I stuck with Gamepass because I am a PC gamer. I toyed with PSN but the PS5 controller was not natively recognized by the client at the time I was testing it, which is dumb as fuck. Steam will pick up the controller and use their drivers for most games, but the PSN service just didn’t work with the PS5 controller natively.
Yeah I used to play on PC too but some of the AAA titles had terrible ports that required more performance in my opinion than needed and it was cheaper to switch to ps5 there is no perfect solution I guess lol but the ps5 can play those titles with damn good graphics and not drop many frames but on my PC framrate just sucked and I got sick of windows bull shit as well.
Unsurprising. They already split remake up to milk more money out of long time fans, and now they’re doubling down on the mobile market. I remember long wishing for a remake and now I want my wish back. DAMN YOU MONKEY’S PAW!!!
Hopefully development studios can hold strong and continue their boycott anyway. Backing down now basically means Unity got away with it, in a sense. Plus, companies are learning from each other’s shitty tactics lately ala Twitter, Reddit, and Recently Facebook coming out with payment schemes on things that used to be free.
So if Unity does this, other software companies will probably try some similar stuff.
While less competition is bad, I’m not sure there’s been a competition with Microsoft since like 2009. They have continuously proven that they will make the dumbest choices with stuff like always on online, can’t play used games, gimping games for the series x because the series s is basically just the Xbox one again, buying game developers and doing absolutely nothing with them, and releasing maybe two interesting exclusives in the span of 15 years. I was team green from the og launch until I got my PS4 but man I hope they just kick Xbox to the curb and just let PC kinda do its own thing. I have zero confidence in Xbox making any decision right in the gaming space.
It’s going to be more convenient and economical just streaming games and renting them forever and then upping the subscription rates and making them exclusive to game stream platforms.
In cost of the game itself for sure, but then you’d have costlier price in the disc too.
With the discs the scratches and storage were a bitch of a problem and later games even needed internet connection to activate games running on disc. It had pros but wasn’t all rosy either.
Part of why Sony nowadays is a game company with a movie hobby is that discs were dirrrt cheap compared to cartridges. They’d fund any stupid bullshit people wanted to make, get finished cases on shelves, and know whether consumers loved it, before N64 developers had finished negotiating a production run. Their cost per disc was measured in cents and their manufacturing turnaround was measured in days. One of the slowest and riskiest aspects of game publishing suddenly cost next to nothing.
Digital distribution isn’t necessarily cheaper per-gigabyte… but there’s no mastering. There’s no lead time. There’s not even the concept of a production run, anymore. Developers can ship whatever they want, whenever they want, to whoever they want, essentially for free.
Holy monopoly if that happened. Also imagine the damage to Japanese culture if one of their treasured companies was owned by a company in another country.
Is Arkane going to start making good games again? After Colantonio stepped down and everything after Prey I’m going to say that’s gonna be a no. Will love to be proven wrong.
