My biggest issues were that the world building felt so lazy, in that every faction essentially boiled down to Space America in various aspects. You got the Space American Liberal Authoritarian State, you got the Space American Cowboys, the Space American Technocrats, and the Space American Religious Fundamentalists. I found all of these factions kinda repugnant for one reason or another, and uninspired to boot, and so I never felt a pull to experience the world on a deeper level once I had gotten tired of the regular gameplay.
Really wild to go from this vibe at the end of the seventh generation of consoles to the one we’re at now. For me, and many other people that like high quality gaming experiences, mobile games have completely vanished.
The Switch 2 footage of Elden Ring did look better than what I can get out of my Steam Deck. I wouldn’t be surprised if it has a performance advantage (perhaps thanks to native DLSS and frame generation) for the next year or two.
Yeah, that would be wise, but by the same token since Lemmy is a bit smaller the amount of people with things to say in those communities would be smaller overall too.

The Quest 2 and 3 finally are a properly viable platform that millions of people use, but it still feels like Meta doesn’t want it to be a “Microsoft’s Xbox” sort of situation, they still want it to be a “Google’s Android” situation instead. It’s been an utterly bizarre time watching all of this occur in real time as someone that bought her first headset in 2017; their priorities have always been completely misaligned with the achievements they’re actually making.
Excellent read. Makes me wonder of the forgotten or underappreciated place of games that are meant to only take a few hours and then exit your life forever: games like Journey and others that take only a few hours to beat. They’re completely antithetical to this style of design.
My shortlist is probably WipEout Pulse (I love how that entire series feels like a game made out of electronic music, the same way Doom is made out of metal), WipEout 2048 (for the same reason, but I played it even more), Forza Motorsport 2 (cuz it had a huge influence on my taste at a very young age), and then maybe Gran Turismo 5?
As a sidenote, I’m very impressed by how much Avowed is reminding me of some of my favourite memories playing Fable I and II back in the day. It feels like the same sort of action RPG, with the blending of swords, bows/guns, and magic. Certainly an unexpected treat, given the more obvious Skyrim comparisons that game has been getting.
I think it’s very interesting to note that mainstream consoles like the Switch or PS5 have massive ad campaigns behind them, expensive television spots, and a constant churn of new exclusives that they’re using to keep themselves in the conversation. The Steam Deck certainly had an ad campaign, but it feels impressive to me that they managed to make those numbers happen mostly just through throwing up an announcement on the Steam front page and then having it review well once it found its way into critics’ hands.
I’ve played Avowed for 15 hours, and this is the most fun I’ve had in an RPG since Skyrim released. It might not be as good as Skyrim, but it has a very similar feel for me, and I’ve encountered zero bugs so far. I’m having an absolute blast!...
I’m genuinely kinda obsessed with it right now. Feel like they made a special one just for me. A perfect mix of my two childhood RPG favourites: Skyrim and Fable II.
Both were live service; one at Bend, one at Bluepoint. Bluepoint was helping work on God of War: Ragnarok until 2022, at which point they were developing this now-cancelled God of War live service game.
Finally the live service bubble is popping.
I hope the developers working on these projects get put on to something else, instead of shown the door as is so often the case.
I just got finished with beating Riven for the first time. I adored the way the game seeped into my real life with pages of notes about the world I was discovering. Are there any other games that can match this feeling? That really work best when you have a journal in hand?
I went ahead and bought a bunch of indie games, picked up Darkchaser, Oxygen Not Included, and UFO50, and also grabbed Cities: Skylines. Got used to the launch prices of some AAA games, buying these discounted low-priced games really doesn’t hurt much....
Completely unique and very difficult to experience with alternative hardware nowadays (compared to the PSP which can be played on nearly everything). The games library is incredibly unique because small budget games still had a big chance to succeed.
I’ve been a big Bethesda fan for years, no one else makes games that quite come close to their very simulationist style. I like Starfield, and now that it’s a year after launch I have finally found my angle on it to get the enjoyment out of it that I wanted. I think it’s a good game.
But it’s also a flawed game, it’s clearly not for you, and that’s okay too.
Every PSP I own must have the following games ready to go at any time:
-Lumines
-Rock Band Unplugged
-Patapon 2
-WipEout Pulse
-Final Fantasy: Crystal Defenders (gorgeous small tower defense game, but with enough strategy behind it for hours of play)
I acquired my 3DS before the first price drop and unfortunately I never really appreciated it while I had it. It was the first place I played Ocarina of Time, which was a really fantastic experience that I was probably too young to really appreciate at the time. I never got around to playing A Link Between Worlds unfortunately. Beyond that my other favourite was Mario Kart 7. There are a lot of games that I now wish I had picked up but didn’t get a chance to.
The 3DS is also really interesting as it’s currently the last Nintendo handheld that can fit in a pocket. That era of portable consoles has largely passed out of favour (this is why I’ve started collecting PSP Go consoles). A lot of the best 3DS games have been somewhat overshadowed by the Switch now. I feel like its game library may be remembered similarly to the Game Boy Advance, more iterating on older franchises rather than having its own hugely impressive identity.
