I think gamers as a whole, though specifically those in niche communities, need to take a long and hard look at themselves. We should celebrate the volunteers that create wonderful content for us, generally with no financial gain. Instead, commonly, there are communities that criticize and tear down every little thing they can...
I’m not a gamer. I play games, but I’m not a Gamerᵀᴹ. I noped out of the “community” a long time ago.
I’m a little curious where she’s getting the harassment from. If it’s from twitter, I don’t know what to tell her. It’s designed to amplify hate and anxiety. If it’s from lan parties or irl shit, yeah, I haven’t experienced it, but I have seen that to a degree.
edit: Wait. Is the “harassment” coming from needy fans asking her to tweak her work for their liking? That’s a little different from what I assumed this was about. I’m not going to side with the community nagging her for tweaks, but if she’s creating this for herself, she needs to disengage from those types. If she’s creating these mods, putting them out online and expecting only positive comments, I don’t know what to tell her. This is something all big modders and have to deal with.
Yeah and someone else in this threat brought up that there’s another side to the discord drama. Frankly, this case is too messy to untangle. I can’t tell if she’s being completely honest or if all this could have been prevented of she set better boundaries. Regardless, I don’t think it speaks to the greater issues in “gaming culture”.
Gabe, you created an obligation when you ended Episode 2 on a cliff hanger. You should have just let Marc Laidlaw and the game devs just make more games.
As long as it had kept the core writers, I’m sure everyone would be happy. Hell, any “innovation” is being handled by the modding continuity. Breadman of Entropy: Zero created a more fun combat loop then any of the HL2 games have. Singularity has a better physics weapons just by being able to use it independent of the selected weapon and making the object transparent.
Half-Life 2 doesn’t even have a good combat loop. Half-Life 1 has more variety in the weapons and the map team in HL1 actually talked to the AI team. Notice how the combine just stand in doorways or out in the open? It’s lost, but I once saw a video showing that the combine can flank the player and do other complex maneuvers if the maps are properly designed, but Gabe was too obsessed with the Gravity Gun and everything else suffered. The “puzzles” are all either busy work or another seesaw task. I remember being hyped when Gabe said that Ep2 would have the biggest physics puzzle in it, but it ended up just being a huge seesaw “puzzle” that was solved just by clearing the cars off of it.
Every time I do a Half Life replay, I always end up getting bored in HL2 and skip to the community made stuff. Half-life Echoes and Entropy: Zero are musts.
There are so many landmark games. I’d say HL1 was more influential then HL2 anyway. Hell, I’d say Portal did more for first person puzzle games then HL2 did for FPS games.
It just handicapped itself by making the gravity gun such busy work and ignoring other aspects.
Hey, here’s this cool thing. You can summon Antlions to fight with you, but only in two areas and never again. Oh, that boss fight in Ep2 where you could have gotten it again? Nope, but here’s a Defend Against Waves set piece instead.
What I’m saying is that the combat loop got ignored for the gravity gun. Where’s the Gluon Gun? Why is the Tau Cannon only mounted to the buggy? Why are both the SMG and AR2 full auto, spread weapons? If we’re doing wide open areas, the AR2 should really have a tighter spread for long range engagements.
Halo did wide open environments, did vehicles with mouse or analog stick steering was a joy to drive and actually used them in more then one area before HL2. Keyboard steering sucks.
What HL2 excels at is presentation of the story. It’s really not that deep of a story.
Also, never liked CS or military shooters, so that’s not exactly a going to sell me. And don’t get me started on the hat shit.
You know, I knew the next HL game to come out after Ep2 would be a VR title. It was the most obvious direction Valve could go considering Gabe treats the HL series as a tech demo. Seriously, I think out of anyone at Valve, he has the least respect for the franchise. What I didn’t predict that it would a a VR exclusive title and that it would retcon the ending of Ep2 so a character that died(and who’s VA had died), would be alive again. Hell, they didn’t even ask one of the MC’s original VA to reprise her role(or cast into a different character if the age was an issue).
I have way more trust in the fan community to continue the story. Entropy: Zero took some cues from Epistle 3, so I hope the breadman and the Project Borealis are sharing notes, so the can have a shared continuity. I really, really liked the voiced MC of Entropy: Zero and the combat loop, with more enemy types and weapons was superb.
I think that’s the thing that annoys me the most. Sometimes, a game doesn’t get a sequel because sales were bad or the studio was bought out or even went bankrupt. Here, it’s just because the guy running the company doesn’t feel like it. They have a constant stream of free money from Steam sales to fall back on, so why not just let your game devs do something? I haven’t kept up to date, but wasn’t there this huge gap of time where none of the TF2 devs had logged and played any TF2?
