Walden Henry’ego Davida Thoreau to książka, która udowadnia, że nawet mieszkając kilka kilometrów od miasta, z dostępem do ciepłego obiadu u ciotki, można uważać się za samotnika i filozofa natury. Autor z wielkim zapałem opowiada o swoim heroicznym eksperymencie życia w lesie – w drewnianej chacie, którą sam zbudował (choć trochę pomogli znajomi), otoczony przyrodą, ciszą i… częstymi wizytami w Concord.
Lektura momentami przypomina coś pomiędzy poradnikiem “jak żyć lepiej niż wszyscy” a kazaniem wygłoszonym przez człowieka, który właśnie odkrył, że można upiec chleb i spać na podłodze. Thoreau z zapałem dzieli się spostrzeżeniami, które dla niego są rewolucyjne, a dla reszty świata – raczej oczywiste. No ale cóż – najwyraźniej kontakt z naturą działa najlepiej, gdy można wrócić na obiad do mamy.
Podsumowując: Walden to książka pełna pięknych opisów przyrody, głębokich myśli i jeszcze głębszego samozadowolenia. Polecana wszystkim, którzy chcą poczuć się winni, że mają łóżko, piekarnik i znajomych. Dla pozostałych – ciekawostka literacka z kategorii „życie na własnych warunkach, ale z ubezpieczeniem”.
