Ernest needs to quickly delegate or this instance will quickly die (kbin.social) angielski

I appreciate that earnest made a post yesterday, or maybe it was the day before, saying that he is not dead and hasn't given up on kbin. It's not on this magazine, so I'm not sure where it was since this seems to be the most appropriate one, but in any case....

If Ernest is listening, I'd love to volunteer to help be a sysadmin/coordinate sysadmin schedules. I've got like 20 years of tech experience, with a lot of it being handling support teams and administering Linux systems. I know I said I couldn't because of money, I realized that social currency is worth even more and I like you folks and want this place to succeed.

So if anybody can get in touch with him, have Ernest email 246FHD@protonmail.com

I've got 1500 hours on unmodified Factorio. If I installed mods I probably would waste away in front of my screen.

Which would be bad because then the factory would stop growing.

I think the difference is that in sci fi stories they always have a scientific explanation for things. Star Trek is a good example of this. Tricorders, shields, phasers, warp drive, impulse drive, and replicators all have in-universe scientific explanations. They might be made up, but there is no element of magic in any of it.

Star Wars, on the other hand, doesn't really get into those things. Yes, there are technical manuals, but we don't see engineers on the Death Star reversing polarity. And nobody liked it when they tried to have midichlorians be a scientific explanation for The Force.

So I would agree with Mr. Hodgman that Star Wars is, in fact, a fantasy. It's a space fantasy, but it definitely lacks the "science" part of "science fiction."

You're absolutely right about that. The tricorder is hugely important to Trek, and I think there's another reason that makes it the most "sciencey" of sci fi: When someone on Trek sees a weird thing, what's the first thing they do? Scan it with their tricorder. Why? Because they're scientists first, and scientists know not to trust human senses.

I would say, rather, that the implicit set of laws governing a sci-fi world are a superset of those currently understood to govern ours, while in a fantasy world the governing laws contradict those governing ours.

I like this a lot. It covers really old sci fi like Mary Shelley or Jules Verne, and reinforces the idea that fantasy stories (good ones, anyway) need to also have laws.

This is going to be the pattern at all these places doing RTO: The ones who are capable of getting WFH jobs will get them, and they'll be left with their least capable folks.

Got back into Civ VI after a while and I'm continuing my playthrough of every Civ. Currently playing as Qin Shi Huang (Unifier) and crushed Georgia because they declared a surprise war on me.

Also, I made this turkey in KSP for Thanksgiving

I'm in the middle of a Subnautica replay and it's very much "fuck man where is the thing" combined with "I swear that thing was right here last time I played."

I was too sick to do rocket science for the past week so my Joolian mission has been on hold. Though I did decide I'm going to name all the ships after Bubble's kitties.

I've been doing a second play-through of Subnautica while I recover.

I've worked in software support for a decade and saying "We can't support you because you modified this" is pretty standard. And with automated replies they don't take too much support time.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

If you want to get really snarky, figure out who wrote the mods and cc them on the reply saying "For your convenience we have included the authors of the installed mods on this email so you can work with them to resolve your issue."

Reminds me of Larry Ellison:

Do not fall into the trap of anthropomorphizing Larry Ellison. You need to think of Larry Ellison the way you think of a lawnmower. You don't anthropomorphize your lawnmower, the lawnmower just mows the lawn. You stick your hand in there it'll chop it off, the end. You don't think "Oh, the lawnmower hates me!" The lawnmower doesn't give a shit about you. The lawnmower can't hate you.

Legend has spent years making Portal for the N64 and by Gaben he's done it (www.pcgamer.com) angielski

Several years ago PCG reported on the early stages of a project by programmer James Lambert, who really loves the N64 and decided for the hell of it to make a version of Portal that runs on hardware first released in 1996....

For a single game it's Factorio. Steam has me at around 1600 hours.

For a series it's gotta be Civilization. I've been playing since I was in fifth grade. I'd go over to my friend's house when he wasn't home to play Civ I. I'd spend entire weekends in college playing Civ II and III. I had to have my GF hide my Civ V disk so I wouldn't miss deadlines. And now I'm on a full playthrough of all the new civs in the latest DLC.
