You’re downloading old and/or unpopular stuff. For you to upload content someone has to be actively downloading that content (that’s how the bit torrent protocol works at the most basic level). If you choose some 5 year-old FL of a Game of Thrones pack with 7,000 seeders, that’s on you
The incentive structure just doesn’t seem designed well. It creates a zero sum game. When downloading you can either:
Not seed to 100%. This damages your ratio
Seed to exactly 100%. In terms of ratio maintenance across all seeders this option makes the most sense
Seed past 100%. You build up your own ratio but deny other downloaders from reaching 100% which hurts their ratio. They must spend longer seeding the torrent to reach 100%, which further decreases the likelihood of subsequent downloaders from reaching 100% when seeding
When you seed past 100%, you essentially have to rely on bad actors to create more upload work for good actors. If there are no bad actors then seeding past 100% is to the detriment of other good actors, who you want to protect because you also rely on them for system health. And private trackers aim to minimize the number of bad actors.
Some great private trakers implement a system where users are rewarded for the time they spend seeding rather than the amount of data seeded. This creates an incentive towards keeping torrents available to everyone for a long time, which makes the whole system healthier.
and some other trackers completely ignore all of that and make it extremely hard to gain ratio. if they all had a bonus points system that would be great though
Yeah, RED guarantees access, but it’s also possible to gain access without it; it just takes longer. Sites like TorrentLeech can serve as valid proof for certain sites during applications, for example. Additionally, AlphaRatio also has some recruitment.
I got around this by just downloading some big freeleech porn packs or a couple new release shows/movies. My highest ratio item is an anime episode I downloaded minutes after release
Use Sonarr or Radarr, it will download content for you as soon as it is available on the tracker. Since people are mostly looking for new stuff it works really well to boost your ratio. I have at least a ratio of 10 (first episode is closer to 20) for every Ahsoka and Futurama episodes. For Asteroid City I’m currently at 18.
Sonarr and Radarr actually take a bit after the initial upload to discover it, autobrr can grab quicker because it relies on the irc announce channel of the tracker.
Edit: to lemmy users, this link looks no different. To third party app users and Kbin users, etc, the previous links all cut out after the first underscore.
I mean sure, but that’s a bit more involved than just pasting a link with no code and having the renderer make a link, which lemmy is supposed to do. The app is failing to meet the lemmy spec, the developer should fix that.
So, it's actually more a Lemmy bug. Lemmy stores the comments just fine but the API displays it with markdown. The double underscore is screwing up other apps abilities to display it and there's really no way to avoid that. A third party app can't tell if it's supposed to be interpreted or not.
So on Lemmy, all the URLs look fine. On Kbin or any other apps, they'll all get cut off after the first underscore.
I’ve just checked on kbin and the link works just fine. Kbin doesn’t display the full link, but when you click it on the website it works.
Are you using an app to browse kbin? In that case it’s your app that’s not doing it correctly. Possibly kbin doesn’t give it the infomration, or maybe it just reads the text of the link and misuses that.
Either way, the problem is nothing to do with lemmy. However lemmy apps have their own little bugs to work out (eg instance agnostic links from v0.18) so we’re all in the same boat of fedeverse development.
The link works for me. I was helping other folks who may have an issue with bare links as pointed out by the other commenter.
Either way, Lemmy is the reason non-lemmy readers can't actually properly parse the information. The information is not what's stored in the database. Only Lemmy can display it properly since it wraps it up in a bunch of markup that is then provided to third parties. As a developer, I don't know what reasoning you still think you have to believe it's not Lemmy. Everything you've said so far does nothing to backup that point.
Edit: also, I'm done here. I'm not interested in convincing a non-developer their favorite platform isn't perfect.
Edit: to lemmy users, this link looks no different. To third party app users and Kbin users, etc, the previous links all cut out after the first underscore.
The link works for me.
So which is it? Did it work or not?
When I checked, it worked. Before the link was edited, when it was just a raw url with no markdown code. Lemmy dispayed the full link with the underscores. Kbin displayed a shortened version, but it linked to the same url.
You’re being incredibly pretentious with this “I’m a developer” nonsense. A developer of what? Be specific. Which app did you actually see the problem in?
Either way, you’ve been the one trying to push the blame on lemmy and users, right from the start. I’m not really sure what you’re playing at here, but it seems like you’ve realised your mistake and are now trying to save face.
The issue is with your app. Both lemmy and kbin desktop websites parsed the url correctly.
Edit: Works fine on lemmy and kbin websites, doesn’t work in Jerboa. So it’s yet another problem with Jerboa (or whichever app) text processing, nothing to do with lemmy and certainly not the user’s fault.
“I see a problem I can easily fix but obviously it’s someone else’s problem.”
Before the link was edited, when it was just a raw url with no markdown code.
It's always with markdown. Lemmy is the only web app that can access it without markdown. I explained it like four different ways now. If you don't understand it by now, you never will.
It worked for me and it's why I provided a full link. Since it was created on Kbin, it was escaped by Lemmy as well. So lemmy will display the app just like Kbin would. But anyone who creates a link on lemmy, it will always look wrong in every other web app or third party app. It's simply not possible for a third party app to display a link properly that was created by a lemmy user. Same goes for code boxes. They can only be displayed properly by Lemmy and no one else. It's not possible for third party apps to display them properly.
Lemmy is the only one that can display links and code boxes created by Lemmy users. Links and code boxes created by every other platform displays properly everywhere.
You're literally hand waving it away because it still works even though it's impossible to parse by any other app. Just because it is only aesthetic doesn't mean it's a bug. The bug affects jerboa more than Kbin. I still helped those users instead of your pretentious ass by saying "oh well, not my problem."
