mohab, do gaming w Let's discuss: God of War

Combat peaked in GoW3 and it's definitely the best western action game, IMO. OG trilogy badly needs a remaster and PC port, which I read is in the works, so that's good.

I liked the freedom of expression GoW3 gave me. Like, you get one opening and you can fuck up the enemy in all sorts of ways in true action game spirit. Really good stuff and more western action games should've followed suit.

PentastarM, do gaming w Let's discuss: Grand Theft Auto

Having played Grand theft san Andreas, and Grand theft Auto V, the best part for me is driving around and exploring. I’ve tried doing the missions and such and I dunno, just not my thing.

So, a way I would enjoy the series more is like a free roam mode or something, maybe a crime spree mode too now that I’m thinking about it, where basically you could get away with whatever and not have your star level increase.

I guess just the regular game is a free roam mode, at least in GTA V. San Andreas locked parts of the map behind a “Hurricane preparation” excuse till you did more missions.

@luciole@beehaw.org avatar

Me and my son have a history with Pokemon. It’s a franchise close to our hearts, but we’re both disappointed with everything that happened on the switch. I’ll always remember taking him to the anime convention to battle with the local gym champions. Just watched the Z-A trailer and it’s depressing really. The last entries’ artistic direction is utterly lifeless and the gameplay feels stale, despite the revolving door of gimmicks from gen to gen. I’m still hoping, one day, we get a fucking good Pokemon game though.

comically_cluttered,

I mean, the Z-A previews definitely showed a similar art style, but the battling gameplay is completely new. Dodging out of rollout looks great.

If it’s in Lumiose, I really hope the “you’re not the one” hex maniac girl is back and they actually resolve that plot thread. I doubt it, but who knows.

Lol, I’m actually playing through Violet right now. I don’t even know why, since I finished Scarlet a few weeks ago and they’re basically the same. I think I just like Miraidon more than Koraidon.

But man, I started playing the series when it first came out. Red was my first, but I’ve had long periods (like almost a decade) in which I never even bothered with the series, then eventually came back to it and finished what I missed. It’s a series I just kind of bounce between.

Honestly, getting back into it after a long break last year with Shield surprised me. I get why some people don’t like it, but I really had fun with that game.

As for similar games, Cassette Beasts nearly ruined the entire series for me. Such a great game that did so much right and so very little (if anything) wrong (in my opinion, at least). Art, music, creature designs, battle system, and especially writing. All fantastic.

I’m eager to try out Beastieball when I get a chance as well. Looks fun.

Vodulas,

I played the Beastieball demo, and it is a ton of fun. The combat is tactical volleyball, and is pretty satisfying to play.

I bought the whole collection on GOG when it was something like 80% off in 2023 I think. Still haven’t started. I hope it’s as good as people say. I know many people start with 0 but I think I’ll start with Kiwami for the close-to-release-order experience. Will probably start it sometime this year.

CubitOom,

I did this. Still playing through them all by release date

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Did you start with Kiwami or with the OG non-remastered Yakuza 1? I’ve heard people suggesting both.

CubitOom,

I started with kiwami. There was a perceptible downgrade when I played the first non kiwami Yakuza 3 however

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Yeah that’s kinda unavoidable I think unless you play in true release order. I’ve heard people say the same warning as a reason not to start with 0.

st3ph3n, do gaming w Let's discuss: Like a Dragon / Yakuza

I have played all of the mainline games in the series in the last year, plus Ishin. It’s hard to pick a favorite, and the way they handled the transition to an RPG with the Ichiban games was very impressive. I think my favorite might actually be Ishin. I really enjoyed the feudal Japan setting, and it was a refreshing change from the usual Yakuza setting.

I will also add that the best thing I ever did to enhance my enjoyment of these games was to play them on easy. It allowed me to progress at my own pace and just enjoy the story and the side stuff without getting frustrated by massive boss difficulty spikes, although there were still a few boss fights that took a lot to beat even on easy difficulty.

grillme,

The retooling starting with Like a Dragon really is impressive. Crafting was in prior games but the job system gave it a purpose. The addition of a party added both banter and way more options for cutscenes. Lampshading the RPG elements fits so well with the overall series absurdity.

I accept the challenge. I’m taking you down.

Also, I call out @knokelmaat as promised, if you yet live for the game.

MudMan, do gaming w yeah, I game on APUs

We really don't talk enough about how the worst rated game of the Tomb Raider reboot from the B studio for the series ended up being the default benchmark for gaming for the better part of a decade.

Good for Eidos Monteal. Guardians of the Galaxy deserved better, too.

thief_of_names, do gaming w Let's discuss: UFO 50

Absolutely the game(s) of the year for me. Some games are surprisingly long with hours of gameplay, but most are short, and with the ability to jump in and out of games at will my ADHD brain is very happy. Some games I would never have bought on their own, and them being in this little bundle means it’s easy for me to give them a chance.

I really do recommend ufo 50 to anyone who likes retro games. It’s like having a nes emulator with all the games, but with the added benefit of modern game design and a minimum standard of goodness.

Also, playing the bundle at the same time as a friend is a nice experience! You start talking about what games you’ve tried and give each other hints and stuff.

Fav games: Porgy, Avianos, Rock On! Island, Pilot Quest (time in this game passes when you play other games btw!), Grimstone (get a bank account if you get stuck), Mini & Max

ByteOnBikes,

This is an experience I wish I can have. I feel like a middle schooler again as I play each game, wanting to go to my pals and go nonstop about what I found.

This is the only game that stood out to me in this sale, sounds like i should get it.

chloyster, do gaming w Let's discuss: UFO 50

My goty and one of my new all time favorites. It’s the best bundle since the orange box. Every game is unique and awesome and very well thought out. These are not mini games, they are well well thought out, clever, and fun games.

Not all are for me, but I’ve had fun stumbling around each game and figuring them out. Favorites include:

  • Mini and Max
  • Party house
  • Rail heist
  • Night manor
  • Overbold
  • Warp tank
  • Mortol
myfavouritename,

Mini and Max is so strangely awesome! It didn’t have to have nearly as much content as it does. It’s huge!

odium, do gaming w Let's discuss: Platformers

My favorite platformer is hollow Knight (if that counts), and Celeste is my second favorite. I like my platformers to be challenging.

DesolateMood, do gaming w Let's discuss: Uplifting Games

I’m gonna go with Forza (Assetto Corsa also works to a lesser extent). Sure the focus of the game is on racing, but it can be extremely relaxing to hop into any car you want from any era and just take a cruise and look at the scenery

HER0,

Sometimes I chill after work by driving around the Nurburgring in a touring car in Automobilista 2.

Alternately, for more driving games:

  1. Art of Rally has a free roam mode, which is pretty chill.
  2. I’ve been playing Sledders, a snowmobile game. It is super early in early access, but it can be fun to just roam around (and learn how to drive a snowmobile).
N00b22,

I like Forza, but have caution with the online players. Most of them love ramming people

DesolateMood,

I’m well aware. I enjoy the game all the same. Besides, I think people overstate how bad rammers are. Yeah it happens sometimes, but most people want the same thing you do: a clean race
