reddthat, w Usenet Providers security
@reddthat@reddthat.com avatar

You are buying a legal service to access Usenet. What you do with that service is up to you.

Pick a provider that allows you to use crypto if you are worried about putting your identity to it: usenetnow.net/cryptoaccept/
They even allow monero!

Edit: I wish they had a referral plan, by now after recommending them so much I easily would have got a free month

matey,

I like that they have XMR and no middlemen. I use usenight, which does take crypto but has neither of those features - but costs $20/yr instead of $20/quarter.

thisusernameistaken,

Usenight is full speeds only at certain times of the day right? Plus the retention isnt as high so that is probably the price difference. Frugalusenet and Blocknews also take crypto the same way (same owners) and price is a bit more reasonable if you dont need the super high retention all the time but yes i agree about crypto. if you have to use a payment processor for it it sort of defeats the purpose.

usenight

:O This is too perfect for Australians! Pity its only 29xx days retention, but still pretty damn good.

If by “thief” you mean someone that copies information, then yes I am.

forgotmyaccthxbye, w Easy and safe linux piracy with jc141

jc141 member here.

Glad you like what we do. Some observations: there generally is no unpacking, we use an archiving system which enables users to play without populating their drives with the extracted files.

Also glad that you find them safe. We started including a scanning result from ClamAV (open source cross platfrom malware scanner) to each new torrent as well as instructions to scan it yourself. And a blake3 checksum for authenticity.

@iturnedintoanewt@lemm.ee avatar

Wouldn’t using an additional virtual layer for storage affect performance during load/save and normal asset streaming? I guess this might work for older games, but for newer games I don’t see how performance won’t be hit.

forgotmyaccthxbye,

99% of the games tested are perfectly playable. In cases where its not we can relax the compression settings. And we use zstd which is super fast. Try for yourself and see.

FOSSFloss,

I obviously can’t verify if you are a jc141 member but I’ll believe it, I think it’s sicc that you’re adding an antivirus scan to the gamefiles and that the games don’t require extraction.

uriel238, w Is it wrong to pirate movies I've purchased digitally and load onto my Plex server?
@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

One of the rights we are continually trying to claw back from the IP Maximalist lobby (and their minions in office) is the right to enjoy the media you own in a format available to you.

However, the studios and labels like taking another bite of the apple by releasing new versions, or versions in new formats, sometimes twice as they release better versions that correct for bad transfers (e.g. the lightsaber problem with the early blu-ray release.)

Hollywood has established though repeated bad-faith behavior, it’s not interested in getting your money legitimately or while retaining a positive customer experience, but extracting your money any way they can.

The DMCA forbids breaking DRM even for legal or non-copyright violating reasons (which is how we lost the right to repair or even jailbreak phones). And they could use this to prevent you from converting formats of your media to one you can actually use, but they’d have to make a stretchy case in court.

Sony also overcharges for scratched or failed media, so they’ve been caught treating their stuff as licenses or media when it legally suits them.

PS: Illegal ≠ Wrong. LGBT+ people are not grooming children, but religious ministries are.

adonkeystomple,

Yeah it’s crazy how much the world has changed even in my short lifetime, especially with the mass adoption of digital media. It’s going to be so difficult for people to retain their rights to what they purchase.

to55, w Why almost every tracker have malware ads?

I don’t think regular companies want to advertise on piracy websites. And possibly the malware ads pay more.

wolfshadowheart, w Safe site to download older games?
@wolfshadowheart@kbin.social avatar

Depending on the age, myabandonware and a guy named Vimm who has a lair are solid places.

Just one DL at a time from the latter, but it's worth it. Also it's not that bad of a hassle, go from small to large games and it's over in no time.

DessertStorms,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

Unfortunately myabandonware just links back to steam and Vimm only has the PS version, but thanks!

maxprime, w Safe site to download older games?

You could always run it in a sandbox if you’re not sure.

