Kindle for PC 1.26 can be converted with the KFX input plugin.

CTdummy, do piracy w Having a hard time settling on a VPN

I’ll see if I bookmarked it but there was a site with a bunch of VPNs listed with their privacy/functionality compared. Using it as a reference I ended up on Mullvad VPN. Super simple set up for the basic stuff with some more functionality under the hood if you need. iOS and windows app for quick set up too. My experience with them has been only positive so far.

theangriestbird, (edited )

Idk if this was the article you were thinking of, but I used this article from torrentfreak and also settled on Mullvad. I’ve been subscribed for years, they’re great and pretty cheap.

Edit: I reread your post and realized that you’re looking for a VPN with port forwarding. Frankly, I trust Mullvad enough at this point that if they removed port forwarding as a feature, then I assume that feature is probably just a bad idea for VPNs in general.

wolfshadowheart,
@wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

I need a VPN with port forwarding because I want to host game servers behind a CG/NAT. So there's at least one reason why they should still be featured.

DogMuffins,

I think hosting something and wanting inbound traffic through a VPN is a pretty unusual use case.

DonnieDarkmode, do piracy w 5th Edition D&D books?

This is from the community on Reddit. You should be able to grab the torrent file for whichever 5e book you want from there. I would also recommend 5e . tools like the other commenters, even as just a separate reference; as a DM I’ve found it way easier to pull things up quickly, even if I legally own the book that has whatever spell/mob I’m looking for haha.

Is there a good FOSS e-reader platform? I was considering moving from nook TO kindle, but now you’re giving me pause.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

PineNote is one of the only ones I can think of with an e-ink display.

fmstrat,

KOReader. Even runs on jailbroken Kindles

This might be weird, but Just Cause 3. When I was playing it a lot, I would just stop and look around at sunset and marvel at the view.

Redo11, do zapytajszmer w domowa drukarka i skaner - co polecacie?

Omijaj szerokim łukiem HP i Canon. Drukarki są tanie, ale jest na to powód. Epson jest spoko, ale najlepiej kupić ecotank. Wlewasz jaki tusz chcesz i płacisz grosze w porównaniu do kartridżów HP. I tak, 300zł to raczej mało, jeżeli nie chcesz się użerać ze złodziejstwem.

I played Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart recently because it was available free on PS+ and it is the most gorgeous game I have ever played in my life.

The graphical capabilities are astounding, the aesthetic is pleasing, and there is charm out the wazoo. You can’t look anywhere without seeing something interesting making use of all that fancy graphic tech. I kept it installed despite 100%ing it just to mess around with the photo mode.

EremesZorn,

I almost picked it up off GMG, but I’m really not a platformer guy.

Squid777, do gaming w I understand cosmetic DLCs, but cosmetic "battle passes" are bad
@Squid777@kbin.social avatar

I say this as someone who doesn't like MTX, but I've never understood how optional cosmetics ever factor into whether a game is "complete". The only way they could be seen as an important part of the game is if you play games to play dressup. Which I get if you're playing a fashion designer style game or a game thats almost purely social, but in the majority of games they don't fucking matter at all. How do people get so bent out of shape about them?

Kaldo,
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

The only way they could be seen as an important part of the game is if you play games to play dressup.

You really shouldn't be but I feel you'd be surprised how many people, especially MMORPG players, care about this. I personally play GW2 a lot and since there's no gear treadmill unlocking cosmetics is one of the main goals you can actually do there, to show off your accomplishments or hard work. Ofc it's not the only thing keeping players engaged but it is a major part of it.

Besides, if it didn't matter to players then it wouldn't be monetized as much in the first place. So whenever I see this argument "well its just cosmetics so it doesnt matter:", I get kinda frustrated because obviously it matters, obviously it works which is why it's still a thing to monetize so much.

Squid777,
@Squid777@kbin.social avatar

I'm not arguing it doesn't matter, I'm arguing it shouldn't matter.

  • Death’s Door just a stunning game in regards to art style and music/sound design. Really creative boss battles too that never felt stale. Can be challenging.
  • Omno very chill game with a really cool vibe and music. No combat to speak of. Short though.
  • Pseudoregalia PS1-style graphics but oddly gorgeous. It’s a metroidvania of sorts with some of the best movement mechanics in recent memory. Highly recommend a look at least.
  • A Short Hike really cute game that is all about exploration. As the title suggests, not a very long game. On the Switch version there was a toggle to turn off a graphics filter that is reminiscent of the 3DS. I personally liked it, but I have not checked the Steam version for the same option.
  • Sea Of Stars releases on 29 Aug, but there is a demo available. Between the gorgeous 16bit inspired graphics, the lighting effects, and the incredible soundtrack this would be an instant buy for me if it weren’t hitting Game Pass on day one! I may still plunk down on a physical copy. Leaning towards Switch, assuming it plays as well there as other platforms.

These are maybe not what some would consider beautiful, but I love the variation in art styles and how they can be beautiful while either being simplistic or retro-inspired. All but Sea Of Stars were very cheap during the Steam Summer sale or in a Fanatical bundle that may or may not still be available right now.

skyrim, i have loads of pictures just of the sky in that game

also hogwarts legacy has some very beautiful locales throughout the game, and hogwarts itself is wonderfully done

lustyargonian,

I played Skyrim AE right after Horizon Forbidden West and I kept finding the simplicity and visual clarity of the game to be so damn beautiful. The game has the right amount of clutter, right amount of volumetric fogs and right amount of texture detail to be easy on eyes and believable as a consistent and functioning world.
