do you actually think just adding lanes will infinitely increase the capacity of roads?

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

yeah uh, i think you’ll find that you need junctions, which create chokepoints?

even with highways you get chokepoints at the ramps, and they are extremely absurdly costly.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

yeah see what’s happening here is that you’re completely ignoring junctions: even in the ideal case of a completely straight road you still need junctions to get on and off the road, which will put a hard limit on throughput.

This is why traffic in america is miserable, the traffic engineers fail to recognize that you can’t just put businesses right next to roads as that will cause stupendous amounts of choking every time someone wants to pop in for some mcdonalds.

3 lanes in each direction is about the most you’ll ever need, which is what you’ll tend to see on big highways in europe. And really most of the time you’ll do just fine with 2 lanes.

this is why i love witcher 3, it actually has a reasonably large and detailed city! like it’s still pretty unmatched as far as i’m aware.

I don’t remember who said it, but in some youtube video they said something along the lines that fallout 76 could have been the ultimate bethesda game if it was actually finished on release and didn’t have that stupid “no human NPCs” gimmick, as it REALLY embraced that environmental design that they’re actually good at.

They can clearly make fun games, look at skyrim and fallout 4 which tons of people love to just run around doing quests and fighting stuff in, but then they always bollocks it up by forcing in a story that barely makes sense upon closer scrutiny and they never capitalize of the potential of really truly interacting with the world.

I think bethesda could actually make the best VR game so far, the format plays perfectly into what they’re good at since as valve realized people just want to rummage around drawers for hours on end and explore the environments.
Hell even as is skyrim VR seems pretty sweet, imagine if they actually designed the game for VR from scratch!

I mean ESO isn’t a bethesda game, it’s made by zenimax.

And from what i remember it’s actually pretty decent for what it is, it definitely looks nice and iirc while it has microtransactions to catch the whales, it isn’t an absolute twat about it and there at least was a membership system that was/is quite reasonable.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i don’t understand how they could ship the game with more than 1 featureless gray rock planet, the interesting environments is the bread and butter of bethesda games and the one thing you’ve been able to rely on enjoying even if you find everything else to be garbage!

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Well a lot of people had very fun with fallout 4, which is my definition of a good game.

It’s not a great game, nor a competent one aside from the environments and functional gunplay, and it’s a fucking terrible fallout game, but it is pretty fun if you just run around shooting things and looking at the environments and laughing at the environmental storytelling.

it took me several hours to realize there was even a text chat, in basically any other game the first thing i would have seen upon loading into a mission would have been a slur.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

it doesn’t require friends, it makes everyone your friend.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I mean adding content without charging for it is precisely what made it a no-brainer for me to buy the game on sale, it’s amazing PR for them.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Or if you just actually take the time to have your programmers optimize the game, knowing the hardware is nice but sooooo much of modern games are just generally unoptimized.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

valve might be the closest thing i have ever seen to an actual benevolent dictator, even if said dictator is very lazy and only deigns to do anything significant once in a while.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i said valve rather than gabe for a reason, gabe mostly leaves the company to its own devices at this point while he focuses on realizing holodeck technology or whatever the hell he’s doing now.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

the steam deck is also just a regular ol’ PC so you can use it for non-gaming stuff like making a lil’ drawing on the go, or plug in some peripherals and just… use it like an honestly pretty okay performance desktop.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Looking at the retro computer scene should make anyone a diehard open source fanatic, it’s god awful how much retro stuff relies on a single guy happening to find an old disc in their basement and upload it to the internet, and a lot of the time that never happened and so the software is just lost forever and the only way hardware can be used is by people writing their own software completely from scratch and sharing it with others.

And of course if they then don’t make it open source that’s extra fun.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

MAC addresses are absolutely trivial to spoof, to the point that it’s just a drop-down option on linux lmao, so yeah good luck with that one

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I wonder if game designers realize that this actually fucks people like me up, if i get an item that is said to have sentimental value i’m going to put that in a chest and ignore it because i don’t have the heart to sell it and have it just get atomized when the vendor’s inventory refreshes.

I love Enderal for actually letting you hand over some items you get early on, you can totally just ignore them or sell them but if you’re like me and have the instinct to keep sentimental items then you get to be absolutely flabberghasted when you realize the game accounts for this.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

my only problem with them is that they can tend to be a bunch of extra data to download, rather that including it in the first download

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

saves are also important for archiving and sharing game states, maybe i want to preserve this specific game state so i can relive it for the rest of my life? or i want to download a save from someone else to experience something specific they found or made

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

since developers have stopped making demos i simply take matters into my own hands to try games before paying for them…

new tesla model least likely to spontaneously catch fire and explode to date, say sources

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i genuinely cannot imagine that it’ll be anything other than a continuation of the bethesda model: simplify and just add more environments to keep the players inside the basic gameplay loop of “go here, do thing, return, reward, go here, do thing”

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

shame most people who implement it don’t agree

I’m hoping for a middle-age mario to show up, voiced by vinny vinesauce.

“eeeuuuhhh wahoo ey? Hope the princess made lotsa gabbagool because ah’m pooped!”

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

In fact i’d say this is a significant emergent feature that has been overlooked, you can set up a windows box in a dark corner of your house and stream games to your deck/laptop/phone/fridge without worrying about noise or compatibility.

I feel like valve needs to hire a guy to just sit around the office and occasionally go “hey uh, sounds like we could just polish up this edge case and market it as a rather mind-blowing feature?”

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

And many people feel the precise opposite, the whole point of the game is to micromanage

To me this new game makes the first one feel like a prototype, i’m so much more interested now that there’s actual sensible simulation of things and people don’t pull a car out of their ass or merrily walk 30km to work

All match-based games should have competitive, casual, and anarchy modes.