Unpopular opinion: for executables, I purchase everything. It’s no longer worth it to me to risk a ransomeware attack. The game you’re looking for is $20 on steam which certainly isn’t free, but worth it imo.

DessertStorms,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I really have no interest in using steam.
There's a reason I asked in this specific community.

maxprime,

Fair enough! Not trying to guilt or pass judgement.

Have you used windows sandbox before? I’ve used it with success back when I used cracked executables.

Apollo2323,

Windows sandbox? What is that? Like a VM?

laylawashere44,

A VM that is cut off from the rest of the computer so that malware cannot pass to your computer.

maxprime,

Not exactly a VM but a desktop environment.

learn.microsoft.com/…/windows-sandbox-overview

DessertStorms, (edited )
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I appreciate it.
And no, I've not used the sandbox before, I generally just scan the file for viruses and hope for the best (terrible practice, I know, but I so rarely download anything), but I would be happy to try it out, problem is all the versions I've downloaded so far have been in Russian (even when selecting English), so even if I do test them in the sandbox, I still don't know what any of the UI is saying lol

seaturtle,

An admirable sentiment.

The fact that a game is Steam-only is good enough reason to pirate it.

ultratiem, w Why WARP is OK for torrenting
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

WARP is a great. The only issue when it comes to torrenting is you can’t drill open any ports. Makes seeding super hard near impossible.

Other than that, yeah it will protect all traffic and is insanely fast for a free service (I snapped 700Mbps and my line is 1Gbps).

Nioxic, (edited ) w What are the best alternatives to The Pirate Bay in 2023?

Qbittorrent:

In the menu theres a search engine you can activate

It requires python but it will more or less auto install it all for you.

Go to the new tab and in the bottom theres a link to a page where you can download plugins for the search function (or maybe you need to just search first? Its been a while… lol)

Download the ones you want. (I just downloaded them all), and throw them into a folder (its all .py files)

Tell the search plugin to install the plugins from that folder. It can inatall them all at once. Just press OK to the ones that might be outdated.

Search for something. Sort/filter as needed, and download.

You can basically download most torrents without opening a browser.

Alternatively the megathread is decent

ArcaneSlime,

To add to this:

Do this, but instead of “add the ones you want” just add Jackett, then go to their github (you can actually get there through the “add the ones you want” menu in qbit, click

search -> search plugins -> “You can get new search engine plugins here: [URL]” -> [In the sidebar of that page] click “How to configure Jackett plugin” -> click “Jackett” to get to their repo and “this address” to get the stuff to copy for your jackett.py file for qbit and stick it in the right folder, which will depend on your OS.

kingludd, w Is there a way to seed things I have downloaded but already deleted the torrent for?

Try this tool to match a torrent file to its data: github.com/JohnDoee/autotorrent

luthis,

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for

amio, (edited ) w Can Pirate's Bay be considered "safe" if it is used only for non-executable multimedia content?

There's no such thing as safe safe. While unlikely, even media/data files could contain exploits. They'd need to target specific issues in specific software, but that happens all the time.

WinRAR had a recent high publicity mistake earlier, where a "specially crafted" archive can make executables seem like other files so it's easy to accidentally run them. Big no.

I also recently saw an (old) exploit analysis: some Linux thing got wrecked specifically because of vulnerabilities in a media player/codec - in fact opening the folder was enough to trigger the exploit, which could give someone unrestricted access to your system. Very, very big no.

Back in the day, I think Windows Media Player had some idiotic license download thing that was also used as an attack vector.

Basically: executables are just a slam dunk malware delivery vector. Media files are safer in general but not safe.

nicocool84, w I am looking into setting up a home mediaserver. Any good guides?

I would suggest airvpn over mullvad as they allow port forwarding, which will make torrenting work better.

Kissaki, w Separate qBittorent admin container?

It offers a web UI. Enable it and forward the port. Done.

matey,

That’s all bundled in one. What I’m asking about is separating the UI from the client.
