PiBoy Mini: just add a Raspberry Pi and you've got a handheld retro gaming system (www.raspberrypi.com)

Retro gaming is a massively popular Raspberry Pi application, and while loading your favourite old video games onto an SD card is pretty straightforward, building the physical shell of a gaming system can be daunting for those of us without 3D printers or design skills of any kind. PiBoy Mini bridges that gap by providing...

HidingCat,

Aren't there SBC handhelds with faster SoCs than a Pi though?

HidingCat,

Eh, another pixel art RPG. Yet another nostalgia/tribute title?

PlayStation Portal Doesn’t Have Bluetooth (gamingbolt.com)

Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation Portal, and as a cloud-exclusive Remote Play handheld device, it’s obviously got a few caveats attached. The fact that it can’t play native games – or any native media – is, of course, one of them, while it’s also been confirmed that even the cloud library of PlayStation...

HidingCat,

This is such a bizzare narrow product.

HidingCat,

Warframe's been around a long time; I know in these parts there's a certain purist view towards MTX, but Warframe does it well enough that I don't mind paying for some of it and getting a lot of game in return.

HidingCat,

I'm lazy, so I'll just look forward to the summaries. I've forgotten what Soulframe was about, even. xD

Spenty a lot of time in Warframe at one point, so though I've not picked it up in a while it did give a fair amount of fun times. One of the few F2P games I'll recommend.

HidingCat,

I've played those with my partner, they're greeat games, and very fun and not too hard.

HidingCat,

Built-in battery. :( Putting in hall-effect sensors for longevity (aside from precision) only to then have a battery that cannot be easily replaced feels like taking 2 steps forward, 1 step back.

Pssst, can I interest you in some free video games? (feddit.uk) angielski

Howdy pardners, this is a cheeky self-plug for !freegames, a community I’ve created to post limited-time full-game free giveaways. It’s been going a month or two and I’m already claiming games faster than I can play them, so come and join me and make your what-game-to-play choice paralysis worse!

HidingCat,

Since many of us are subbed anyway, they're still something of value that one doesn't have to pay extra money for. And it's really easy to forget about them, so smeg's community is doing a nice service for the rest of us.

HidingCat,

What, no, absolutely not. In fact I recall the games you get via their launcher don't even have DRM on them. I'll check them again at some point.

HidingCat,

Thanks for this, already subbed a few weeks back. Managed to snag a few games because of it too!

Denuvo security is now on Switch, including new tech to block PC Switch emulation (www.videogameschronicle.com) angielski

The first of the tools Denuvo is offering to Switch developers is Nintendo Switch Emulator Protection, a “revolutionary technology to protect games launching on Nintendo Switch from piracy”....

HidingCat,

Well, shit, sorry Switch gamers, you're going to have to put up with this steaming pile of shit us PC gamers had to do as well.

HidingCat,

Knowing how these adaptations go, I don't blame him. Good chance they'll muck it up somehow.

HidingCat,

I tried the demo, but it suffers from the same issue that tight urban 3rd person view games have: A camera that jumps a lot when swinging it around due to obstacles and walls.

HidingCat,

You mean along with Star Citizen?

HidingCat,

Point 1 is always such a killer, isn't it? I still try to get into games with friends and wife whenever possible. It's like any activity, we just try our best to schedule it, and make a commitment to trying to find said schedule when we can.

HidingCat,

The last Steam Next Fest in June had so many demos, I only had time for like 4-5. There were quite a few posts and comments (including mine) on the demos we tried.

HidingCat,

Yea, my cities' bottleneck was always getting the traffic to be able to have the hearses do their job. Somehow that's what causes a city to stop growing, compared to other factors like the economy.

HidingCat,

Right off the top of my head is Abzu. Not a hard game, simple puzzles, but really nicely crafted environments and experience. It's a bit short but it was well worth the experience. It's quite an old game by now so probably not hard to get it on sale.

HidingCat,

You're welcome; someone else mentioned Firewatch, that's definitely a good pick too!

What is up with Baldur's Gate 3?

This is not a criticism - I love how much attention this game has been getting. I’m just not understanding why BG3 has been blowing up so much. It seems like BG3 is getting more attention than all of Larian’s previous games combined (and maybe all of Obsidian’s recent crpgs as well). Traditionally crpgs have not lit the...

HidingCat,

D:OS2 was better? As you might tell if you dive into my comments history, I absolutely did not like D:OS.

Steam Deck VS rivals

I was interested in buying a Steam Deck… Until I discovered all the (apparently) better alternatives. Asus Rog Ally, OneXPlayer, Aya Neo etc… I like the idea of an handheld console and obviously I would like to have a device that can run almost everything, so the Windows based handhelds seem better than the Steam Deck. Is it...

