NotTheOnlyGamer, w Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a premium release priced at $70
@NotTheOnlyGamer@kbin.social avatar

Makes me glad I don't play shooters.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

That's fine, because there aren't many of them anymore.

CarlsIII, w OK Boomer Shooter: How indie games breathed new life into a dying genre

Can we start coming up with inaccurate names for every genre? Maybe battle royales can be called “Greatest Generation Turn-Based Puzzlevanias.”

EnderWi99in,

Boomer shooter isn't really about the generational boomers but that the games have a lot of "booms". It says it right at the top of the article. Boomers never even played video games. That era was all Gen X and old Millennials so it wouldn't even make sense that way.

CarlsIII,

Finally, a genre of games with explosions in them.

It’s still a terrible name, and it is clearly meant to make you think of baby-boomers (the op is literally titled “OK Boomer Shooter.”) Also, the fact that there are things that go ‘boom’ in this game is not in any way the defining trait that separates them from other FPS’s, but rather that they are more fast-paced than other more realistic FPS’s. And even if you convince me otherwise on that point, I still hate the name and wish nobody would use it!

style99, w The Main Lesson From ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Should Be ‘People Hate Microtransactions’
@style99@kbin.social avatar

Too bad game devs don't care. They make more farming rich morons using micros and FOMO than they could dream of making, otherwise.

Poob,

Hey, don’t blame us poor devs for the decisions that get forced upon us

JonEFive,

Hot take: mtx are a good thing as long as they don’t cause a significant imbalance in gameplay. There’s a reason the price of a AAA game has remained roughly $60 for nearly two decades in spite of increasing development costs and inflation.

People who purchase in game add-ons subsidize those who don’t.

jon, w The Pokémon Company Having ‘Conversations’ About Its 'Constant' Release Schedule - IGN
@jon@kbin.social avatar

Either:

  1. Hire more staff to do more development/QA in a shorter timespan
  2. Delay release schedule to not be annual releases
  3. Reduce game scope to something the team can accomplish

Gamefreak cannot keep its historically small team size while trying to make large, open world titles that release annually. Tears of the Kingdom tool over 5 years to develop, and that was working with pre-existing assets. Gamefreak's model is not sustainable.

Gordon_Freeman, (edited )
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

Gamefreak cannot keep its historically small team size while trying to make large, open world titles that release annually

Define "small". For Sword and Shield they had around 1000 workers, according to Ohmori, the game's director.

With 200 being from Game Freak, some from Creatures Inc. (they make the 3D models and send them to Game Freak) Debugging and Quality Control is externalized

So, yeah. The number being close to a thousand, that of course includes all the different functions like marketing and PR and everyone that would be associated with the game ahead of release. But I think at Game Freak, really the core team of people that worked on the game was around 200 people. And of course, Creatures is another partner company that develops 3D models of the Pokémon. There are various teams that handle debugging at our partner companies as well. So there’s a lot of people involved and I think in terms of just the sheer number of the most resources required to make something happen for the development, it was definitely more on the graphical side of things.

https://www.polygon.com/interviews/2019/10/24/20929597/game-freak-explains-the-1000-staff-missing-creatures-and-leek-size-of-pokemon-sword-and-shield

So it's not like Game Freak does everything for the game. They don't have to do the 3D models that will be used in the game nor debugging

And they hired more for Scarlet and Violet iirc

Pisodeuorrior, w OK Boomer Shooter: How indie games breathed new life into a dying genre

Fucking hell this is super weird. I was going through my comments history, and one of them was "what's a boomer shooter?"in reply to someone who mentioned the term a few weeks ago.

Since it wasn't replied I looked it up like a minute ago, and came across this very article.

The very first thread I clicked on after I came back to my feed was this one :0

ampersandrew, w Microsoft’s Xbox Series S Parity Demands Are Now Handing Sony Free Wins
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

I don't know, you may as well say the same thing about the Switch and every port it gets. The S has its strengths and shockingly few weaknesses given those strengths.

conciselyverbose,

The switch is a handheld and the ports it gets are for that reason. It wouldn't have sold enough to get basically anything third party if it was the same device without portability (see BOTW as a system seller when it literally already existed), and it still doesn't really get that many current gen demanding ports.

The fact that there's a worse Xbox you're required to support when the Xbox already lacks some of the asset loading tricks of the PS5 and has less units sold on top of it isn't something developers can just ignore. BG3 really isn't all that demanding for a next gen open world game, and compromising your vision to force it onto a worse console isn't something people want to do.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

The Xbox Series S is a cheap lower-resolution Xbox, and the ports it gets are for that reason. The parity scales well for most games and reduces consumer confusion.

