nosurprises, w Youtube - like apps like piped.video, but as Android app?

app that registers as a YouTube endpoint,

I don’t know what you mean, but LibreTube is using the Piped API. Though from my experience, NewPipe is more reliable on mobile.

krimsonbun,

newpipe’s been crashing a lot on my phone, my sibling’s phone and my tv recently, libretube hasn’t

theoldman, w With PLEX blocking Hetzner Hosting, I'm thinking of Moving to Jellyfin, but I have some questions.

If you are concerned about privacy, don’t use Plex or any other software which use central servers to collect your data. They can literally see where you click on the screen, let alone what kind of hosting you use. Jellyfin on the other hand is open source and don’t phone home. Also if a software is free, it doesn’t mean it was easy to create it in the first place. So please consider donation or support the project.

Cranksta,

The other option is Emby. It’s based on the same code, and is just another division of the same project. You pay for it, but it gets tons of support and more features as a result. Both projects have pros and cons but I’m leaning further to Emby than Jellyfin myself.

pascal, w With PLEX blocking Hetzner Hosting, I'm thinking of Moving to Jellyfin, but I have some questions.

Why would Plex block a specific hosting provider!?

Schmeckinger,

Large amount of people selling access to pirated stuff on hetzner servers using plex.

pascal,

Well, fuck.

I guess “that’s why we can’t have nice things” apply here.

skullgiver,
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

Too many pirates concentrate on one single hosting provider.

Plex has to keep up pretenses that it doesn’t want their customers to exclusively be pirates. Only legal CD/DVD/BR rips allowed! If it doesn’t, it’ll get sued to hell and back, and the Plex owners may go to jail for selling piracy as a service.

lukas, w got the disk space and the bandwidth to spare so
@lukas@lemmy.haigner.me avatar

I hoped that memes stay out of here, but that ship sailed. Perhaps Lemmy will allow people to tag posts in the future, so people like me can exclude memes from community feeds.

YoMismo, w If all adblocks get deleted, would you still pirate?

Many of us was already a pirate before Mozilla, Google and adblocks were created.

phoenixz, w I am looking into setting up a home mediaserver. Any good guides?

Don’t use Plex they regularly screw over their users.

Go for open source, go for jellyfin, it’s awesome

kniescherz, w I am looking into setting up a home mediaserver. Any good guides?
kniescherz, w I am looking into setting up a home mediaserver. Any good guides?

I would look into the zima board or zima blade, cheap but should be powerful enough. Otherwise there are really great server builds possible with low powered mini PCs possible. See Wolfgangs channel on youtube for inspiration.

You could use a raspi but there are more powerful options for a similar price.

Melatonin, w netflixmirror.com safe to use?

Why aren’t you using popcorn time?

LetsTryNew,

This looks new and promising

appreciate the tip!

Cqrd,

Popcorn time isn’t new, be sure to use a vpn with it, it’s basically just directly downloading and playing torrents

ultratiem, w Why WARP is OK for torrenting
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

WARP is a great. The only issue when it comes to torrenting is you can’t drill open any ports. Makes seeding super hard near impossible.

Other than that, yeah it will protect all traffic and is insanely fast for a free service (I snapped 700Mbps and my line is 1Gbps).

PixeIOrange, w Can they even track pirated installs ?

All points made in that post are LMAO.

They estimate the installs. Or least thats what remains between they wont track installs and they have a proprietary data model to calculate them.

Enshittification takes its course.

QuarterlySushi,
@QuarterlySushi@kbin.social avatar

rofl seriously? Not only will they charge for the installs, but they won’t even use the actual number of installs - they’ll guess? This is the most hilariously stupid business model I’ve ever heard of

dingleberry,

All this makes a lot more sense with the lens of mobile gaming. Effort required is little, and margins are huge. If players don’t partake in microtransactions, you just bombard them with ads.

This is the future of Unity. They are counting on devs not even bothering with the whole monetization model and instead expect them to turn on IronSource ads.

elxeno, w Can they even track pirated installs ?

So those who aren’t victims of piracy will be “fairly hurt”?

Appoxo, (edited ) w What is your go to music grabbing solution?
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

If you just want to download music, nothing can beat Soulseek.

Appoxo, (edited ) w With PLEX blocking Hetzner Hosting, I'm thinking of Moving to Jellyfin, but I have some questions.
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

But recently PLEX says they will be blocking Hetzner hosting in the next few weeks. I’ve been considering moving to Jellyfin for a while, but I’m worried they will do the same thing in future.

Jellyfin: Completely autonomous of anything outside.
Plex: Authenticates with Plex servers so you need an external account

Jellyfin is a fully self-sufficient software not calling outside.

From the jellyfin core team (see point 2): www.reddit.com/r/…/jellyfin_and_privacy/?utm_sour…

From their website literally on the homepage:

Privacy Focused

Jellyfin has no tracking, phone-home, or central servers collecting your data. We believe in keeping our software open and transparent. We’re also not in the media business, so the only media you see is your own.

TheMadnessKing, w [Request] Remove ads from Duolingo?

Mobilism has Duolingo mods

can,

How’s that work? Can you use your main account?

TheMadnessKing,

I’m pretty sure it’s safe.
