MHW Iceborne is fun

Diablo Immortal on mobile is shit

supangle, do gaming w Got a Switch today, need some recommendations.

i cannot recommend any nintendo product since they are the by far the most evil company in gaming industry. you would be pretty much happy with metascore nintendo switch list. i would return switch and buy steam deck oled with a little bit more budget and pirate all nintendo products using steam deck. heck, most switch games runs better on steam deck than it is on switch.

This is a dude buying a gaming console for a kid, and he’s already bought it. I would chill a bit lol.

wizardbeard,

Wow, that’s certainly a take. How are they worse than Sony or fucking Microsoft? Microsoft was under IRS investigation at one point. They dragged thing out resulting in multiple millions of taxpayer money being wasted, ruined the professional careers of the lead names on the investigation, bribed politicians to cut so much funding from the IRS that another investigation of that scale is simply not possible, and bribed other politicians to sway laws in their favor to help make what they were investigated for much harder to pursue charges on.

Do you have any substantive shit that the other big names aren’t guilty of as well? I’d love to hear it!

lobut,

EA backs away slowly

Btw, we all love Valve and the Steam Deck but Valve ain’t clean either.

JustEnoughDucks,
@JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

No company at all is completely clean outside of some non profits and even then, most of them aren’t.

There is an orders of magnitude difference in anti-consumerism and bad practices between Nintendo, Activision, and EA vs Valve.

hugs his Switch and the many physical Switch games he owns

also hugs his Steam Deck

The two aren’t mutually exclusive nor does one random opinion on the internet a fact make.

OP asked for what specific games to get, not some anti-Nintendo rant.

Scrath,

How regularly do you use both of those devices?

I was eyeing the steam deck for its portability but I rarely would have reason to use it so I held off. Same for the switch.

When I’m at home I play on my desktop. When I’m not at home I’m mostly actively moving about or only waiting small periods of time which are not worth it to start gaming. The only reason I would have to really use them would be during vacations.

Matomo,

I’m in a position where I can’t access my desktop for a few months, and my Steamdeck is absolutely great for lazy couch gaming. It runs pretty much any game I play atm, and with some tweaking per game, the controls are almost always great.

But I also use my Switch from time to time. It’s a bit more portable, it’s a kind of “just works” device where I don’t need to worry about controls or tweaks, and Tears of the Kingdom runs significantly better than it ever did on my Steamdeck, last time I tried.

It sounds like a Switch would be the best option for your use case, if you’d have to pick one. Something the Switch does very well is being able to pause any game by just putting it in standby and not worrying about it. Makes it ideal to play in between doing other stuff.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

It’s a good point. I would say I don’t use them often enough to justify owning them, but I use them just enough to be okay with it. I go in spurts. I get on a Mario Maker kick and play a ton on the switch, and then I get on an emulation kick and load up a lot of retro stuff on the steam deck. But I have gone weeks or more without touching either.

darkmogool,

Holy shit. This is a terrible game recommendation.

Yakuza Like a Dragon.

It’s not Yakuza 0, that game was so much fun, the minigames were more interactive, and it only felt like a grind when shaking down Mr Shakedown, then putting money into upgrades.

Like a Dragon just feels slower, and more grinding. Story is cool, substories are amazing. But the minigames are less entertaining, and business management is as bad as Kiryus one.

I miss the cabaret so much

I’m getting super close to finishing cyberpunk 2077. I said that last week when I was at like 80 or so hours. But uhh 100 hours in now and I swear I’m really close this time lol.

I really wish they hadn’t released the game so early and hadn’t released so much advertising hype about the game. If the game released in a functional state I think it would have had the complete opposite reception.

If they were to have released the game this January or something and only advertised what is actually in the game, people would likely be praising it left and right. I thought the writing and quest design was a breath of fresh air. I loved how the game gave you agency to make your own decisions and made you think about the implications of all of your actions. Even if many of the decisions didn’t directly matter in the grand scheme of things, it allowed you to roleplay and at least feel like you were staying true to how your character would react in different situations.

I liked how there were so many twists and turns during the quests. Overall it felt like I was playing a completely different game compared to the couple hours I had tried at launch.

Edit: side note, Outer wilds is so good. Give it 5 years and maybe you’ll forget some of it lol!

Hazmatastic,

My first playthrough clocked in around 200 hours. Now, I still do almost everything but it’s faster. Only 150 hours now… About to wrap up playthrough number 5. And I’ll probably be coming back in a year for 6.

Can’t get into outer wilds though. Feel like I’m 50-60% through the game and I have no idea when or how to go where I think I need to. Took a break to play CP2077 run #4 and look where that got me

spiderman,

I loved how the game gave you agency to make your own decisions and made you think about the implications of all of your actions.

Cyberpunk 2077 (Pyramid Song mission)Exactly my thoughts after my actions left Judy leave Night city. Should not have killed Maiko. Made me wonder whether could I have saved Takamura too.

spiderman, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of April 14th

Clocked in around 45 hours in Cyberpunk 2077 and I think I might reach an ending in another 5 hours. I had good expectations for this game and this game is just way higher than my expectations.

Love the world building, the lore they are trying to build on side, references to Cyberpunk Edgerunners sometimes.

Ashen44, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of April 14th

new rimworld DLC came out and that has taken up all my time. I’ve got to admit I had a few doubts about this one compared to the others, but sure enough they did it again and made an absolute banger of an expansion and now I have to sink another couple hundred hours…

CharlesReed, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of April 14th

Managed to get all the campaign achievements for Ghostwire: Tokyo, including a really, really stupid RNG one. There's an extra mode called The Spider's Thread, but I don't think I'm going to focus on that anytime soon. I need a break from Tokyo lol.

