JadenSmith, do astronomy w Size Comparison: Pluto and Australia

What is Pluto doing so close to Australia?

That shouldn’t be allowed. Someone tell it to go back to it’s usual orbit, this is not on.

makyo,

You didn’t know they had a thing? It lasted until Australia found out Pluto wasn’t really a planet.

Agent641,

Fuck off Pluto, we’re full!

It’s their payback for that whole “clears its orbit” business.

intensely_human,

They’re using it to cool up Australia

That’s an avocado pit and you know it

algorithmae, do gaming w Does anyone here play tf2 or dark and darker?

Just keep searching for TF2 community servers, not all of them will be that toxic. Some really don’t care about anything, as long as you don’t mic spam or grief. There are some furry ones that will definitely be LGBT friendly, if you don’t mind that.

rosethornRangerTTV,

even if the servers are queer friendly, I haven’t found one yet that doesn’t allow things like ableist language. They only feel marginally better with the tradeoff of smaller games

Thief 1 - 3.

HarriPotero,
@HarriPotero@lemmy.world avatar

I must admit I’ve never seen or played these. They might be a bit too new for me. I listened to an interview with the game designer on the retro hour a while back. It sounded intriguing.

Would you care to give an elevator pitch on why these are must-play?

Count042,

The open world concepts for each level.

The story is found and told through other characters. A lot of the story is shown rather than told.

Thief 3 has the most horrific level design ever in the orphanage. A game review had a review (really more of a worship piece) just on that one level. (I think this is the review: pcgamer.com/journeying-into-the-cradle-in-thief-d…)

The stealth mechanics actually require stealth and are multivariate. Most stealth games stealth systems now are actually less advanced.

They’re great games.

Jeanschyso,

They invented sound bouncing off walls as a mechanic to make Thief. Truly a trendsetter

Theharpyeagle,

God I remember having to actually disable enemy AI to get through The Cradle as a kid.

Thief 1 and 2 have incredible community made mods that completely overhaul the graphics and make it quite a beautiful game. Said community is still alive and well over on the TTLG forums, making fan missions for the game to this day (including the highly regarded Black Parade, which is basically an entire game made in the dark engine).

The only stealth games I’ve played that come anywhere close are Dishonored 1 and 2 (which, unsurprisingly, had a lot of Looking Glass veterans working on them).

agent_nycto,

I came here to say this! These games are highly underrated. Amazing story and world building, actually having to be sneaky even with low level enemies, amazing music, these were always my top faves.

Not that old, but Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (2004).

I have not played that many games, but I have yet to find such an amazing action adventure combat mechanics.

There is a trailer on Youtube that does the system justice - everything can be done in-game, at your will, and it’s not even that hard. Context matters, and it’s so rewarding chaining different combos to plow through them like butter.

Those basic enemies are meant to be fucked up in every possible way, the environments often provide ample varieties of opportunities.

Then there are stronger enemies and bosses, which don’t let you mop them around, so you have to fight them face to face.

The game itself is decent, there are some bad platforming parts, but thanks to time rewind they can be beaten.

The biggest issue is very low native resolution, and the game kept crashing on my Steam Deck. I will try it again, because I want to relive that combat again.

PraiseTheSoup,

All three Prince of Persia games in this trilogy: The Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and The Two Thrones are some of my fondest memories with my original Xbox. Amazing games and I finished all three, but I’ve never been able to get into another PoP title since.

edit: a word

msage, (edited )

I installed Two Thrones, saw the speed kill, instantly removed the game.

Was it comparable to WW?

PraiseTheSoup,

I can’t really say as I played these games around launch nearly 20 years ago and don’t remember much.

Deus Ex is amazing, if you can get passed the aged graphics, it’s a masterclass in storytelling and game design.