HidingCat,

I'm not a Linux fan, but even disregarding the OS (SteamOS vs Windows), the fact that most of these "killers" don't come with touch pads of any kind makes them an instant loss. So many PC games use a mouse, I'm not using a fiddly thumbstick in its place.

HidingCat,

Yes, and funnily enough, also makes running Windows worse, since it's so mouse-driven. Why'd they do stupid decisions like that?

HidingCat,

Anything that is turn-based will work really, or doesn't rely on a real-time mechanic.

I do suggest looking at a small trackball that you can use in the meantime. It'll be useful for the times when you need a pointing device in a smaller space, for whatever reason.

HidingCat,

Some microtransactions are fine for free-to-play games and MMOs; I don't really like seeing them in full-priced games, especially if I feel it's engineered in a way to make me pay to play. It's why I avoid mobile games in general, playing them feels very predatory.

HidingCat,

Without them I wouldn't have gotten Warframe and Guild Wars 2, so I'm not so against all of them.

Dragon Age: Origins walked so Baldur’s Gate 3 could dash (www.techradar.com)

Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t the first successful attempt to marry cinematic aspirations with the traditional branching narratives and simulationist world-building of CRPGs. 2009’s Dragon Age: Origins had a very similar mission statement, offering a spiritual successor to BioWare’s earlier Baldur’s Gate titles long before...

HidingCat,

Man, BG3 is all over the place, but after my bad experience with D:OS I'm really not sure about it.

HidingCat,

It was just very combat-heavy and very challenging, and not in a very fun way. Also I remember going through a period of finding combat just to get XP to be able to get gear to upgrade to or something like that, which prolonged the dragging. Overall it was a slog, which I carried through to see if I got some payoff. Looking back the payoff for me was "Avoid Larian games".

HidingCat,

I think I had a warrior-type too? You get to pick two characters, I recall.

HidingCat,

Got Murder By Numbers free off EGS, and wife played it before so I thought I'd give it a go. It's an interesting mash-up of visual novel and nonograms. Interesting trivia, the dev's next game was Fall Guys.

HidingCat,

Man, I liked a lot of what Valheim offered, I just couldn't sink the hours into it. Felt like doing work after work.

HidingCat,

I do really like it, it's a very interesting world and the variety of characters are so fun to interact with.

HidingCat,

Seen the hype, but man, I don't feel like slogging through a 100 hour RPG at this point in my life.

HidingCat,

I definitely had fun with it, and I finished it just as I was getting tired of it, so it was the right length. Got it off another EGS giveaway a couple of years ago, I think.

HidingCat,

Eh, if one of the better incrementals is only ok to you, I'm not sure if you want to try more of the genre.

HidingCat,

Man, I just don't have time for games like these any more. I spent 100 hours in D:OS and I can't say I liked it that much.

HidingCat,

Oh yea, I used to do that when games were on discs, because sometimes the discs were slightly borked, or that the DRM with the discs were really annoying.

HidingCat,

Really sounds like it's not the game for you. You want combat and big numbers, which isn't what Disco Elysium is about.

I'm still halfway through a playthrough, but it really is a great RPG, with an interesting narrative.

HidingCat,

Remember, Game of Thrones did well, and that's not a simplified show during its peak.

What are some game genres / styles you like that aren't being made anymore, or are being mde but not very often? angielski

For me it’s first person puzzle games. I can think of maybe a dozen off the top of my head that came out in the last decade. I especially enjoy when they’re open world. The ability to just quit a puzzle that’s stumped you and go try something else for a little bit is incredibly refreshing.

HidingCat,

Good RTSes. Last great one I played was Company of Heroes.

HidingCat,

Wadjet Eye still makes them, no? There's still a few, they're not totally gone. I always keep an eye out for them on Steam.

HidingCat,

I'll go check that out, but I recall I wasn't fond of the economy generation in Supreme Commander.

HidingCat,

Generals with Zero Hour is fantastic, and I actually think it's the best in the series. While I think Company of Heroes is better, it's still a very good game.

HidingCat,

Thanks, if it's a little easier it might just be enough.

Time to Move on From PS5?

I’ve been having some thoughts lately that I would have believed crazy just a few years ago. I’m starting to think it might be time to move on from my PS5 and triple A gaming as a whole. I’ve had a PlayStation from the PS2 all the way to the latest generation of consoles. I remember fondly time spent roaming the lands of...

HidingCat,

I mean, I've never really liked consoles, but it doesn't sound like the console itself is the issue here. Most of the indies I play on PC also have a PS port, so you should be able to find a lot of non-AAA and non-overhyped titles on the PS platform.

I suppose there's also the matter of weighing the prices too; for me I always need a pretty beefy PC to begin with so having a console is just additional expense for a worse experience, but that's for me. You might have to pay quite a bit more and get a lot more games for PC's cheaper games to break even on the decision to move.
