There will be ways to force your Windows 10 machine to pull down the continued updates meant for government and extended support contracts, just like there was for Windows 7.
Not a good or particularly safe way to keep your PC, and even the extended updates will stop eventually, but worth knowing in case anyone is afraid of making the full switch to Linux.
Um… they are, and have been for almost 20 years, since the Wii. Or the N64 depending on how you look at it.
What did you think Virtual Console was? How about the NES and SNES mini? What about the “Nintendo Game Pass” or whatever they’re calling it?
Animal Crossing’s original Japan release had NES games in it, and so did the GC rerelease/psuedosequel we got internationally too.
Even better: During the Wii era, the Wiis at the Nintendo Store in New York City ran official Nintendo made software to load games off a connected hard drive, so you could play multiple of their new releases without workers having to switch discs.
It has always been about attempts to prevent piracy and keep control over how people access their games for Nintendo, and they are roughly 10 years behind the curve on modern tech trends.
CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski has issued a strongly worded response to accusations that the studio “is in a lot of trouble right now” because of “diversity hires,” saying the people peddling such nonsense need to “stop looking for conspiracy theories.”...
Ugh, I hate that the actual ethical issues in games journalism got swallowed up by all the other hateful bullshit.
Like, sponsored articles weren’t being disclosed, and some games journalists were being fired for refusing to give favorable reviews to games that were advertising on their site. There were private mailing lists where behind the scenes coordination was happening to push kinder reviews of one member of the list’s friend’s indie game. White jounalists were claiming themselves as mouthpieces for minority gamers who never asked for someone else to speak for them.
Which gave cover for explicit mysogyny and hate… then further got twisted by far-right idealogues like Milo Yannopolous and Breitbart.
On a legal level, it is how GOG works. They still only sell licenses. You just have the loophole that their installers and the games installed by them will work regardless.
I’ve been playing a bunch of Rusted Moss lately. It’s a Twin Stick Shooter Metroidvania, which is appreciably different from the Hack and Slash type I normally play. Getting used to mouse-and-keyboarding a platform heavy game took a bit. And boy are there platforms....
There’s always the classics: Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a spritual sequel to Symphony, made by a good chunk of the people who made Symphony now that Konami has effectively stopped making games.
The Castlevania GBA and DS games are great as well.
I also really enjoyed Blaster Master Zero. It has a few distinct gameplay styles within the overarching metroidvania style overworld progression. Side scrolling platformer in a tank, on foot, and isometric on foot shooter.
I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played of Xeodrifter, but I didn’t get too far into it.
My guy, I have no clue where this intense level of salt is coming from and I highly suspect the only person who cares so much about whatever has you this upset is you.
If you intended this to be some sort of tongue in cheek humorous thing, it doesn’t come off like that at all. It comes off as someone fishing for sympathy while they refuse to be straight forward about what is bothering them.
No one is keeping score on your streak but you. Might be time to take a break. Looks like your last screenshot post was deleted or something anyway.
Additionally, if you care about the upvotes it’s generally a really bad idea to complain about them. Just invites drive by downvoting out of spite.
Lastly, for a better way to poke fun at prudes, maybe post completely safe for work screenshots from a game that is exceptionally not safe for work.
Welcome to the reality of indie game dev. Great ideas are comparatively easy, effectively dirt cheap. Like most things worth doing in life, the difficulty lies in actualizing those ideas and bringing them to reality.
The only real solution is experience. Beyond that: Learn to treat your “amazing game ideas” like cattle instead of pets. Prioritize rapid prototyping of your main gameplay loop/systems before you fall in love with the set dressing.
All of that said, by just finishing a project you are already further along than 90% of amatuer devs. The best takeaway from 4chan’s long running amatuer game dev threads: just like make game.
Creating something that exists beyond your imagination is always progress forward. Releasing a game, even one that doesn’t meet what you hoped, even one that’s objectively shit, is monumental progress.
Now toss it up on itch.io or whatever storefront and start on your next attempt.
What “recent events”? People being weidly offended by “woke-ot” and the unnoficial community mod who apologized for being shitty years ago, or is there something new I missed?
The linked Github doesn’t have any information on why it was forked. The readme hasn’t been updated at all to say anything about why this should be used over normal godot.

