Like… I don’t disagree with the sentiment here when it comes to most things that have to do with copyright and modifications; but if you’re using the modifications to get an unfair advantage in a multiplayer game, you’re a piece of shit and deserve punishment.

Being middling is worse than being bad. At least bad things get remembered for their badness. Nothing mediocre gets remembered.

Kolanaki,

I got Outer Worlds because of all the talk about it having more choice than Fallout 4 and didn’t find that to be true at all. It was largely the same with nothing but Yes, No, and Not Now options.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I disagree, every potential option for betrayal or aligning with one cause versus another in any given scenario was just as good as any other Bethesda game.

That’s what I was saying tho. It was only just as good as any other Bethesda game; but it was being praised for being so much better than that.

Not to mention you have twice as much work to unlock upgrades. You not only need the skill point, you need to research it. Then, and only then, can you actually build it. I don’t know why they needed to lock them behind both the skill and wasting the same resources used to build a thing so you can basically open a second lock on it. It would have been fine with one option or the other; it’s kinda stupid to have both.

Kolanaki,

I keep forgetting I have X4. Loved X3. Hated Rebirth. Got X4 after joining a thread about it and thinking they were talking about Rebirth, and then proceeded to never actually play it lol

At least the stories were pretty good for the most part. Starfield’s story and lore are just so generic and boring, and the dialogue ranges from corny to just flatout awful. Even compared to previous Bethesda games, the story elements in Starfield are a yawn fest that feel like they were written by history majors and not people who love science fiction.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Bethesda’s RPGs have always been shallow in the choice you have with dialogue and altering the story, but deep with the detail, world-building, and mechanics of gameplay. Arena is almost no different in the gameplay loop as Starfield. They went through various phases of how to use rules and complexity of certain systems, but have since settled in a formula established first by Morrowind and refined with Oblivion and further with Skyrim.

They are not about the story. The story is just kinda there to drive some motivation and give context to your own thing. They excel at immersing you in the world and allowing you to just play however you want without restrictions (such as being a god in everything without having to start over and build specific characters to do specific things). They have a pretty good track record of doing good environmental story telling and adding in all those little stories in notes and terminals that aren’t even tied to quests.

But when it comes to stories and dialogue? They had ONE game that was a masterpiece, Morrowind, and the rest have ranged from absolute shit to pretty good. And not one of them, not even Morrowind, actually have the same kind of choice and sweeping changes affected through dialogue get in a story-focused RPG like Baldur’s Gate. Bethesda will likely never have a game as well written as Morrowind again, because that isn’t what they are about.

They are very much about the action over the words. Despite the jank as fuck AI, the combat is still fun somehow (and imagine how much more fun it could be if the AI didn’t suck!), it’s incredibly easy to lose yourself in the world because of how detailed it is, and there are plenty of shenanigans to pull once you begin to dive in and see how everything works. Like, I can’t wait to completely fill one of the huge craters near my base with watermelons and then dive in.

They may not explode like in Fallout, but there is a new fun spectacle in town: Shooting out backpacks on low gravity environments and launching your enemies off world.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

With my experiences playing the game with an unsupported GPU and getting a solid 60 fps still as long as no NPCs are in the vicinity, I don’t think it’s the GPU side of things that needs optimization. It’s whatever uses the CPU.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

They could do everything they usually do but better if they used Unreal. They don’t need a custom engine. They just need an engine that isn’t over 2 decades old with a bunch of shit taped to it to make it look modern. Not to mention, ID already did make a custom built engine that handles much of what Bethesda RPGs do when they made RAGE. They could have used that, with the only issue being learning it. Not sure what their turnover rate is like… maybe they’re just too used to GameBryo/Creation to be able to switch now. It might take too long to learn anything new. Plus it would have to be able to have a toolset. If they didn’t release those easy to use modding tools, there could be rioting in the streets.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

It could be optimized better for intel. They have had that issue in the past.

Though… I limit my voltage to keep it from shooting up to 95c from their latest firmware updates (AMD cpus push themselves to the thermal limit intentionally), I kinda wonder if that is having an effect. It’s never been a problem before, however.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Even then you might not see them. I’ve noticed recently that a ton of songs that used to have the lyrics attached no longer show the lyrics or have the button to show them. And I do have premium.

Judging from this article, it’s already obsolete.

