I’m not paying 80€ for this generic music.

50€ for the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 soundtrack is a much much better investment.

SolidShake,

Depends on what kind of music you like?

“Wrong direction” sums up my anger towards everything FromSoft.

Two Soulslike games I really enjoyed though, are Tunic, and Another Crab’s Treasure. Both are generally pretty rewarding of exploration, but also tightly guide you at the beginning. I honestly just don’t feel like FromSoft is very fair when it comes to early exploration. One path utterly destroys you and has no reward at the end.

CCAirWater,

Tunic is super cute! I haven’t played the crab one, but I’ve seen vids. Maybe one day I’ll pick it up.

As for your point, that’s part of the fun for me (as outlined in the post). When I played Diablo and Diablo II as a kid, I’d always have to see every inch of the map. In Elden Ring, it was always my goal to explore any corner or dungeon or castle that I could see. The stories are all good and fine, but for me, it’s the escapist dream of being a knight witch that can enter a big castle and completely dominate the occupants. Like a one-person siege machine. And if I can do that while pulling huge spells for area effect, I’m even happier. Just hiking up stone steps, throwing fire tornados or meteors… The dream!

I do wish the spells in every game I’ve played were more epic, ya know? My dream game would be to throw a literal tornado at a castle and have the baddies be smart enough to run for cover instead of getting hit. More of a dynamic sort of fighting but with massive spells. The only critique I have of fromsoft is the stagnant worlds. Just a dude standing in the middle of a courtyard, waiting to get shreked is a little bland. I’d love to see a castle that operates as a castle instead of a bunch of waiting-to-die group of baddies.

Katana314, do games w I just realized the only way to get new gamers to care about Jak is to release a "remastered" version, which sucks.

My first PlayStation was a PS3, and thankfully, around then they were still releasing a number of ported “trilogies”.

Even though mine was not a backwards compatible model, I was also able to play digital versions of the Fatal Frame series, which is sadly now pretty much inaccessible.

I never played Jax, but I saw an analysis of its vector-based facial animation, where there were few enough vertices for animators to directly tweak; and it does feel like a nostalgic way to make cartoony, expressive faces.

contactecho, do games w Doom the dark ages...

Your opinion is going to depend on what you’re looking for in a doom game. It isn’t quite like DOOM 2016. It’s less like DOOM eternal. No dashes, less aerial combat, and less of the rock paper scissors gameplay.

It’s geared more towards “stand and fight” gameplay. It’s still run and gun, but more about parrying and staying in the enemy’s face. The shield has interesting play associated with that.

If the atmosphere is what you’re looking for, it actually is closer to Eternal. You’re present for the fall of a planet, so the atmosphere is functionally the same.

If you are for the lore, it is lore rich and rather engaging.

All that said, if you can wait for a sale, go for it. It feels like a DOOM game, but it’s not what everybody expects in a DOOM game.

Jax,

It feels like a DOOM movie. I was genuinely excited for the cutscenes because I thought something actually cool would happen, only to get sucked into to yet another railroad dragon section, even worse railroad mech section, or mission filled with ‘kill enemies to break shields’.

Idk, the ‘stand and fight’ gameplay stopped being fun when I realized that 80% of the guns were just functionally worthless and parry spam + impaler would solve all, not some, all of my problems. For 20 hours. Of basically the same mission objectives over and over and over.

I’m just gonna go back to playing Eternal if I want DOOM. ID fucked up DOOM 3, again (IMO).

Edit: I’ve beaten every DOOM on nightmare. If Eternal had ammo economy issues (which is a hill I will die on, even the newbies I got into Eternal didn’t struggle with ammo) then Dark Ages has an overabundance problem. Why would I ever switch weapons when I have the ammo economy of Eternal on crack and switching weapons puts my shield down? Why play a DOOM game if not for all the different weapons to kill demons with?

That’s kinda all guns. Seems like ID wanted to please all those people who said they hate the “forced” weapon switching in Eternal and just made everything strong against anything.

Jax,

The only reason I say 80% is because you can still have fun using the super shotgun to kasplode demons even if it is the most pathetic super shotgun.

simple,

This is my biggest complaint now that I’m farther along. There genuinely isn’t much reason to switch weapons, especially with ammo so easy to get just by spamming melee. Since you can just stand in front of everybody and parry, range doesn’t matter at all.

I think people care about Jak, but Naughty Dog is constrained to marketing success and has to focus on their money makers Crash, Last of Us, and Uncharted, no?

I don't know what it is but it feels like i went from crashing like maybe once a week, to multiple times a day as time has gone on.

Make sure to disable all autosaves, disable quicksaves, and never save over an existing save. Something about Bethesda's save system has never quite worked properly when overwriting existing saves (which is how autosave and quicksave function), you have to force it to create new saves and manually delete the old ones yourself later.

After the remaster came out, I started replaying the original with a small modlist, and saw similar degradation in stability until I remembered to do that. Currently it'll crash if I've had the game open more than a couple of hours, so I just manually save often and restart the game any time I feel like it's been open for a while. It doesn't seem to be getting worse anymore so I think I'm in the clear.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Definitely taking this advice lol. The crashing has been killing my fun and I’m desperate to stop it. Especially since I’m so close to the end

Screen_Shatter, do games w 1st time Demon's Souls Player

Demons souls doesnt explain any fucking thing. Theres a lot that would take incredible effort to figure out on your own, I think they intended for it to take a community to get things figured out together.

Its been a really long time but I remember theres a ring in the first area that lets you have a lot more health while unkindled or whatever they call it in that one. Its sort of secret, I think just before the first boss in that area you drop down a hole into a room. For me at the time this was a major boon.