Today’s game is New Vegas, and it also marks the end of New Vegas for me. For the screenshot I originally considered doing my ending slideshow, but I thought that might 1) contain too many spoilers (though I doubt there’s many people that haven’t played it) and 2) make for too long of a post as I got almost all the slides....
My suggestion is that next time you play through to use the Viva New Vegas modpack, or the equivalent one for the Tale of Two Wastelands (puts Fallout 3 into New Vegas’s slightly updated engine).
Great “vanilla plus” experience. Just try to avoid getting into modding hell, spending more time tacking extra mods on top than playing.
At the end of every exchange, someone has to be left “holding the bag”. There’s no end state that doesn’t end up screwing over someone else so you can cash out.
Sigma Star Saga is an odd RPG game where the random encounters are short side scrolling shmup segments. I really enjoyed the amount of it that I played, but you can get screwed in some encounters as it gives you a random ship each time, and some are worse than others.
The game is Sea of Thieves. Me and a friend did a Skeleton Camp, and after getting the treasure from the room in the screenshot above (worth 20k), we were attacked by these guys who rammed us. They sank our ship before we could get back on, so i spawned the ship back in, raced to pick up my friend. Then i sailed past the...
Cheating in a multiplayer game is a shitty move, regardless of motivation.
They released safer seas (pvp-less servers) if you don’t want to be hassled.
If child voices bug you (squeakers), go to the options, mute voice chat from non-crewmates. Turn on auto captions for voice chat if you’re worried about missing something or them sneaking up on you because you can’t hear them.
Runescape is jacking up their subscription prices next month, going from like 12 bucks to 14 bucks a month. The increases range from 20% to 56% in price depending on currency. Players are PISSED about it especially since the company got bought out by some investment firm earlier this year, and they see it as a shameless cash...
The model hasn’t changed, but as development of new content has continued, 95% of new content is subscription only.
That said, I can’t speak for Runescape “proper” aka Runescape 3, the current “main” version. I’ve heard a lot of concerning things about all sorts of mobile game style predatory shit going on there.
I’ve only played Runescape 2, now called “Old School Runescape”, which is a fork of the game from (I think) 2006.
Essentially, right around that time they completely overhauled combat, stat progression, and a bunch of other stuff, and called it Runescape 3. A lot of people didn’t like the changes and started hosting custom servers from before the changes.
Eventually they made an official version, called it Old School Runescape, and have been developing it side by side with “normal” Runescape since.
Old School isn’t predatory in my opinion. Outside of occasional “leagues” on special servers with specific challenges applied, there’s no FOMO. The f2p game has plenty of content enjoyable on its own. The subscription just unlocks a mountain of more content, including alternative ways to level up through early game. Technically you can advance faster with a subscription, but that’s due to having more options to turn into an over optimized plan, not some shit exp multiplier or something.
My man, this isn’t shaming. It’s someone politely pointing out that the entire world isn’t your personal soap box.
Want to speak out about how shit Ubisoft is? Go make your own thread. I’m being serious, Lemmy is overdue for some name and shame of horrendous game companies, and it’d be good to have some sort of megathread documenting their bullshittery here on the fediverse.
This also doesn’t really offer a different perspective on whether the game is enjoyable or not. Your justified distaste for Ubisoft is an entirely different topic to the question asked.
Today’s game is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. today was exhausting and i really didn’t feel like continuing Jedi Fallen Order tonight (still loving the game though), so i decided to take it easy and play Ocarina Of Time. I have a lot of fond memories of this game ever since i played the 3DS remaster in middle school....
If you’re up for tinkering, there’s a decent bit of mods for ship of harkinian. You can replace models with the 3DS ones, or even with Twilight Princess ones. There’s also mods for higher resolution textures.
Lastly, check out all the settings. I forget what QoL are switched on by default, but there’s a good amount of QoL you can toggle, like putting boots on the d-pad for quick equipping and unequipping so the Water Temple doesn’t suck.
I was playing Sea of Thieves with some friends today. Game bugged out or something because they started rendering as skeletons instead of their avatars. So i guess i have my own literal skeleton crew now
Haven’t played in around a year and a half. Shame, it had been a weekly thing for our little 3 person crew. We had even started to be able to hold our own in PvP ship battles.