Old Bungie also opened up the Marathon engine and released the assets before the Microsoft takeover. You can play that game on any modern platform while Oni is lingering in abandonedware land, unplayable and unprofitable.
Considering the Catholic Church banned chess and excommunicated several priests who were caught playing it, I’d believe it. But of course, kiddy diddling is just fine.
Rebellious priests invented the folding chess set because of the ban actually.
Yeah, I’ve started playing around with Proton and Heroic Launcher(Proton or Wine) and have had pretty good resaults. The only games games I haven’t been able to get running were very old games with who knows what going on. I don’t know if I should be surprised that HROT works without any issues.
Also, plenty of AAA games never see their bugs get patched. I got stuck in a room in Dead Space for about 20 minutes trying to figure out the puzzle when it was just the boss that failed to load. This was a documented bug that was reported five years earlier.
Also, this isn’t what a pitchfork parade looks like. It’s not nearly that important.
How you phrase things is also important. Never having played WoW, they came across as arrogant and out of touch. Something that’s only been reinforced by their further actions. The “Do you guys not have phones?” comment is just the sequel. The issues only be more and more serious since then.
Arena Shooters. Any Halo, Unreal Tournament, Quake. I don’t even care about it being a prize tournament. I’d just like a lan party.
Just so that we’re playing the game. I don’t want to hear about how you think video games are too sexist/not sexist enough. I just want to shoot a flak cannon into someone’s face.
At a lan party? It’s definitely the other group that’s the problem. Hearing the same handful of sexist jokes ever time a woman shows up and they wonder why they never stick around. This is what I actually saw, not a hypothetical.
It’s playable on MCC, but the LAN Party experience is what I miss. Games, Pizza, Energy Drinks into the night. Use to do them monthly though high school. There were also pc lan parties with UT2k4 mainly and eQuake occasionally.
Panzer Dragoon. I only played and finished Panzer Dragoon Orta for the XBox when it came out. I tried the included original game, but I had a hard time telling depth and perception with the old graphics.

Prodeus is still EA, but it has a solid first episode with good Co-op gameplay if you’re into retro style shooters.
If you really want to go old school, OG Doom from 1993 and Bungie’s Marathon Trilogy(1994-96) support co-op. I haven’t tried Doom yet, but you do need to be technical to figure out Marathon co-op.
If you’re counting the shields, Bungie’s Oni did it first.
Halo also had vehicles in 2001. Bf1942 came out in 2002. Other FPS games have had vehicles before that, but they were always clunky. Hell, there’s a vehicle section in Shadow Warrior(1997).
This really does not sound healthy. The game is released, for a certain amount of money. If people don’t like what they get for their money, they simply should not buy it....
Things aren’t looking good for me. I’m a few levels into Selaco, a new FPS out now on Steam, and I’m stuck behind a bar as a group of sci-fi soldiers unload their rifles and shotguns into my hiding spot. I’m also low on health. So yeah, a bad spot to be in. I take a deep breath and try something....
Love me Serious Sam. Really wish Croteam wouldn’t try to be a AAA studio. SS4 only real issue was it was an optimized mess. Great game mechanics, great levels, great music, great writing and VA work, but uglier and more stuttery then their previous games. They switched to using Unreal Engine for Talos 2, so I’m guessing they prioritized on just making the game rather then trying to make their own game engine, which had previously been a point of pride for them. Really looking for to their future games. Expecting a Talos 2 expansion before a new Sam game, but looking forward regardless.
If anyone wants a complete GZDoom game (or 2 or 3 depending on how your counting) right now to try, Hedon is really great. Also, made by a solo dev(music and VA work was outsourced), so absolute flex on AAA game companies.
I guess I also missed the part about being a phone peasant. Not having a gaming PC and not having ANY PC are different. Personally, I’d rather have a bargain bin PC to play indie titles then a console.
If you can get a clue as to what’s going on, message the dev on steam. It’s one guy, so they probably don’t know about the issue. For a for a little while, if you had Heretic loaded in GZDoom, it would load that instead of the Hedon.
You also can’t MTX a Half Life 3 game to hell and back. Years ago, I knew the next Half Life game would be VR. They’ve always used the Half Life games to showcase new tech or models(the Episodes). Didn’t realize it would be VR Exclusive or a prequel.
At least the community has given up and is producing their own sequels and spinoffs.
Revolution is flat out better then most AAA retail games, both in quality and length.
Portal Stories: Mel is also something to try out. There’s some small references to Mel in Revolution, but playing Mel before Revolution isn’t necessary, but recommended.
So what is it about gen AI that actually bothers people?
It’s being used corporate suits to replace talented artists, writers, programmers, and voice actors and make their shareholders happy. Although this is Ubisoft, so they already making substandard products anyway. I mean, how do you fuck up the login system for your online table top games as much as they did?