I think the mod is simply a better implementation of DLSS and one that possibly even works on non-nvidia or non-dlss supported GPUs. IDK, I saw it the other day on Nexus but didn’t get it because FSR works just fine 🤷🏻‍♂️

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

My GPU is Nvidia (1660 Super), but doesn’t support DLSS or doesn’t support the latest iteration of it, I am not entirely sure. I, personally, try to avoid using upscalers and just want the native resolution. This is the only game I have taken advantage of the upscaling for more than just comparison, because it’s almost unplayable without it since the GPU I have is technically below the minimum requirement. My sister has a newer RTX card so I can compare DLSS between FSR, and I can’t even really tell much difference. They’re both blurrier than native, but it’s more noticable on a monitor than a TV.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I’m wondering if this would help get a solid 60 outside of interiors/around loads of NPCs. Only my GPU doesn’t meet requirements, and it’s still playable. But is mostly 30-40’s unless I’m in a small interior or an interior with not many NPCs. The NPCs are more bound to CPU so I’m not sure if having lower res/filesize textures would help. I don’t think the VRAM is the problem.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s a little better. I’m pretty sure it’s gotta be the NPCs now. Video card is handling it all quite nicely, despite not having RTX or even DLSS support, but everywhere there are crowds it slows down by 20 fps. Currently just standing in the main road of Neon and it’s around 40-45, dropoing to 35 when I run, but get a solid 60 when no NPCs are visible by looking up at an animated billboard or something.

Legendary PC developer says Denuvo is “a punishment to the consumer” (www.pcgamesn.com) angielski

Disco Elysium is the most recent game that was just chock full of humor, though maybe not focused on it specifically… beyond that the only games I can even really think of that had a focus on comedy were the old LucasArts classics. Sam & Max, Full Throttle, Monkey Island… And Borderlands.

I was just thinking about how this doesn’t seem to be a thing anymore. Where are the comedic oriented games? Why is everything so damn dark, and serious and brooding nowadays?

But I haven’t played that Not-Really-Rick-and-Morty-shooter. I heard that was funny.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

To be fair, even with the bonuses, and karmic dice enabled, you can still end up rolling a 1 multiple times in a row.

That’s why I save on the roll screen before I toss the die. Go through inspiration/tools first. Then reload if I get fucked over. Because it just sucks failing a DC10 when you can only fail on a 1, since the game does not let you just take a 10.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

No… I am just more likely to buy a game I pirated if I actually like it enough to keep playing more than a few minutes.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The shooter? I know of it, I’ve seen Civvie11’s videos on it; haven’t tried it myself yet. In the same vein, I have played Cultic, which is very similar and also a pretty good game (underselling it).

Japanese PC gaming saw another year of explosive growth (www.pcgamer.com)

Japanese gamers have continued to embrace the PC as a platform at staggering rates, jumping up 43% from 131.3 billion yen to 189.2 billion yen in 2022. That's a total size of about $1.3 billion US. The data comes from the latest report by Kadokawa ASCII Research Laboratories, an industry think tank which compiles yearly material...

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Computer games were popular, but from what I remember about Japan and PC gaming in the 90’s was that they didn’t usually have IBM compatible machines and used their own funky shit, which had their own funky games.

Also, having the spell system repurposed was classic BGS.

Whoa what? Is there space magic?

Kolanaki,

You joke, but I think a collaborative game project like that would be interesting. Maybe not good, but I’d love to see what would happen with such a thing.

Ooooh… What if the SCP community collectively build the best damn SCP game possible? 🤤

Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun? (kbin.cafe) angielski

Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The protagonist V was without any compassion, just a loud asshole.

Would this not be mostly up to the player, since you control what V says when you pick dialogue options like any other RPG? If you play him without any compassion, of course he will sound that way.

Kolanaki,

Progress Quest.

It’s certainly funny but it is not a fun game. It plays itself. Literally. That’s the point. It was something you ran along side with your mIRC client to show your uptime in a fun way.

I don’t find any of those kinds of games fun. From Cookie Clicker to most mobile games, “idle games” are just the most unfun, un-game-like games ever made.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I would say it was the grandaddy of idle games. It was made as a joke, but actual games have followed its model seriously. And it sucks. It parodies JRPGs, many of which had an auto-battle option. But that was still just an option, and they typically had stories and other fun things about them.

There are tools that you can use to grab mp3’s by feeding it a Spotify playlist though.

The one place I need a map is the confusing ass labyrinths that are the dungeons. My only complaint about the gameplay so far is the dungeon layouts are nonsensical and confusing. I actually have to use the scanner to find a way through everything.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

By what metrics do they use to even tell a player is a smurf to be able to take action against them?