Like for many other people, Valve single player experiences were one of my favorite of all time growing up. I considered both Half-Life and Portal to be masterpieces. It’s true they’ve always been distracted with multiplayer games as well, things like Counter-Strike or Team Fortress and I did play them for sure, because I...
Stuff has been leaking about the next Half Life game since Episode 2 came out, and not much of it had anything to do with what we ended up getting with Alyx. Don’t get your hopes up newbie.
What? Search nointro on archive.org for collections of cartridge games. Search redump there for disc based.
Anything not on archive (usually newer releases, or disc based games from PS2 or later), try some of the resources from the wiki/megathread on db0.lemmy.com’s piracy community.
They only care as far as going after large targets running rom sites (archive is much more than that, so they skirt by) and emulation of modern consoles (they go after the devs). They will never go after an individual just direct downloading and emulating shit.
Don’t miss out on Mario Vs. Donkey Kong (GBA, with a recent Switch remake). It’s the psuedo-sequel. The sequels to it though are completely different gameplay styles, unfortunately.
Brother, have you heard of our lord and savior, emulation?
Outside of a few weird edge cases, everything up through N64 era is easily emulatable. PS2 is… okay for most popular games but still actively being worked on.
There’s even video shaders if you want to make it look like your old boxy TV. A lot of games from that era have graphics made with CRT screens in mind.
Hello, thanks for stopping by. I’m currently in the process of saving the Super Replays from the classic team for myself, kind of putting my money where my mouth is regarding a previous response I made about the shuttering of Game Informer....
yt-dlp is generally the best open source tool for downloading/backing up videos from the internet. Despite the name, it works with thousands of video streaming sites, not just youtube. Completely free. I would never pay for a video downloading software.
It is command line based though. I’m sure there are forks with a UI, but I’m not familiar with them. There is a fairly detailed wiki for it, and a discord support channel. The defaults are fine for youtube back ups.
I would reccomend uploading whatever you back up to the Internet Archive. Then you aren’t responsible for hosting, and it’s available to the public.
I’ve found personally that even with changing refresh rates, variable refresh rate screens eliminate screen tearing and I’m a lot less likely to notice it.
This specifically is an easter egg ending in Chrono Trigger, requiring you to have beaten the game once before to access it.
Chrono Trigger allows you to warp to the final boss and try to beat them before you would reach them through the plot, from very early on in the game. A lot of the special endings require you to do that and win at various points in the story, which isn’t possible for most of the game unless you carry over stuff with new game plus.
I believe this ending requires you to start new game plus and then take the warp to fight the final boss as soon as you possibly can.
Don’t quote me on that though, the game has something like 13 endings and I canct keep them all straight.
Zelda 64: Recompiled is a project that uses N64: Recompiled to statically recompile Majora’s Mask into a native port with many new features and enhancements.
The Ship of Harkinian OoT decomp team have moved on to 2 Ship 2 Harkinian for MM, which is rapidly catching up to this separate static decomp project. I’d imagine that once it is done the individual randomizer comes next, then combined.
If you don’t care about it running as a PC port, there already is a combined rando that results in an n64 rom.
Friendly reminder that the original “loremaster” of Elder Scrolls left Bethesda before they released Elder Scrolls Online, and they replaced him with someone who has apparently been making pretty questionable decisions with ESO lore.
I mean, they always have the out of dragon breaks rewriting reality/making multiple conflicting timelines simultaneously canon (see the events of daggerfall as referenced in later games) to handwave away retcons, but overusing that just means that no lore actually matters.
are they supposed to just have a billion guns in every shot or something?
Fucking. Yes.
I mean, not every shot, but the variety of firearms should absolutely be a big part of every action scene at least. It’s Borderlands, and that was it’s original claim to fame: countless combinations of procedurally generated guns.
Have your prop department whip them up as different parts that they can stick together, like how the games do it. Firing effects can be added in post.
While I’m not particularly against what you’re saying, I think you overlook other issues with the older internet’s culture of not wanting/taking credit.
One only has to look at things like the “cheezeburger” corporation that made millions off of marketing lolcat memes that they had no hand in creating or even much hand in proliferating to see that people not taking credit isn’t a golden solution to prevent misuse and abuse by companies out to make a quick buck.
