posts and discussions about it are against this sub's rules regarding real-world political discussions.

The game is a satire of real-world politics but discussion about it is forbidden?

NotSteve_,

I mean TBH I do get it. Not every community has to be consumed by American politics

NoForwadSlashS,

While I understand the stance for a communuty, honestly it's such a cowardly move. Im getting tired of games that make great political commentaries and/or cutting satire and then state "no political discussion".

I'll report to the nearest Democracy Officer for mentioning democracy, I guess...

4am,

They don’t want there to be a flame war between real actual humans who realize that it’s a parody of fascist imperial colonialism a la Starship Troopers, and brain broken groypers who idolized the sheer raw power of just taking everything as though you are entitled to whatever you can get your hands on.

Did this title get cut off?

PatheticGroundThing,

It’s just a journalist thing to replace an ‘and’ with a comma. The devs are dissatisfied with AI and pay.

Cevilia,

Weird, the ampersand is right there. But ok :)

It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes publishers to realize that AI can’t replace their workforce.

I’ll post my comment from another thread on the same subject: I have very little respect for Valens’ writing after seeing articles spreading lies and essentially striking out at a vtuber company for being rejected by them. Vice is crap, but Valens is no better.

Rose,

Not a great idea to call someone out for spreading lies but not support the claim with evidence. Also, what are your honest thoughts on Gamergate?

bread,
@bread@feddit.nl avatar

I’m not going to dispute point-for-point; I exclusively post from my phone and it would be too much work. An example would be taking a clip out of context, i.e. a vtuber talking about someone else’s talking points, and portraying it as though they are the vtuber’s opinions.

Gamergate? I don’t really care.

Rose,

You could still name names and link the article(s), then offer a verifiable summary as to why you believe the coverage is inaccurate. You’re not disputing that Kirsche is transphobic and that there is a genuine-looking clip of them being racist though, are you?

bread,
@bread@feddit.nl avatar

I’ll reply to the two last bits:

  1. Notice how it’s specifically about activists, not all trans people. As far as I’m aware she has not expressed hate for trans people.
  2. I think she was discussing Kier Starmer’s statement on the matter. There are two sides to “The Great Replacement Theory.” One is factual, and supported by people such as Starmer, and one is an antisemitic theory. She was talking about the former. That’s not racism.

Hmm, some of those titles are suspicious because yes perverted nerds do cause some of society’s problems as we learned from the whole incel movement, and there are studies showing some types of porn lowers empathy etc for others.

Hirom, (edited )

Yes, there are good reasons for moderating a platform that distribute games.

The deleted article’s author question some of the feminist group’s claim, and highlight some involved parties are motivated by faith. But don’t dispute the need for moderating Steam where necessary, for instance if there is CSAM.

I don’t see a good reason to censor those articles. They could be better, maybe better highlight the danger of some porn, and the need for moderating. But the articles are not that bad.

DoucheBagMcSwag,

It’s the fucking principle.

3rd party payment holders should not be the morale Police…what turns into morale reasons shifts to political very quickly

SweetCitrusBuzz,
@SweetCitrusBuzz@beehaw.org avatar

We agree, actually.

However, someone somewhere has to moderate the things on a platform and to be fair steam famously doesn’t often.

t3rmit3,

Yep, it goes well beyond the principle.

If this sticks, expect every conservative group in the US to start trying this. Pressure Visa/ MC/ PayPal not to accept charges from Planned Parenthood, or from LGBT-friendly businesses, or from book publishers they don’t like, etc. This is just censorship by other means.

Good on nu-Waypoint but I do want to make it clear:

This is not the Waypoint that made a name for social justice oriented reporting and leftist gaming content. They all got fired/driven out over the years. Austin Walker has nine million side hustles but is mostly over at Friends at the Table, Natalie Watson has a fucking BAFTA as part of Half Mermaid, and Rob/Chia/Patrick are now Remap. And the rest of the crew have also moved on.

This is the Waypoint that Vice created because they decided they wanted to have a gaming outlet again after firing old Waypoint. And mad props to Valens et al for standing up for THEIR writing but… big ol’ asterisk.

frezik, do games w Waypoint Writers Quit Over Removal Of Articles Related To New Steam Policy

Valens said on her stream that she was paid $30 an article; a contributor to the previous iteration of Waypoint, Nick Capozzoli, said rates used to be at least $300.

Holy shit.

I’ve dabbled a bit in writing tech articles. I was published in a print magazine >20 years ago, and I think I got around $300 for it. More recently, a few articles I did for a niche tech website went for $100 each.

$30/article? For a site that has Vice behind it? Yeah, pretty easy to walk away from that money.

FarceOfWill,

I had to do a double take at the idea waypoint exists after they fired the entire team (by accident) a few years ago

Lemme take a guess here: mgmt are going this start complaining that human written articles are dropping off in quality so they will need to focus more on AIGen content.

Vice really is garbage.

PatheticGroundThing, do gaming w 'Friendslop' Isn't Real, But People Love Posting About It Anyway | Aftermath

These games can be good, but I’ve always felt that selling a game primarily on being “fun with friends” is an extremely weak point. Everything is fun with friends. Watching grass grow is fun with friends.

scratchee,

Sure, that’s absolutely true, but the games that have done well recently have found ways to properly take advantage of an “easy” market. I suspect the lesson is just that this particular market is well suited to smaller and simpler games but with quick turnaround, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, if anything it means small games companies can shoot for big wins, which can only be a good thing.
