CEO Bobby Kotick will leave Activision Blizzard on January 1, 2024 (arstechnica.com) angielski

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, emailed employees after news of Microsoft's successful $69 billion acquisition to say that he was "fully committed to helping with the transition" and that he would stay on as CEO through the end of 2023.

Striking Hollywood actors vote to authorize new walkout against video game makers (apnews.com) angielski

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Striking actors have voted to expand their walkout to include the lucrative video game market, a step that could put new pressure on Hollywood studios to make a deal with the performers who provide voices and stunts for games.

Oldest Unity game developer group breaks up over lack of trust in the company (arstechnica.com) angielski

The "first official Unity user group in the world" has announced that it is dissolving after 13 years because "the trust we used to have in the company has been completely eroded." The move comes as many developers are saying they will continue to stay away from the company's products even after last week's partial rollback of...

Report: Unity considering revenue-based fee caps, self-reported install numbers (arstechnica.com) angielski

The recently promised "changes" to Unity's controversial new per-install fee plan for developers could include hard limits based on a company's total revenue and developer self-reporting of installation numbers, according to a new report.

The answer seems to be no. I'm anticipating Sony, MS, and Nintendo's response on this. Did they even know about it? I'm very curious to see how this pans out because at this viewpoint it seems like an entire shit show.

Unity cancels town hall over reported death threats (www.theverge.com) angielski

The Unity pricing debacle has taken an unfortunate, dangerous turn. In a new report from Bloomberg, the company has reportedly canceled a town hall meeting due to what the publication called credible death threats. According to Bloomberg, Unity CEO John Riccitiello was set to address employees Thursday morning, but the...

He was the CEO of Electronic Arts when the controversial loot box monetization was added to FIFA 09. He made news when he called developers “fucking idiots” over some developers’ reluctance to introduce monetization schemes earlier in the development process. There’s also the infamous clip of Riccitiello talking during a shareholder call about charging Battlefield players a dollar to reload their guns.

Look at this guy...I couldn't read all of the Bloomberg article due to paywall, so I don't know if this jackass actually provided proof of these "death threats."

While I don't condone them, it seems awfully convenient that an executive who's known to stir controversy with his monetization strategies received "alleged" death threats. I have a hard time believing it without proof because this guy is a sleaze ball greedy mofo.

There might be a reason people freak out about death threats...

Impressions: Starfield’s sheer scale is already giving me vertigo (arstechnica.com) angielski

There's a quote from Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. “Space is big,” he writes. “You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the drug store, but that's just peanuts to...

No doubt...

Are we going to get 25,000 planets with repeating assets and only one town? I'll have to take your word for it, I don't have a platform to play it.

PlayStation Portal Doesn’t Have Bluetooth (gamingbolt.com)

Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation Portal, and as a cloud-exclusive Remote Play handheld device, it’s obviously got a few caveats attached. The fact that it can’t play native games – or any native media – is, of course, one of them, while it’s also been confirmed that even the cloud library of PlayStation...

battery life will be comparable to the DualSense controller, which would mean roughly 8-9 hours

Never has my DualSense controller's battery lasted 8-9 hours, especially when haptic feedback is enabled.

That's too bad. I use a cradle charger with room for two controllers, so I always have one in standby.

EDIT

The setup works very well.

They’re not. Most of the videos and articles I’ve read specifically mention Elden Ring and TotK as other examples.

They had BUCKETS of funding from wizards of the Coast for this. They also had a massive studio with more than 400 people working on it.

They had the IP; they did not receive a single cent from WotC. They funded the game with money from their previous games, and in fact, they paid WotC for the IP.

Madison_rogue,
@Madison_rogue@kbin.social avatar

It took Bungie years to do this for Destiny; Larian immediately begins to work on it in a couple weeks after release.

I love this studio, and how it's upending the AAA gaming standard. About time. I'm definitely buying it when it comes out on the PS5.

It's not a burn; it's a poorly constructed comment made out of context. The author's criticism on Diablo 4 is based within the context of Baldur's Gate 3's release. The review for D4 was written before BG3 was released.

Good news everyone!

Seriously, this is great to hear. Awesome that Larian is supporting and acknowledging their entire staff.

I would say just leave those aspects out of the game, or put strict limitations on their usage. You could isolate higher magic abilities to specific items (e.g. deck of many things).

It is complex, however I think if you look to games like Neverwinter as a template for moving forward (absent microtransactions).

Then blame execs and showrunners, not the audience. American audiences are savvier than he thinks, just because he had one pitch that didn't fare well with American audiences doesn't mean that they won't embrace more complicated elements of The Witcher.

Plus it just sounds sad; blame audiences for something you, as a producer, can't effectively produce.

I didn't say he was a showrunner.

I'm definitely excited for the 8TB SSD support. My 2 TB SSD is 3/4 full.

There's a lot of "it depends" in regards to a game that is fully completed at 25-30 hours. If Ubisoft is going to charge $70 USD for the game, along with an additional Deluxe Edition that costs an extra $30, I'm probably not going to buy it on release unless the story is phenomenal, and it's replayable.

I'd be the first to agree that the more recent releases (especially Valhalla) have been too expansive. The only thing that kept my interest with Odyssey and Origins were the settings (I love ancient Greece and Egypt). I think a 50-60 hour game is adequate for a AAA game like Assassin's Creed.

Madison_rogue,

His viewpoint is just like the producers the writers and actors are striking against; that it's all a commodity to be consumed and he's not invested in the creative process or supporting the talent that creates movies & television. As long as Hollywood churns out media (regardless of its quality), this guy is all there for it.

Bungie Pulling Back on Destiny 2 Reddit Responses Until 'Everyone Can Feel Safe Again' (gamerant.com) angielski