He’s Gabe Newell, the founder (and I think still CEO) of Valve Software.
Former Microsoft employee that started up a small game studio in the 90s. They took the Quake engine, modified the balls off of it, and used it to make Half Life, an FPS game that revolutionized the landscape forever with things like real time in-engine cutscenes that wove the story in through the gameplay, and through how advanced the enemy AI seemed. It also featured a ton of miniscule details requiring some clever coding to pull off, which really added to the atmosphere.
They also made the Steam gaming client, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, Counter Strike, Dota 2.
He’s not involved with the day to day much anymore. Pretty much retired in (I think) New Zealand now.
Very nice guy by most accounts. Was still responding to fan emails semi-regularly around 2010, and was one of the main voices in the dev commentary features in their games up through the Orange Box (Half Life 2 Ep 2, L4D, Portal, TF2).
He founded Valve primarily with his own money and has ran it for most of it’s existence, allowing them to release games that were regularly groundbreaking.
Half Life brought us advances in AI, in simulating complex details like animal food chains, in making story part of the gameplay through seamless in engine cutscenes, in “seamless” level transistions. It nearly single handedly killed tje genre of arcadey “doom/quake likes” for literal decades.
Half Life 2 further heightened the bar of story in games, graphical effects, reconstruction of real faces in games, facial animations, mocap for games, and was one of the first well done use of a “modern” physics engine in games. There were news articles about the great leap forward it represented in tackling the “uncanny valley”.
Portal’s, well… Portals were groundbreaking. Left 4 Dead created the co-op horde shooter genre, further advanced AI with the “horde director” concept of an AI orchestrating the placement/amount of enemies, and was one of the first large scale examples of well done contextual dialog. Team Fortress 2 revolutionized the class based team shooter genre, and unfortunately popularized microtransactions for skins/unlocks forever. Half Life Alyx is the first “VR first/only” full length triple-A game.
There’s the Valve Index, pushing forward VR tech. The Steam Deck, pushing forward handheld computing (at least in terms of build quality/price/ease of use).
They bought the rights to Dota, the original Warcraft 3 mod that was the very first Moba game, and made a sequel to it. CounterStrike was one of the vanguards of the original rise of eSports and it’s latest sequel is still a major player in that scene.
Without all of their Source Engine games we wouldn’t have Garrys Mod and the huge cultural impact that it’s still having on the internet. Source Filmmaker brought 3D animation with effectively anything you could import into Garrys Mod into the hands of the masses, which has also had a massive impact on internet culture.
There’s a hell of a lot of reasons to love/respect Valve, and by extension it’s founder, besides just Steam.
Yep, take some ideas from single player colony management games.
It’s astounding how much you can “automate” when fully using the filters and rules options in vanilla Rimworld. Mods increase that exponentially. Granted, different genre, singleplayer, and pausable while you configure things.
I think the challenge is balancing that with the real time events you have to react to, so it doesn’t further compress the meta to an even smaller set of “optimal” options.
In what world is that a mobster deal? The game initially released saying that PSN accounts were required, this is in every store front description. The devs clarified that was not enforced due to technical issues at release time.
Sony funded the game in the first place too. They didn’t take advantage of a moment of weakness. This is all contract stuff agreed upon long before release.
It absolutely sucks ass, but this is an incredibly basic business deal. Sony stepped in to provide server support because it’s Sony’s game, and Sony makes money off it. Now that the game is more stable, they likely went back to Arrowhead and said “Hey, it’s time you sorted out the contracted requirement for PSN accounts. You agreed to this.” and here we are.
Maybe Sony told Arrowhead that PSN accounts could be made by everyone. Maybe Arrowhead thought they could push back on the requirement after the game came out without them required. We likely will never know what went on behind closed doors.
But this isn’t shady, just absolutely monumentally fucking shitty.
Unfortunately, as long as refunds are handled reasonably well like they were with Cyberpunk 2077’s PS4 release, gamers won’t really have a leg to stand on. It’ll just be complaining that they can’t play something they wanted to play, after getting a number of hours in it for effectively free.
If you don’t want the raw experience, the Viva New Vegas modlist does an amazing job of “vanilla plus”. Haven’t finished my latest playthrough, but nothing felt out of place, and it was less buggy than vanilla.
