manapropos, w Weekly what have you been playing discussion - week of September, 11, 2023

I just got back into San Andreas Multiplayer with a buddy of mine. It’s amazing how advanced the servers are these days in terms of scripting

Baldurs gate 3, just beat the game and now I’m going for a tactician run. The wife and I have also been playing pit people co op. We hooked up her steam deck to the living room TV and have been looking for more couch co op games!

Just DRG, waiting for the ocotoberfest event so I can grind 2x faster and finish the battle pass.

ClumZy,

DRG is so addictive, the only game to ever top L4D2 imo

figjam, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?

I played Earthbound as a kid and got stuck in a golem without the item needed to get out. Since I got it used I didn’t have the game guide. No idea how much stuff I missed but I never picked it up again.

abraxas,

I remember that, and I remember finding a way out too. I just don’t remember what it was.

I’m pretty sure that’s not a full-on softlock. Just so bad it feels like one if you miss something.

Swarfega, w Steam's Oldest User Accounts Turn 20, Valve Celebrates With Special Digital Badges - IGN

I’m like 3120 or something to sign up. That day was a complete mess as everyone signing up and trying to download their games DDoSed the platform. At that time Steam was just a client to download and play Valve games.

I was younger then and had my own domain thinking I was cool but it is actually shit and uses leet speak. I’m stuck with that forever now as my account name. Sigh.

    Maestro, w Steam players hate NBA 2K24 almost as much as they hate Overwatch 2

    Stupid question: why call it 2K24 instead of 2024? It's the same amount of characters...

    The company is called 2K. Also, it is their "brand" since forever e.g. 2K5 for the 2005 one

    It also distinguishes them from EA’s sports titles. Or at least, it did, when they both made games for the same sports.

    also if you’ve ever asked a 2k player what game they play, they’ll often just say 2k without the year since it almost doesn’t matter

    My hope is that people leave and make a new studio and some new IP’s. These large publishers buying everything and then running into the ground due to endess growth is tiring.

    I hope they get the audio problems sorted. They do hilarious shit but Tom’s robotic voice cutting out all the time makes it a hard listen.

    BTW, they had the Narrator, Amelia Tyler, as a guest for their third stream. She’s a friend of Neil.

    Cavemanfreak,

    He has pinned a comment on the first video saying audio won’t be a problem going forward. Not sure if that’s for the videos already out, or for a new batch of videos though, haven’t seen the first batch yet.

    nekusoul, w What are some good funny games/mods out there?
    @nekusoul@lemmy.nekusoul.de avatar

    When it comes to “classic” comedy, then Hi-Fi Rush is one of the highlights in recent times. Not only are there a lot of jokes in the dialogue that landed for me, all the cutscenes are also loaded with perfectly timed visual gags. Lots of humour hidden in the environment as well.

    Other than that, any “serious” game that has a wonky physics engine can accidentally be pretty funny on accident. Slinging around corpses in Dark Souls 1 for example.

    over_clox, w What are some good funny games/mods out there?

    Going back to legacy PC games from the 90s…

    For adults that don’t mind blood, guts and cursing: Redneck Rampage

    Something much more innocent for kids though: Mystic Towers

    EliteCow, w New Nintendo patent suggests Switch 2 may solve joycon drift
    @EliteCow@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Well I would hope so…

    morphballganon, (edited ) w New Nintendo patent suggests Switch 2 may solve joycon drift

    It would be 100% possible for game devs to include an option to mitigate drift (require the stick to be pushed at least ~x% to move at all, adjustable anywhere from 10 for slight drift to 50 for extreme cases). Haven’t seen the slightest effort nor heard a peep on that.

    Bunch of people in the replies seemingly never tried to play puzzle games with drift and have no idea how much trouble it can cause. Do the puzzles in The Last Campfire with joycon drift and let me know how it goes.

    PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

    That’s not a valid option. 50% is terrible for joystick dead zone and is considered poor quality.

    fartsparkles,

    As a Steam Deck user, even the thought of a 50% dead zone makes me nauseous.

    morphballganon,

    It wouldn’t be the default, obviously… did you read the first part of my post?

    priapus,

    It makes way more sense for that to be an OS level option, not per game. It also makes even more sense to have hall effect joysticks and avoid the problem entirely.

    bulgogi,

    You might as well be using a d-pad at that point

    circuitfarmer,
    @circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

    Or use Hall Effect sticks and have no deadzone at all

    ChairmanMeow,
    @ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

    Wouldn’t solve it, drift can affect regular joystick operation as well, where pushing it all the way to the side could show up as it being stuck in the middle.