When there's a problem that only exists with lemmy, it's lemmy.
Do you need me to explain it yet another way? Do you need an ELI5?
You're the pretentious one speaking from some authority without having any clue what the fuck you're talking about.
I'm done. You're blocked so I won't be angered by any stupid replies from you.
Same goes for code boxes. They can only be displayed properly by Lemmy and no one else. It’s not possible for third party apps to display them properly.
Except Jerboa displays code tags just fine. There’s also the view source function.
There are ways to solve the problem, they just haven’t been implemented yet. That’s up to app developers.
I’m done. You’re blocked so I won’t be angered by any stupid replies from you.
Shock horror. Something tells me they don’t need me to get angered.
Edit: So, thinking on it some more for the benefit of anyone else, it would be perfectly possible to fix in Jerboa for lemmy. Jerboa just breaks out of the link but still shows the full url, only the rest of it is text and the bit in between two removed _ is italicised. Jerboa is failing to inhibit for the link and applying markdown to it.
Maybe on kbin apps it can’t work, because kbin shortens the link in text and doesn’t have a view source function. But kbin is not lemmy.
How? I read the comments and I can’t replicate the issue you are experiencing. The original link is causing the problem for me (but I can still access the page).
Could someone explain the benefits? I use public sites and download everything I’ve ever wanted and rarely have to wait more than a few minutes for them to finish. I’m no expert by any measure so I’m probably missing something.
It’s more of a broader benefit for everyone, but there are seems to usually be (a) rule(s) stating you have to seed a minimum amount of torrents to a specific ratio, which I don’t fully understand how that works past it helping torrents from completely dying.
Other than that, I don’t have a clue since I have never been apart of one.
There are three types of private trackers: general, specialty, and niche. A general tracker has most of the newest of everything - tv and movies and music and games, etc. A specialty tracker focuses on a specific media - movies or comics or audiobooks or TV, etc. And a niche tracker focuses on a specific interest - British television, or horror movies, or dnb music.
A general tracker has very similar content to public trackers, though they tend to be more secure. And like public trackers, while they'll have the latest items, and old popular items, they tend to have retention issues.
Since a specialty tracker has a narrower focus, it tends to have deeper archives for it's content. A movie tracker, for example, instead of having just the most recent movies and a back-catalog of older blockbusters, will have those plus a catalog of older, more obscure, less popular content, and it will often offer that content in multiple formats and sizes.
And a specialty tracker goes even deeper for those that have a particular passion for the subject that's covered.
Do you need a private tracker? IMO, most people don't. Most people are happy with what they have, or are happy with what they get from public trackers and other places. It's really only if you're finding yourself unhappy with public trackers - you're not comfortable with the lack of privacy, for example, or you're often looking content that you can't find - that I would suggest looking into private trackers.
I don't speak German and I don't watch anime, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. Your best bet would probably be German tracker; if it doesn't have the content, they can likely direct you to where it is.
The other option would be to join a tracker that specializes in movies, but they tend to be somewhat difficult to get into; I would be hopeful that German trackers are easier.
Makes a difference when you want to get something that’s a bit more older or more obscure, you’ll notice few to 0 seeds on these public torrents. If you find these titles on a private tracker, you will find it well seeded with high speed peers as most people use seedboxes for seeding the torrents.
First is speed. I’ve been able to get speeds of ~50MBps (not Mbits) on private trackers, granted this is dependent on Internet connection more than anything but I get 20-50% of that speed on public trackers.
Second is retention and breadth of selection. If you’re trying to download the latest Marvel movie then every tracker is gonna have that, but if you’re looking for an older movie then it’s much harder to find on a public tracker. And if you do find one, it’s likely to be seeded by 1 person and you can only squeeze 10KBps out of it.
Hard disagree. Plenty of private trackers have massive communities of request systems. You want some stupidly obscure movie and it has to be dubbed in Romanian? Private tracker.
Edit: My comment no longer makes sense after the edit :)!
I’m looking for a german dub of The Last Unicorn. The only torrent I found no longer has any seeders. What private tracker could have it and is it worth it to join a private tracker to just relive a childhood memory?
I literally just asked the same question to the friend who sent me this, it seemed familiar but I couldn’t place it. He said he thinks its Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, which definitely looks like it could be the one.
Oh yeah, that’s the one! It’s a very powerful scene. Crazy that it came out in 2011, a lot of it seemed so prescient. I watched it soon after the pandemic started, I think Netflix featured it around that time for obvious reasons.
i had a super stable provider for years that was shutdown by the fed and have been itching to find another US-based provider. hoping this new directory helps accomplish that!
But most of the providers have been operating on discord/telegram for a while and are unwilling to make the shift. They have their reasons too, I guess.
It means the publisher was too lazy/greedy to remove their ancient DRM themselves and just nabbed the work someone else did, slapped Steam Stub on top and sold it.
Better than their in-house attempts to remove anti-piracy measures. The Steam release of Manhunt has had all of its bullshit triggered for over ten years now. It’s literally impossible to play without community patches.
Edit: Lol, as it turns out, Silent’s discovery of this was triggered by the recent revelation of this about Manhunt!
Sad fact is, Rockstar doesn’t give a shit. They got busted using a cracked EXE in the Steam release, so they just tried to cover their asses by using an old EXE without SecuROM. I expect the same thing from this game before long.
Couple lucky things for the players, though. First off, the Razor 1911 crack is still in the files, they just renamed it to testapp. Second, old RS games have a dedicated community that give way more of a shit about them than Rockstar ever will. Silent and Fire Head have both released major patches for Manhunt that not only get it running right, but fix a bunch of other broken shit that Rockstar never cared enough to deal with.