BG3 really isn't all that demanding for a next gen open world game

Most games these days, regrettably, don't bother with split-screen multiplayer, and definitely not with the worst-case scenarios of how far apart the two players can be in that world, which is their hurdle right now.

conciselyverbose, (edited )

Parity here isn't on a scale. It's a binary trait. Either they are the same or one is worse than the other. The shitty XBOX does not have CPU parity with the real one, and it's a serious limitation that effectively means that the "good" Xbox also has that worse CPU in terms of game design. It will obviously still get some games, but it's losing games that it would otherwise get because it has nothing in common with a next gen system.

Split screen being the specific thing that BG3 is struggling to do isn't the point. It's merely a symptom. For a next gen open world game, split screen BG3 is still not that demanding. The fact that all the real action is turn based makes it far easier to make run than a similarly dense real time game with real time physics demands, and the fact that the Xbox S can't handle it is a very strong example that it's a piece of shit.

ampersandrew, (edited )
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Microsoft wouldn't have nearly the install base without the Series S, and developers can either target that platform or not, just like the Switch, because people bought it for its own strengths. If they want to scale their games up to a spec such that it runs on PlayStation but not Xbox, they're welcome to, but they lose access to a large pool of customers, like those who can stomach paying $300 for a console but not $500. There are plenty of other next gen open world games that work on Xbox.

Also, your analysis on how it should perform isn't really based in reality. We can go to interviews where the Swen Vincke calls out the way their game does split-screen specifically. And besides, at this point, Xbox engineers are involved, and BG3 will run on Xbox, though likely just next year.

conciselyverbose,

It has no strengths, and the install base is shit.

The switch only gets away with being a last gen console because it's a handheld. The Series S has all the performance benefits of a last gen console with the install base of one that released 5 minutes ago.

There is no "the way they do split screen". BG3 while running split screen is not a game that should make a current gen console struggle in any way. It makes the S struggle because it's not a current gen worth of hardware.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

$300, access to Game Pass, and playing nearly every new game that comes out for far cheaper are its strengths.

There is no "the way they do split screen".

This is just a strange argument to make in the face of interviews and contradictory evidence of other modern games running on the Series S.

ashamam,
@ashamam@kbin.social avatar

Its not the CPU that is the issue anyway. Its the memory both size and bandwidth. Microsoft addressed the size somewhat by making some more RAM available but that doesn't address the bandwidth. The issue is developers are hitting limits in shifting assets around as compared to the X. Its why you see significant texture differences and skipped RT in titles.

I don't have a crystal ball for how it will play out in the second half of the generation but you would have to think it is more likely to become a bigger issue than not. Its also imho another reason why there won't be a Pro series console. More likely they sunset the generation faster instead and just go with a whole new generation that trumps the PS5 pro. Because at least they know that the existence of a PS5 pro extends out the Sony generation enough to give them a window to do this. Or, and this would be a massive shame, this is the last Xbox hardware generation. I don't think its likely but maybe enough generations of trailing marketshare means the bean counters give up on that aspect of it.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

We already saw through court documents that Pro-or-similar consoles are expected. The difference with Microsoft is if they stick to generations like they implied they wouldn't. You could get creative with you how you count Xbox consoles and say, "Here's the Xbox 6X and Xbox 6S", where 6 is a larger number than the PlayStation's 5, which we know is a strategy that works. Out of the gate, very few games would require that larger hardware, and unlike PlayStation, purchasing an Xbox game once gets you the upgraded version on new hardware. I imagined this is the direction they were headed in when this generation was designed, but 2020 sure did change the trajectory of all sorts of things even if I'm right. I also seriously doubt they're interested in leaving the console space given the acquisitions they've made in the past few years.

maybe enough generations of trailing marketshare

The 360/PS3 generation was extremely close, and they had the lead for most of it.

Cruxifux, w Miyamoto wonders why Pikmin hasn't sold more and why people think the games are difficult

It’s the time limit.

That’s it.

People hate time limits in games like this.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

And yet removing the time limit was disastrous for my enjoyment of Pikmin.

Katana314,

I feel like it’s a lot like the weapon breaking in Breath of the Wild - one of those systems that imposes heavy limits on players to enforce their creativity and flexibility in their approach.