I wanted something that wasn't very combat heavy next and picked Kona. For the most part it felt like Kholat meets The Painscreek Killings - a fun little detective walking sim that just lets you loose without really telling you where to go or what to do, all while taking place during a blizzard. I liked wandering around and trying to figure things out myself, and the narrator didn't seem too overbearing. I had a good time, up until the ending. It felt rushed and just kind of... happened. Like one moment you're going along in the forest looking for stuff, and then all of the sudden, here's an explaination for everything in a short scene! Now literally run to the end! Bye! I was hoping for something a little more drawn out.

I'm not really into soulslike games, but since Lies of P was on GamePass, I thought I might as well try it out. I'm actually having a good time playing it. I'm usually not great at soulslike since they can be frustrating, and I'm not a fan of "die in order to learn", but I'm making progress and the story is kind of interesting. I really like the atmosphere, very steampunk vibes. Some of the characters could have had a little more effort put into them, but that's a minor complaint overall.

Megaman_EXE,

You’ve just reminded me that I’ve wanted to try both ghostwire and lies of P on gamepass! I’m always so terrible and managing my time lol. I wish there was a calendar so we could see months in advance when a game will leave the service. It’s not so bad with short games. But the longer RPG’s are tough to finish in a month if you discover they’re leaving!

CharlesReed,

Absolutely, that's one of the reasons I try to mix up my gaming between longer games that I know will take me a while and short games I get through in a night. I knew Ghostwire would take me longer because it's open world (the main story itself is kind of short, but I'm a completionist who has to get everything collectible), and I figure Lies of P will take me a while just from dying and restarting a bunch.

I’ve been itching to play atomic heart ever since me and a friend tried the demo the other day. probably gonna pick it up when I get paid.

DdCno1,

It’s clunky, but not in an indearing eurojank way. Absolutely repulsive writing doesn’t help. I wouldn’t recommend it.

FeelThePower,

Awe, bummer. Thanks for the heads up though.

DdCno1,

If you’re interested in an Eastern European take on Bioshock/Half Life, try the Metro series instead, if you haven’t already.

If you want to play an equally fascinating and highly flawed Eurojank shooter that is actually endearing, play You Are Empty. It’s only available as abandonware and needs some tweaks to work on modern systems:

As far as I understand:

  • both Zeldas
  • Super Mario Maker 2
  • Super Mario Odysee
  • Splatoon
ConstableJelly,

Aw man, I forgot about Splatoon, and I think that would have been great but apparently there’s no splitscreen multiplayer. Good suggestion though!

solivine,
@solivine@sopuli.xyz avatar

There’s a good Kirby game on the switch that has coop story mode.

ConstableJelly,

Hell yeah, that’s perfect! Kinda forgot that I did also have the original Gameboy, and Kirby’s Dreamland was almost certainly my favorite game on it.

eco_game,

I absolutely loved Splatoon 2, especially the DLC. It’s such a shame that you have to pay for online battles though.

ursakhiin,

I love Mario Maker, but I would suggest skipping 2 at this point. It’s been out so long that most of the hype has died on it and there is so much garbage content that somebody picking it up right now is likely to get frustrating for new players.

sleepybisexual, do gaming w Got a Switch today, need some recommendations.

Also, either homebrew your device or buy games second hand pls, Nintendo is pretty fucked up

Cwilliams,

Um, maybe don’t recomend homebrewing to a brand new Switcher? The process is very risky and it can brick if you do it wrong.

But I do agree with buying second hand games. Nintendo is pretty messed up

sleepybisexual,

Yea, tbh my switch is still stock, at least mine is likely a v1 so yayy when it goes eol

Second hand is more than good.

Or maybe a mig switch, idk if they work with stock tho

You should also check out dekudeals if you like to get digital games. It tells you what is on sale as well as being able to organise by ratings from metascore. Hope this helps

@Kerb@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

im also pretty new to fighting games.
but from what i heared, playing arcade mode is verry diffrent from playing against other players.

especially in older games hi level cpus tend to fight dirty,
using input reading and op boss characters.

input reading cpus basicly have inhuman reflexes,
and will counter big comittal attacks like jumpins or tatsu as long as they are free to move.

so throw out non-commital pokes, untill they do something you can counter.

if its the bosses you are struggeling against,
only perseverance will help. (unless you find a move the ai cant deal with)
they are designed to take your quarters.

sleepybisexual,

Yea, arcade mode is hard, fuck thawk and that one jump combo.

The arcade mode is sf4 3ds is a bitcj too. How tf do I beat m bison

sleepybisexual,

Also, is haduken and hkick non commit? Those are my main pokes

moody,

Crouching MK a is less committing poke. It’s faster and has more range, and has less recovery time. You can basically always chain it into a fireball, and if the kick hits, so does the fireball. If the kick is blocked, the fireball has to be blocked as well.

Use the fireballs alone at medium range. If they jump over, a quick dragon punch knocks them down. If they block, you get some chip damage in.

If you really want to get good, look up frame info for your character. It will let you know which attacks can be chained into each other, and which ones are easier or harder to punish.

sleepybisexual,

Yea, I need to get good at dragon punch, can’t do it consistently. Will use low mk

Huh, I was staring at outerwilds today thinking I should play again, but then immediately thought I’ll have to go here there here and realised it’s forever ruined for me.

So instead I’ve been playing stellaris.

chloyster,

The saddest moment of every outer wilds fan is the realization it cannot be played again :'(