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I haven’t followed professional outlets for a long time. It’s pretty obvious most of them do not have enough time to give a proper review to these massive, 120+ hour long games. I used to read Computer Gaming World. Their reviewers would often mention that their rules required them to complete the game. Most of the reviews I see today, they don’t even necessarily get the whole fuckin’ game in their review copy. Just look at BG3.

Phenomenal game, with a solid story, incredible characters, fun game play, and just… Bugs. Lotta bugs. Especially after the first act. You might not even realize you are getting them because so many are that things that should happen, don’t. The reviews for it clearly only covered the first, most polished act. And even then, they didn’t actually mention bugs there and while it’s the most polished, it is still far from perfect. As time goes on and more people push further into the game, now those same review outlets put out editorials reporting on players bitching about the bugs on social media. Things that should have been covered in their own official reviews in the first damn place.

If all they’re going to do is write a bunch of bullshit they were likely paid to say, and then rely on users to generate more “news” content for them, I’m just going to stick with going straight to other players. There are still plenty that think for themselves and give honest, detailed descriptions of the game while trying to limit their personal opinions and bias. I want to be told how the thing actually is and make my own mind up based on my opinions; reviews can be objective.

!deleted6508 avatar

Only multiplayer games, since a single player game is usually available forever someway or another. Multiplayer games live and die based on popularity. No players = no game. And the longer the game is around, the fewer players it generally has so I like to get in right when they come out if I’m interested at all.

What friends?

Seriously: I’ve had friends talk me into getting stuff; but not from a fear of missing out. My friends were never really gamers. Half the shit they recommended to me I was already into or didn’t give a single fuck about lol

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s just that people who paid less need to wait.

I paid $0 and I’m playing it too 😉

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Well… Confirmed what I had feared. They heavily rely on dynamic resolution and DLSS/FSR instead of real optimization. Meet most of the recommended specs, except the GPU. I’ve got a 1660 Super and even on low settings @1080p, the game runs anywhere between 25 and 60 fps. And it’s like… Backwards from what I would expect. Indoor areas are the slower areas, while outdoors is nice and snappy. But it looks blurry as fuck with the resolution scale at anything other than 100%, and even ultra settings do not put it that high.

That said, it is still playable without having to mod in lower textures and reducing clutter. Which is more than I can say about Fallout 4 at release, and I had the exact recommended specs for that one back then.

First game since I built this machine to run this poorly with settings this low. Even Baldur’s Gate 3, which looks way better, runs so much better at Ultra settings than Starfield does at the minimum.

Other than that, the setting feels pretty bland, which is not what I expected considering the passionate way they talked at lengths about it. It’s all very generic and very obviously just trying to make every fun sci-fi trope they like stick. I am not playing for the story or the writing, but the world building is usually one of their best features… This one is pretty lackluster with the world building, and so far has not really drawn me in.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

I mean… Yes, but I would have expected it to not run at all. It runs playable. Which is crazy for it not only being an unsupported GPU, but also a BGS game. It wasn’t meant as a bash, other than it probably could have been supported if they didn’t use DLSS/FSR as a crutch. It was praise for the stability actually being fucking solid for once.

Complaints about the looks still stand (don’t need to have high fps to see the world looking nice in a still frame lol). At its best, it looks 5 years old. I’ve seen better recently, so it’s kind of disappointing.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

They would be identical, assuming they are both actually modified to allow for the proper airspeed, since they are still both in the Source engine. You couldn’t surf in either with the default movement settings.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Does this mean I can pirate it early? 😮

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

I got nothing to care about. I can nuke my drives at any time and not feel the loss. Plus Dauphong has never let me down.

Kolanaki, (edited )
!deleted6508 avatar

Nothing popped up when scanning it. Not even the crack being flagged as a crack.

Game runs like ass tho. Everything but my GPU meets recommended. I still have a 1660 Super. Get anywhere between 30 and 60 with low settings, depending on where I am and what’s going on. First game in a while to just cripple my shit. 😩

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It’s weird how being in a small room gets me about 32 fps, but then going outside into a forest I get 60. Usually it’s the other way around, with interiors being the faster zone. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve seen some others getting similar results on a 3080 with the same CPU (Rysen 5 3600X) I have though, so now I’m not even sure upgrading my hardware would make a difference and it’s probably just classic Bethesda optimizations.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently taking up all the storage space I would give to Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG.

Damn dude. You only have ~200GB of storage space? Upgrade your HDD/SSD, for real. I don’t even review games for a living and I have 2.5TB. I can definitely fit both games. And then some.

This artificial battle of the VASTLY DIFFERENT STYLE RPGs is fucking bizarre and just a made up issue to get clicks, I swear to Christ.

Kolanaki,