I also found it way easier to start as a spellcaster. Many traps and fights are easier from a distance or by using magic to bait enemies out so you can fight one on one and avoid group ambushes. There really is so much trial and error in this one, you are going to get blasted and have to memorize it all.

There are a lot of NPC phantoms that only appear with certain world tendencies, usually full white or full black. Its really a major bitch to get everything because of the effort to manipulate it. I made it through most of the game without even realizing what was happening. I do remember in the last area farming flying manta ray things and using black world tendency to get more souls so theres that if you get desperate. Good luck!

CCAirWater,

Thankfully I got that ring. The Cling Ring, I think it’s called? Super helpful!

I feel like I’m at least 30% through the game, if I had to guess. It’s a lot of fun, but much more brutally punishing compared to Bloodborne or especially Elden Ring. I still haven’t got a clue what the hell is really going on, but I look forward to manta rays!

zipzoopaboop, do games w Doom the dark ages...

I like both the previous games better. I miss executions, limited melee ammo feels awful, and the guns (at least first 3 i found so far) aren’t very satisfying. I won’t be continuing to play, game pass has had a killer month and if I want to keep playing doom I’ll go back to 2016 or eternal

Noerknhar, do games w Day 304 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games l've been playing

Bethesda is known for crashes that happen later in the game, due to memory leaking in now progresses save games. If I remember correctly, they had multiple issues with original Oblivion and even Skyrim where the save game would cause loading so much stuff into memory that there was little room left. Crappy memory cleaning then did the rest.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I know Fallout New Vegas and I believe 3 had the same issue. I’d have to assume it’s Gamebryo issue, or just something about the way Bethesda does the save system. I didn’t know Skyrim had this issue. I guess it’s a very faithful remaster, even in the parts I wish got left behind

Thanks for your posts.

Everything I’ve seen about oblivion remake says “wait for patches”

The new vegas ps3 comparison is rough. That was hilariously bad. Especially when your save was large you’d be 7 minutes for a load screen lmao

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

As someone who grew up with New Vegas on PS3 it’s definitely giving me flashbacks lol. I’m at 36 hours playtime and it’s not nearly as bad as I remember NV being but still, it’s a rough issue

ActuallyGoingCrazy,

Fwiw, I’ve played through almost the entire remaster and only started having issues towards the end, just a bit of typical Bethesda “let the modders fix it” Software save crashes.

I love reading people’s first time experience with these games.

Demon’s Souls was the last of the Souls games I played, and I thought it was hard still. The bosses aren’t as frenetic and complex as later titles, but the levels and the navigation is brutal. I still remember running back in that swamp over and over and over.

I also remember grinding out weapon upgrade materials in a cave for literal hours, because I didn’t see any other way to get enough.

CCAirWater,

I ain’t seen a swamp yet, oi vey. Unless you mean the lower latria area with the many faced centipede screaming monsters…? I hate swamp levels lol. I’ll face it when it comes though.

The person in latria was a huge pain to navigate for sure. I beat the mining level and giant dragon with minimal issue. Same for the tower knight, phalanx, and armor spider. But getting around some of the levels is super easy to get lost, I agree. I freaking love it though.

I need a pure glassstone? I think? To level up my mace again. The lizard stopped spawning! 😭

I never go in on the “builds” that I keep seeing recommended. Maybe that’ll punish me later, but I love just finding a good weapon and some epic spells and smash n burning my way through the monsters. Elden Ring was the best for that. Dual weild a staff and holy sword, I was unstoppable lol

Plus, that ending was so fire. I’m at the final boss on ng, but started Demon’s Souls lol

The_Picard_Maneuver,
@The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world avatar

It’s way more fun to make up your own build as you go, based on how you want to play anyway. Just be warned that the upgrade materials are really stingy after a certain point, so be a little selective with how many weapons you commit to.

…and you’ll know you’re in this swamp when you find it. Good luck!

CCAirWater,

Oh hopefully the mace will last till late game haha. Good lookin’ out tho! Thank you!

Style and aesthetic only go so far. The low poly counts and blurry textures will still drag it down for anyone not already enamoured with legacy 3D graphics.

Pixel art games seem to have much more longevity than early 3D

I’m a huge fan of Doom Eternal. It really proved what movement shooters are capable of.

Haven’t played Dark Ages yet, and I’m not super eager to play it.

I expected Dark Ages to be a middle ground of 2016 and Eternal, but it seems like they’re straying away from movement shooters with the ”stand and fight” tagline. That’s disappointing, because I feel like there’s so much more to explore with movement shooters. Just look at Ultrakill for example.

I will wait it out a bit. It still seems like a fun game. Next on my play list is Expedition 33.

I didn't want to deal with Glarthir this time so I just flat out refused and he took the matter into his own hands. This includes a big battle axe, to give you an idea.

Managed to steal a lot of money from him without having to actually do anything for him lol

Kellamity,

I’m the same, I couldn’t be bothered this time so I told him I wouldn’t help. Didnt know he was gonna do that, I feel guilty now. But I like to role play so hey it’s just more lore for my character

These graphics trends are basically the opposite for indie games. Look at Schedule 1 and STRAFTAT.

Zahille7,

Abiotic Factor, which is a new open world survival game based on a mix of og Half-Life and SCP, so the graphics and models look like they come from the 90s or early 2000s.

Hands of Necromancy (and pretty much all other GZDoom games for that matter) all look like they came right out of 1996 - with the exception of Selaco. That game is actually beautiful.

Going Medieval has a slight pixel/voxel look to it.

There’s also Ultracop, which I think is made by one person and also looks straight out of the 90s. It’s also only like $2 and it’s a decent time waster.

Pseudoregalia, Fly Knight, Lunacid, Verho, Dread Delusion, Nightmare Kart…

These are just from my own games list. I’m not sure why I even made this comment. Sort of a recommendations list I guess?
