Baldur’s Gate III just came out and it’s an absolutely phenomenal RPG
Octopath Traveler II is also a really great RPG
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom came out earlier this year, which was also amazing, though obviously that’s (officially) only on Switch
Final Fantasy XVI was super fun, but that one is a PlayStation 5 exclusive
Then there is Starfield, the big new Bethesda game is space
A new Yakuza (though the series is being renamed to “like a dragon” now) game is coming out later this year as well (it’s a very storied game series though, if you’re not familiar with it, I’d suggest starting with either Yakuza 0 or Judgment)
Early this year there was actually another Like a Dragon game, Like a Dragon: Ishin, which is also great
A new Assassin’s Creed comes out soon as well, which is going back to a more traditional gameplay loop (recent entries were RPG-like, and this is going to be more stealth focused again like AC1-Unity)
Armored Core 6 is supposedly also a really good game where you build your mech to fight big enemies (though I personally don’t know much about that game)
Hi-Fi Rush was a really really good game, it’s a sort of rhythm adventure game where you have to fight in the beat of the music.
Ubisoft is also releasing their Avatar (blue Aliens, not the air bender) game late this year (December if I’m not mistaken), which should scratch your FarCry itch, I’d say.
I’m sure there are more that I either forgot or aren’t necessarily my wheelhouse, but those are the big ones
Awesome rundown — thank you 🙏 I enjoyed the only Assassin’s Creed I played (Egypt one) so a new one coming out is exciting! The Bulder’s Gate game definitely sounds like a hit though I’ve not played many RPGs in the past. Might also check out that rhythm game — sounds like a novel idea for a game, which is always refreshing.
I’ve tried it a couple of times based on all the raving reviews, but couldn’t stand the lack of checkpoints. Died against a boss about 5 times and had to walk all the way back from town was just very annoying and not relaxing to me. I don’t mind dying, eg I love Ori and don’t mind dying in hard section, as long as there are checkpoints.
You find the missing letter, which is the last letter of the alphabet, and replace the asterisk with it. Then you go on redeem.microsoft.com and use it
Personally, I’m not a fan of this trend that’s been semi-standard since at least Halo: Reach. The whole silent protagonist thing really takes me out of the game; I would much rather hear any voice for my character.
Contrast this with, say, Cyberpunk 2077 where the main character talks quite a bit. This makes me feel way more like a real person in the game world.
I don’t really want to hear my character talk in an RPG where I am making the character and supposedly have my own background, look and sound in mind and am the one selecting what that character says. Unless if they have tons of different voices, like old Bioware RPGs did, I would prefer to just read it myself and give whatever voice I want. It immerses me in the game much more, where I feel like the character I am playing because I am given opportunity to say the dialogue choices my self.
I think it all depends on what sort of game you have, specifically if it is story driven or immersion/exploration driven.
Halo Reach is story driven and would have absolutely benefitted from a voice. Mass Effect was primarily story driven and the voiced protag worked great.
Fallout 4 is the opposite and a silent protag would have been better as silent, like in Fallout 3 or Elder Scrolls games.
“Welcome to our RPG, please select your dialogue options:
Yes
sarcastic yes
funny yes
yes but later
Enjoy your ‘role play’”
Fallout 4 was a nightmare from a character standpoint. I don’t have much faith in Bethesda writing, but at least we’ll be able to have more options than the above. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll even have skill checks back.
I find talking protagonists in RPGs with customizable characters a two edged sword. It can work out great, but if your voice not fit the character you're playing, or is even highly dislikable for you, then it becomes a real big issue in regards to immersion and enjoyment. Silent protagonists allow you to use a specific headvoice for your character.
Only some are purchasable at the moment. Last I checked there’s a rumored remake being done or something so that might be why they were removed, but I have no clue really.
I’m still mad they killed friends and family plan. If they had offered it here I would have gladly paid but no way I’m buying game pass three times for my whole family