I know a lot of people approach every game in a completionist, meticulous way where they do every quest, never use any consumable items, etc; and it often ruins the fun. It’s also why Ubisoft had the somewhat crazy idea in Far Cry 5 of actually forcing you to do story missions after game progress, trying to use designer mechanics to push some variety into people’s game sessions.

In Pikmin’s case, and I think Dead Rising / Persona too, the time limit is meant to get you to prioritize path planning so you get as much as you can done in a certain span. The core gameplay of Pikmin just isn’t all that interactive when you have all the time in the world for it - it’s built around the benefits of delegation and synchronization.

TwilightVulpine,

I haven't played Pikmin but when it comes to BotW/TotK I still would prefer if weapons didn't break. Seems to me that it creates grind and it takes away flexibility, because more situational options take the same slots as raw power, and get spent just as quickly. Comes to mind also how XCom 2 insisted on turn limits, and one of the first mods it got was to remove the turn limits.

Sometimes designers insist on certain limits to prevent that players "optimize the fun away" but they don't realize that some players legitimately do have more fun without those limits.

Parallax,

I feel the same way. My current BoTW save has a bunch of semi-unique or rare weapons in my inventory and I don't have any more slots. Whenever I want to fight something now I have to ask myself "which thing should I break and never get back?"

Oh some basic mobs to clear? Oh well, all I have are these super high damage weapons. It discourages me from getting into fights because I feel like my weapons aren't balanced for the enemies at hand, I gotta save them for tougher fights.

ThunderingJerboa,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

Comes to mind also how XCom 2 insisted on turn limits,

I mean I would argue sure they were a bit too tight and I'm 100% down for increasing them but Xcom (2013) did have a problem with overwatch creep. Where people were legitimately optimizing the fun out of the game. Time limits force you to make less than optimal decisions where it works very well with the setting of Xcom 2 where you are a rebellion force, you don't have the luxury of taking things at your pace. You need to strike and get out before a larger response force come in to take you out. The only negative to the turn limits is you being forced to trigger pods early and pods waking up give them a free move action.

TwilightVulpine,

I get the reasoning in theory, but... it doesn't work for everyone.

Speaking for myself, I don't appreciate the anxiety. I only played XCom EU but the timed missions were the ones I hated the most. I just didn't want to play a game that was just that every time. It doesn't make me thrilled, it makes me stressed. I do actually want to inch my way through every mission, so I can stay prepared for danger, since the game will pop out a bunch of enemies with free actions at any moment. I felt like the commander of an elite team whenever I managed to badly damage any enemy even before they got the chance to attack.

When they "fixed" me "optimizing the fun out of the game", they just took me out of the game entirely. What they see as fun or not fun is not universal.

Some might say that if this is how I think maybe that's not the game for me. But if having both possibilities is an alternative, why shouldn't I be able to play the way I actually like it?

Homeschooled316, w Microsoft’s Xbox Series S Parity Demands Are Now Handing Sony Free Wins

BG3 is one of my favorite games, but there is nothing technologically groundbreaking about it. As hardware improves, studios often prefer to use the new leeway to neglect optimization, which is a nightmare scenario for consumers who are forced to upgrade endlessly for no reason. It’s understandable that smaller studios may need to make that sacrifice, but there should be SOME penalty for it or it will get out of hand. The series S parity requirements provides some small penalization that I hope continues for generations to come.

EvilMonkeySlayer,

I guarantee you it may not be graphically groundbreaking, but there will be some engine technology stuff for handling the world state that likely are.

CIWS-30, w The Main Lesson From ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Should Be ‘People Hate Microtransactions’

We also like games that ask players for feedback, then take it and test it in the game and improve the game with it if it works. As opposed to recycling the same ubisoft tower climbing + shallow collectible fetch quest-a-thon for the 100th time while wondering why people are getting bored and not buying the sequels.

luthis, w The Main Lesson From ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Should Be ‘People Hate Microtransactions’

Author got burned bad in the comments:

8 hours ago

“Instead of getting more accepting of microtransactions these days because they’ve become so normalized, I’m moving the opposite direction. I genuinely resent Diablo 4 for sinking so, so much work into its $15-30 armor sets in the store when they could have been farmable in the game, and in-game sets are already starting to fall behind in the seasonal model.”

You clearly don’t resent it that much, considering you gave Diablo 4 a 9/10.

Madison_rogue,
@Madison_rogue@kbin.social avatar

It's not a burn; it's a poorly constructed comment made out of context. The author's criticism on Diablo 4 is based within the context of Baldur's Gate 3's release. The review for D4 was written before BG3 was released.
